When Saturn touches a planet or significant point in the chart, we say that Saturn is conjunct that point. Often when a planet or our Ascendant is conjuncted by Saturn, it leads to feeling depressed, oppressed, or repressed. However, by seeing what is obsolete and methodically and maturely eliminating old structures of doing or experiencing, we can find our way to our true selves, freed from prejudices and traps of fear or limiting behaviors that stifle our Spirit. A Saturn transit is a time when we get clear about who we are and who we aren't.
Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto transits all symbolize forces "beyond our control" affecting us, and we respond to these transpersonal forces the best we are able. With Saturn, though, we learn what we can do and what we can't, what we can influence and what we can't, and are given opportunities to grow beyond unresaonable or immature expectations and "shoulds." The three outermost planets make things seem very weird indeed, while Saturn make things crystal clear, if through difficulty and limitations.
Saturn deepens whatever it touches. When it touches our Sun, our light is confined, but structured in a way that is more mature and responsbile. When Saturn conjuncts our Moon, our personal feelings deepen, we become much more introspective, and we restructure our habits and ways of experiencing our day to day life. When Saturn joins our Mercury, our thinking becomes more structured, profound, or dogmatic. We learn what we know and what we do not know, and it's a great time for studying, reading, writing, or any of the mental disciplines. When it conjuncts our Venus, our relationships change dramatically, and we drop obsolete associations, those that are more trouble than they're worth or no longer reflect who we really are. Any time Saturn touches our Moon or Venus there are usually hard lessons in human relations, but that frees us to take care of our likes and needs appropriately.
When Saturn conjuncts our Mars, our energies are somewhat restricted, and we have to examine whatever aggravates us, and take steps to structure in ways to plan the release of the pressure before it explodes or implodes. Saturn conjunct the Jupiter restructures the imagination, the promise of the future, the philosophy, and all the other areas ruled by Jupiter. Some things are cut back, while other things are perseveringly carried out. Saturn conjunct Saturn is the dreaded Saturn return, discussed at length in this article. It's not such a bad time if you're ready to take responsibility for what is your stuff, and drop the learned limitations that keep your life from being the grand adventure that it is.
The time of day determines our rising sign, or Ascendant. When Saturn forms a conjunction with the Ascendant, there is a real sense that we've grown up, and usually have to deal with heavy responsibilities or duties that show us how mature we are. There often are feelings of being weary with the world. It's a serious time, where our purpose is examined with an eye to the future to a degree we usually avoid. We tend to be more serious when Saturn conjuncts our Ascendant, and are capable of doing "the long march," accepting duties we may not feel like doing.
Things seem more weighty during a Saturn transit, not surprising since Saturn symbolizes density. When Saturn conjuncts the Ascendant a part of your self-image is leaving forever, to be replaced with a new way of being in relationships. The Ascendant specializes your unique purpose and being, distinguishing you from everyone else born on your birthday. Nothing clarifies things better than Saturn.
We often accept new responsibilities and long range tasks, training or retraining who we see ourselves to be, and may seem to be older than we were not very long ago. We definitely feel our age under a Saturn transit, and eliminate everything that's a drag on our line and more trouble than they're worth. Saturn usually conjuncts our Ascendant more than once in a life, usually twice (three times if we live to our '80s) and each time we end old lessons and our sense of purpose while resetting our defaults in our self-definition of power, authority, influence and our instinctive self.
Saturn has been conjunct the Ascendant of everyone with Leo rising since mid-July 2005, so all who have Leo ascendant are experiencing this transit. Through the first half of 2006 it will primarily affect those who have the first half of Leo rising. The second half of 2006 into 2007 will primarily affect those with Ascendants in the last half of Leo.
It is hitting the Ascendant of many I know, myself included, and though it is a serious time of great responsibility and increased work, it's helping me restructure what I need to. The last time Saturn transitted my rising sign was mid 1976-mid 1978, when I became a dad and learned a whole new way of being! It was a great time of maturing appropriately, and the fact that the child had Sun in Leo made perfect sense, since they represented the responsibility of Saturn. So, for many it is not necessarily an unpleasant time, though it is heavy with responsiblity.
