In this part two of the article we'll explore more about this phenomenon that occurs three weeks at a time three times a year. At the end of this article I have included a table so you can find out which house(s) this November-December 2005 Mercury retrograde period falls in relative to your Sun or rising sign. Consult this article to find out how this transit will affect you personally as a result of Mercury retrograding through the houses in your chart. Like all Mercury retrograde periods, these three weeks offer a chance to reorganize in the areas of our life ruled by Mercury. These are the houses of your chart ruled by Gemini or Virgo, any planets in these signs in your chart, and the house occupied by your natal, progressed, or solar return Mercury.

All retrogrades show us that sometimes it is more important to be inwardly oriented than outer-directed. Mercury, the "Guide of Souls," challenges us to cultivate our "fellowship with the Eternal," explore our deeper issues and useful but overlooked details in what's being discussed or asserted, take an unusual view, and allow ourselves to be led by the future implications of what's happening.
In Part 1 of this series of articles, we explored some specific qualities of the present Mercury retrograde period. Hopefully, you will have your important paperwork in order by Friday, November 11th, and will be ready during the three week retrograde period to deal with things you've put off, or take care of things from the past. This November-December Mercury retrograde is going to give us new understanding about the events of the past four months.
We can again reconsider, reinterpret, and rework Sagittarius and Scorpio things, seeing their significance from new angles of understanding where they fit in our lives. We'll get more insights about possible futures, ways of looking at desire and magnetism, abstract understanding and higher realizations, and by the end of this retrograde period, we will stand on the threshold of four months of seeing how our mind works with us or against us, depending on our ability to know the structural strengths and weaknesses in things, situations, and ourselves. We'll begin a period where we have to apply our discrimination in ways that are precise and focused, and the entire four months accents investigation and analysis.
It's a time of examining how the collective imagery affects individuals, as well as primal images in collective and individual subconsciousness. Get your higher vision focused these next four months, and decondition your mind from linear interpretations, instead cultivating your "physical enlightenment." Trust the wisdom of your body, and by early December you can begin to recreate your "world of manifestation" through new symbols and a higher and deeper form of intelligence that isn't completely mentally based. Much will be shown the next three weeks that will lead us to different visions of truth and abstract understanding.
The trine with Saturn occurring during this Mercury retrograde should help stabilize our lives, our boundaries, and our duties, and the ongoing sextile with Venus in Capricorn at the end of the retrograde period shows that late November through mid-December should be very productive for reorganizing resources, relationships, and social interactions. The only significant affliction to Mercury comes from its square to Uranus, showing the potential for eccentric or weird ideas to come out, but also flashes of genius. There will be cross currents between the Sagittarius and Pisces areas of our charts, challenging us to be good jugglers of ideas, and discerning about what fits where. Nervous energy is high and erratic, and we're challenged to find practical ways of expressing our genius or originality and not get lost being too theoretical.
The first two weeks of the retrograde will have the Full Moon quality of the 24 degree Taurus-Scorpio Moon-Sun combo, putting the focus back on Mars' stationary retrograde degree, the "Mounted Indian with scalps." This will bring the entire Mars retrograde period with its lessons of defending one's mission and seeing the broader context of one's mission in life into a realization and fulfillment mode. Survival issues have become important for many as because of the Mars transit, and through returning to primal values inhibitions are being conquered.
Basically put, the frustrating time of Mars retrograde will be brought to culmination over the first two weeks of the Mercury retrograde period thanks to the Full Moon. The light and power will be evident in the ways we can "ground a message," and incorporate the power of well formulated ideas to become actual facts of life. There will be challenges to be met, so find forms of practical inspiration and learn to be a good warrior-guardian.
All in all, this should be a fairly stabilizing Mercury retrograde period, with flashes of brilliance or unexpected revolutions within lessons that will show us how to limit things appropriately. Learn to put the down times to good use, try to cultivate faith in your innate wisdom rather than nervously flit from idea to idea, and decrease nervous tension however you can. There will be opportunities to make leaps of faith that will show you how to transcend dualities, and for quite a few, extraordinary good fortune as a result of integrating themselves into a different community, whether of people, ideas, or actors. Biggest problems come from the Sun square Uranus toward the end of November coupled with the ongoing Mars transit square Saturn and opposed Jupiter forming three legs of the T-squares and Grand Fixed Cross we're dealing with for weeks to come. More on the spiritual effects of these aspects and others at this link.
Mercury is heavily influenced by Jupiter and Mars this retrograde period, since it occupies the signs that those planets rule. This will show at the front end of the retrograde as an intense desire for a more absorbing union with people and ideas, while the back end of the retrograde will challenge us to be able to create happiness despite outer conditions that may not be conducive for that. Release and let go of all that keeps you from being the benefactor to others you could be, and maintain your purity of heart even when discouraged by cold or barren people or situations. This is a great time to individualize your abstract mind, and by letting your mind be led to your heart, you will find a new faith in yourself and others.
The entire three week period is one of seeing how you can be receptive to higher ideas that have nothing to do with linear thinking or reasoning. The beginning is on the individual-mental spiritual level, retreating to the emotional, social, cultural level November 17-22, followed by the actional level between November 22-25. Then Mercury retrogrades back into the Scorpio area of Faith and Appreciation, first on the individual-mental-spiritual level between November 26-December 1, then goes stationary direct on the emotional-social-cultural level of these on December 3.
As with all Mercury retrograde periods, review, reflect, research, gather information, and take a new look at your power to change your point of view and interpretations. This gives a chance to shift how you do what you do, how you coordinate your affairs, and indicates future shifts in the areas where Sagittarius and Scorpio fall in your birth charts. The last Mercury retrograde period in August showed us ways to let our Soul speak, and let go of superficial ways of relating to power and self-expression.
To find more about Mercury retrograde, you should find a copy of my definitive book on the subject, "A New Look At Mercury Retrograde." Written a few years ago, it has timely and useful information. Though it has been out of stock from time to time, I am planning to offer it as an ebook at a very reduced rate from the paperback, so contact me at laughingcat51@hotmail.com and you'll be sent one as soon as I get the files set up! (I know I've been promising this for some time, but I recently did discover where the files were stashed, so it's not that far off.)
By learning about these recurring Mercury retrograde periods, we can understand how to deal with them productively, as well as the months afterwards, which they also indirectly influence. Dear Robert
Can you tell us if you know of a program for astrology which can be used with the Linux Operating System. We would ideally prefer one which supports Medieval techniques.
Thank you once again Robert.