Saturn's transit started a new self-image cycle for Libra Ascendant people during Sep 1980-Nov 1982 and May-Aug 1983, Scorpio Ascendant people during Dec 1982-Apr 1983 and Aug 1983-Nov 1985, Sagittarius Ascendant people during Nov 1985-Feb 1988 and Jun-Nov 1988, Capricorn Ascendant people during Mar-Jun 1988 and Nov 1988-Feb 1991, Aquarius Ascendant people during Feb 1991-Jan 1994, Pisces Ascendant people during Feb 1994-Apr 1996, Aries Ascendant people during Apr 1996-Jun 1998 and Oct 1998-Feb 1999, Taurus Ascendant people during Jun-Oct 1998 and Feb 1999-Apr 2001, Gemini Ascendant people during Apr 2001-Jun 2003, and Cancer Ascendant people between Jun 2003-Jul 2005.
All of you with these rising signs have been through significant changes in your self-image since Saturn transited your Ascendant. It is now affecting Leo rising people from Jul 2005-Aug 2007 and those with a Virgo Ascendant from Aug 2007-Oct 2009 and Apr-Jul 2010, so plan accordingly.
As Saturn occupies our different houses, those parts of our life are restructured into our larger organic wholeness, and we are able to mature in our approach to a longer, more important life evolution. The Waxing square, or emergent (lower) square happens about 7 years after the conjunction, offering us new grounding and an opportunity to correct what we need to of our self-image that began at the conjunction. It challenges us to revise our memories of the past, and take responsibility for what our foundations are, or need to become. This is a very important time, since "as the roots, so the flowers."
Saturn's lower square to the planets represent a shift in how those energies are to be used responsibly, and marks a reality check on how your are living your new form of experience that started when Saturn conjuncted that planet. Saturn waxing square any planet is a chance for you to change that planetary response to something more appropriate to your evolved self.
Saturn's opposition to our Ascendant happens about 14-15 years after the conjunction, and indicates a time when the world responds to that self-definition. At that point, things are surfacing that will affect our lives for years to come, requiring that we leave other things behind and become a true equal in our relationship to our world and the other people in our life. We've prepared for a greater effectiveness, and this point ushers in approximately 14 years of fulfilling the promise of what began at the conjunction.
When Saturn opposes a planet, it also indicates a surfacing of something that planet symbolizes, but also can bring oppositions into your life teaching you how to make progress despite feeling like there's a huge drag on the line of whatever that planet represents. When confronted by oppositions from Saturn, examine if it's your duty, limitation, fear or responsibility, or if these are coming from another. Either way you'll define your purpose more clearly.
The Waning square, or culminative (upper) square happens about 21-22 years after the conjunction, bringing the fulfillment of our labor at redefining our purpose on our own terms relative to the world we're in. Sometimes it brings widespread recognition and power, or greater influence, these coming if they were our intention and purpose and we did what we had to do to embrace that responsibility. It is a time to be a wise administrator, preparing to turn inward after the harvest time that follows this culmination.
Saturn upper square a planet shows that the process of growth started about 22 years before has now reached an apex, and the challenge here is to know how to turn with the changing emphasis, moving away from exhibiting those old planetary traits and moving into new ones more appropriate to your advanced evolution after over 2 decades of growth and taking responsibility for that planetary function within you.
To sum up, Saturn transits help us deepen, mature, and reshape what we need to in order to become a better citizen of our world. Saturn transits help us redefine ourselves, our purpose, our duties, and our fears. After Saturn touches a part of our being, we are to some degree more serious or clear-minded, whether pessimistically or optimistically. As I said before, Saturn teaches us what we can live with or cannot, regarding what the planets symbolize in our lives, whether people, purpose, or process.
In esoteric philosophy, Saturn symbolizes chains and bondage, but also liberation from everything we no longer want nor need. "Dominion and Slavery" are the duality of Saturn's function. Either we choose to live with the traps of perceptual half-truths based in desire, fear, and duality, or we choose to accept our ability to exercise dominion over our lower self, living on the basis of our Higher Self, which is the seat of our authority over the world of form limited only by our dharma, or "true function," also symbolized by Saturn.
To quote the great Arhat Paul Foster Case,
Right interpretation of the necessity for limitation in any form of manifested existence is the secret of dominion. Wrong interpretation of the same thing is the cause of our slavery to conditions. The clue to the right understanding is the aphorism, 'He who would rule Nature must first obey her laws.'
Saturn shows us how and when we must take responsibility for being an Eternal Spirit occupying a body with feelings and ideas. Saturn teaches humanity how to be patient, persevering, mature, and achieve a well-rounded perspective that is fair, balanced, and reasoned out, the better to demonstrate skill and authority despite the boundaries and limitations of any thing or situation. Saturn is the "Ring-Pass-Not" whose lessons we must learn in order to grow beyond fear.

Any thoughts on the Vedic Sade Sati cycle, which begins when Saturn transits the 12th house from the natal moon? It is supposedly an unfortunate time but I think it is more so for those who haven't been facing some responsibilities. I'm am going through mine right now and I think it could be worse if I had made different decisions in the past.

Well, the 12th sector represents the harvest, the closure, the end game, and the larger karmic compost heap of any given cycle. While it contains many ghosts of the past, it also is where we get to see a larger, more compassionate view of the whole cycle, rather than get caught in a part. As Saturn helps you over the next two years get closure on old lunar functions, you will wise up and know what works in your need systems and what does not. You have an excellent opportunity to turn away from old habits that only create sorrow (or will if you continue them) and find ways to take care of yourself more appropriately. Just examine what motivates your needs and wants and insecurities, and change what needs changing.

Thank you so much. This was most helpful to me having my 2nd saturn return in my 12th.

Hi Anita - You're quite welcome. The 12th house is one of the most misunderstood sectors. It can provide a great harvest if you've developed your "dominion" rather than play to that which enslaves. I often use the metaphor that it's the sector of the "movie of your life," and with Saturn in the 12th, it's important to "relight" and "reshoot" the angle of vision so you can see what was formerly difficult in the light of a greater wholeness of being. And of course, it prepares you for a whole new cycle of self-definition when Saturn crosses over your Ascendant. I hope you have also read my article on the Saturn return, linked above, as it may be of some use to you at present.
An aside - Saturn has been in my 12th since mid-2004, touched my Asc last Nov, then retrograded back into my 12th where it will remain until early July. This time has certainly prepared me for new responsibilities to come, new roles to play, new authorship to come forth in the very near future. I'm seeing which old limitations and self-undoing behaviors I can no longer afford to indulge (and resting a lot more than I used to! ;-))
Whatever my self-image was back in 1976, the last time Saturn went over my Asc, is done for good. Time to move on. Welcome to the third third of your life, when wisdom will come forth, as well as your ability to use it much more constructively than ever before in your life. Thanks for dropping in and commenting.

Robert,
Any thoughts on saturn conjunct natal pluto in the 5th?
I've heard a variety of comments from hardship, loss, finanicial and otherwise.
I 've wondered if the energies will be expressed differently because this will occur in the 5th house.
Thank you.
Posted by: victoria | July 14, 2006 at 10:38 PM
Hi Victoria - Saturn crystalizes whatever it touches, showing us our fear or our dominion. It brings new structures appropriate to our maturity and experience. Saturn in the 5th usually indicates a need to learn to "play at your work and work at your play," and achieve a greater self-confidence in your self-expression. Conjunct Pluto, Saturn shows you the way to power at the deepest levels of your being, and yields the sprouting of long-term seeds of heart power, or responsibilites around cleaning up your Pluto function.
Saturn is only a hardship for those who do not want to take responsibility, or become more mature. While it does often lead to duties that are burdensome, it also shows a rigor we must accept to become more spiritually "goal fit." While Saturn experiences can be sorrowful, it also shows us the way to spiritual maturity. This life is not about comfort and ease - it's about getting in shape to live our dharma, and be our greatest expression of wisdom, love, and intelligence we can achieve in this life.

hello.
in 1991 the saturn touched my ascendant-I am an aquarius rising.
and my life changed. i changed my place of residence, my ex husband was put behind-left the relationship totally in 1993 end.
and began a new chapetr in life.
now I am probably in leo transit of saturn. i am thinking of changing the place of residence once more.
hopefully for better.

Hi asha kamath - With Aquarius rising, you've certainly had some exciting past few years, between Uranus and Neptune moving through that sign. Saturn in your 7th will reorganize your relationships, and begin to bring you the results of how you've defined yourself since it conjuncted your Ascendant. So what began in the early 90s turned a corner in 1999-2000, and is now coming into more public view. You're moving into higher recognition and/or greater responsibility for the next 10-12 years. Venus is the ruler of your home base, or residence, so also consult aspects to that planet in your chart, as well as of course to your Moon.

Hi Robert. My case is sort of interesting (I have scorpio rising) because I have saturn square my ascendant at the moment (9th house) but I also have uranus trine my ascendant now as well (4th house). I have read in astrology that the planets saturn and uranus are pretty much opposites. Can you give me some insight as to the possible manifestations of having the planet of limits teaching you hard lessons but the planet of freedom giving you benefits at the same time? I also have saturn coming up on an opposition to my sun in a few months as well. What would be the best ways to take advantage of this period?
Posted by: scorpio rising | July 31, 2006 at 10:59 AM
Hi Scorpio rising - Uranus is building understanding and harmony in revolutionizing your life foundations, while Saturn is putting the brakes on your old self image and offering you preparation for when it enters your 10th. You're getting a new philosophical view, a new set of possible futures, and you should see some important new duties and responsibilites surfacing when Saturn finally opposes your Sun. Examine your limitations and drop those you no longer need, and get clear about what role you would like to play on the world stage, since you could find yourself living it sooner than you think. I assume Neptune is showing you your higher ideal of self expression and creativity, and so strive to train in readiness for when Mars goes over your Ascendant, activating the promise Jupiter has given you of a new 12 year adventure.
Posted by: Robert | July 31, 2006 at 03:42 PM
I am an Aries with Capricorn rising. My Pluto is 9 degrees Leo, Mars 22 degrees Cancer, Saturn 18 degrees Cancer all in the seventh house. Since 2003 I have lost my job, my home, my relationships, my father and good health. I'm worried. Can you see a light at the end of this tunnel?
Posted by: Monadu | August 02, 2006 at 11:41 AM
Hi monadu - Wow! Sorry you've had so much loss in your life the past few years. Astrologically, Pluto has quincunxed your Saturn and Mars during that time, while Uranus quincunxed your Pluto. 2003-2005 was Saturn in Cancer, so you had your Saturn return, and it conjuncted your Mars, squared your Jupiter and your Venus after squaring your Sun. That's a huge load of heavy lessons.
It is said that though Saturn often accompanies loss, it never takes away what is still needed in one's life. Saturn is now trine your Sun, which should be bringing some stability, and will be favorable to your Jupiter and Uranus for some months, offering productivity. October should bring some fine opportunities, while Nov clears things out, brings returns and understanding, and jumpstarts about a year plus of completion, closure, rewards, and expansion.

Hi WHR - Definitely a turning point. Get clear about what role you're playing, and allow your uniqueness and genius reshape and restructure itself. I have N Node in the Solar 12th, and it seems to me that everything turns out okay in the long run, even though I may have to say goodbye to many things. Meditation, retreat, contemplation, understanding the movie of your life from an archetypal angle is your line of evolutionary development.
This Saturn-Neptune can release the potential of your Full Moon, so embrace larger responsibilities and stop trying to control what cannot or should not be controlled. Rouse yourself, and stabilize that which is your higher destiny. This November should be amazing for you. Welcome to a new major series of cycles of activity in your life beginning October. Examine motives, and embrace the higher ideal.

Hello
What an interesting site. I've been searching for some advice and feel you may be able to help. I have pluto sq my sun in the 7th house [ born march 17th 1954] Everything seems to be coming at once I'm finding it so very tough . Have been made redundant ..yet again and have been a lone parent to my 2 kids for 7 years now [ age 12 and 10] .I'm usually a very postive thinker ...but I'm so tired. How can I handle this malestrom ?
Thank you
Posted by: mandy | August 04, 2006 at 05:39 PM
Hi mandy - It helps to remember that you are an eternal being having a human experience leading you to learn your power to be more and more loving and wise in the midst of the eternal worldly mess. We are here to break the link between pain and suffering, and we don't do this in comfortable circumstances.
You're a very strong person, born to roam free; Mercury will bring you clear understanding this coming October, and November should help you see clearly a wider future if you focus and exclude all that is blocking or obstructing you. Prepare, learn, restructure, and don't get blocked by oppositional people or situations, as per the post on Spiritual Astrology and what Pisces are going through.

Unrelenting, turmoil plaques my existencne. I have been in a emotionally/physical draining relationship for the past 3 1/2 yrs with a manic LIBRA.
I have a Taurus raising, w/Sun, Uranus, Mercury and Saturn in Gemini. Moon in Capricorn. My partner has a Cancer raising
w/Sun, Mercury & Venus in Libra. Moon in Scorpio and Saturn in Capricorn.
There are holes in my spirit I feel I may never replace. How/when can I extritcate mayself safely from this relationship and still insure my financial security.

Posted by: Theresa | August 05, 2006 at 04:14 PM
Hi Theresa - As a general policy, I never counsel someone to marry or divorce, get together or break up. That is entirely in the realm of individual choice. Sorry you have had so much turmoil. Mars rules your house of partnership, while Mercury rules your house of love affairs.
Your Gemini planets are no doubt besieged by Uranus and Pluto, and now by Mars, so it's probably time for you to decide how you want to apply your energies, what you are and are not going to stay bogged down in, and how you can make all your human relations more practical and functional. Your Moon on his Saturn is an important contact, and his Libra afflicting his Saturn shows important lessons he must learn this lifetime about his past.
Taurus rising is having to shift foundations by focusing on your current needs, and break free from situations echoing the past that just keep you frustrated. Scorpio on your 7th brings his Moon to the fore, which must learn to be as for things as it can be against them, and with Saturn near his 7th angle, he is learning how to be neither above nor below others, but a true equal, with all the give-and-take and self-sufficiency that requires.
We can always heal the holes in our psyche if we honestly work at it. As for the financials, I have found that all the money in the world isn't worth the hassle of dealing with another if the money is actually an issue. I'd rather be self-sufficient financially than depend on anyone else, but that's my value system.

Hi Robert
I am currently undergoing my Saturn Return which is going v well as i think i'm battling my lessons! My partner has Leo Rising and seems to be undergoing the same creativity lessons as me - how can that be?! He is a multiple conjunct Pisces born 7th March 1970 4.30pm (Sun, Moon, Merc,Venus, North Node, in Pisces) . He is a clown and a comedian and wondering which way to go now. I thought since it was his Jupiter return (age 36) he'd be luckier than me but he seems to be hitting a few dead ends. Not that he's stressed, he's a beautiful philosophical Pisces, i'm just wondering what Leo conjunct the ascendant means in more detail, or if there's any advice he could follow? Also is there a particular lesson or weirdness in having one sign so dominant in your chart? I'm a also a Pisces but not as much as him!!
thx
Posted by: Louisa | August 06, 2006 at 05:36 AM
Hi Louisa - I hope you've gone to this article on the Saturn Return which may help you understand what you can do to achieve productive focus during this important time. You now know what you can and cannot live with, and can drop a lot of problematic stuff fairly easily that was family and culture-based but is no longer necessarily true for you at this point in your life.
I also am a Leo rising, and have had to go through a rigorous training and work schedule for a year. I have reorganized my time and energy, and have had to accept certain responsibilities. Besides Saturn on his Asc., your partner is dealing with the revolutionary energies of Uranus, and is being forced to adapt whether he wants to or not. Now that Jupiter is direct, he should at least be understanding a broader future based in expanding his base of being.
With Saturn, we learn we MUST patiently accept certain limitations, duties, and responsibilities. With Uranus, we MUST surrender to that which is in radical revolution. If there are defeats and frustrations, it's usually a sign that there are ego blockages that are resisting the Higher Law revealing itself. Dead-ends are showing us one of two things: Either a thing is not true for us, or assuming it might be true for us, we need to redouble our efforts and use our creative imagination to achieve our intention.

Hello Robert,
http://www.astro.com/cgi/showgif.cgi?lang=e&gif=achart_lskfileN4N6Zw-u1156126633.8238.30647.gif&res=63&va=
Saturn is transitting all of my 9th house planets ~ moon, Pluto, Sun and Saturn (for the second time). When planets are close together like these are, it makes for a long period of transitioning and restructuring. With natal Saturn at 8 degrees Virgo and my Midheaven at 11 degrees Virgo, what might that indicate as a focus for this saturn return ~ Dec 2007 at age 58. That's when Saturn will conjunct Saturn, and several more times after that.
Thank you for considering my question?
Posted by: WL | August 23, 2006 at 02:47 AM
Hi WL - I also have a 9th house stellium, and it's certainly an opening up experience whenever anything transits them. Look back at the turning points arising from your first Saturn return; 36, 43, 50. For you, 57 is key, since it's the Saturn year of the Synthesis third of your life. Saturn in your 8/9 sector has challenged you to finish regenerating, letting go of everything not relevant to your future well being, and make the legacy you want to leave to your world more real.
Furthermore, get more education in something higher, broader, or needed for the future. Rearrange your sense of truth, philosophy, or morality to make it clearer what your truth of discipleship is. Certainly your old light, habits, feelings, and duties will be ended over the coming two years, while newer ones, more appropriate to what your wisdom-form is, will begin to become urgent necessities.
Remember when your first Saturn return brought you the sense that certain things were done, and you had to get on with living the unlived potential? Welcome to the second time around, but this time you have the wisdom and experience to know what you should and should not be living with, and can make your life more the expression of the living higher truth you have become these past 30 years. Check back in from time to time and let me know how it's going.

Great Article.....I am a multimedia artist. I have always been told of being ahead of my time and used that as much of an excuse for not "making it." I am currently working on a project that I KNOW I'm at the right time, however having one hellish load of technical and communication obstacles with people and machines. I have one eye that i was born without center vision and my good eye is burning out from the computer. However for someone born without depth perception, I certainly know my way into caves, archaeological spots, photos, and generally obsessive with research. Not to mention can't get a secure relationship, probably cause I analyze everything to death.
Aries rising 18...Leo sun 0..Mercury 15 Leo ...moon Scorpio 23...Venus cancer 0....Mars Libra 19...Neptune Libra 14..Saturn Virgo 16.
Saturn conjuncted my Pluto 17:17 exact on 8/31 opposing Neptune....Had a date and he stood me up..July 23 1950 11:27pm Chicago cook County, Illinois....got any clues Other than I noticed that I finally have a grip on what I will and will not tolerate. chikarella
Posted by: Chikarella | September 02, 2006 at 08:51 PM
Hi Chikarella - Stop worrying about those who don't show up, since it clears the way for those who will. Your majesty will hopefully stop probing into issues that don't concern you (because they are irrelevant to your finer instincts and aspirations!) and be the Mars-Neptune inspiration you could be, rather than discontented and restless. You know how to finesse your way into the core of things, so crystalize your Plutonic power with the Saturn conjunct, and await the tide coming when everything septiles and sextiles your Leo in mid-September through October, leading into the powerful Jupiter conjunct Moon in November.
You're an alchemist and a survivor of the first order -- stop referencing lesser standards. Wait till December before you judge anything about your process, as many things will cut loose in November, and you can ride the wave through December into the new year.

Hi c - Yes, anyone with a Sun-Pluto conjunction knows Pluto's power first hand, as they are the representatives of Pluto's light. Usually, it's the people who fall out of favor with Pluto who need the prayers! You are the natural purifying catalyst for anyone who meets you.

Robert,
Speaking of Saturn transits, what chart do you use for the United States? Gemini rising? Sag rising? I was wondering about Saturn's transit to the natal US Moon in Aquarius.
Thanks!
Pepper
Posted by: Pepper | September 07, 2006 at 10:51 AM
Hi again Pepper - I used to use the 6 July 1775 declaration of war chart, but though significant, it's not really indicative of the birth of a nation. July 2, 1776, seems to be a major date, since the resolutions went out then, but that's also not the birth of a nation, nor is the July 4 Sagittarius rising chart, probably the most accurate for that date, given the historical record. That announced the divorce, not the form of national governance.
There are very strong statistical arguments in terms of significant events in our history for the Ratification of the Articles of Confederation on 1 Mar, 1781, 3:19pm LMT, as well as the Constitution charts, which are 3: a) The final draft sent to Congress on 17 Sept 1787 11:29 am; b) the ratification chart for 21 June 1788, and c) when it went into effect on 4 March 1789.
Now you know why I don't as a rule do predictions based on the "US chart." After 30 years, I'm still studying and comparing!

Hi there,
I have saturn coming to a conjunction with Uranus (19 leo) in my 9th house, I also have pluto conjuncting my jupiter at (24 sag)1st house currently. Please advise.
Posted by: pamela | September 10, 2006 at 06:41 PM
Hi pamela = Your uniqueness is getting a new structure over the next few months, and you need to broaden your study, or read as much as you can about higher things that lead to unified consciousness. Pluto is purifying your Jupiter and whatever houses it rules. Jupiter trine Uranus natally, with Saturn trining your Jupiter for some months to come, will solidify your self-expansion in some very good ways. The transiting Saturn trine Pluto will activate your Jupiter trine Uranus. Aries is the harmonious void. Do pioneering things, break new ground, turn quickly from old ways and embrace a powerful new self-initiative.

What does it mean if Saturn squares my Ascendant and conjuncts my Midheaven? Thanks.
Posted by: Joy | December 22, 2006 at 08:10 PM
Hi Joy - It means Saturn is near the top of your chart wheel. It could be in the 9th or 10th house, depending on whether your Ascendant and Midheaven are more or less than 90 degrees apart. I don't know whether you're referring to the natal chart or transits, which have different interpretations.
If natal, it shows you are going to lead somewhat of a high profile life, filled with responsibility, and that your instincts will often run counter to the powers that be in your life. If transiting, it shows you've been learning a lot about broadening your truth, philosophy, morality, and higher vision, have culminated a 22 year quest for self expression, and preparing to accept more power and responsibility in your world in the near future.

Hi Robert,
I honestly don't know, but thank you for the insight. I'm interested in astrology, but obviously, I still have much to learn. lol
I had my natal chart reading done on-line and it indicates that my rising sign is Sagittarius. It also shows that I have Saturn in Leo, 27.05R and yes, Saturn is in my 9th house. My natal chart had a table labeled "Aspects" and that's where I saw "Saturn conjunction Midheaven Orb 9.44 Value 3. My apologies but when I checked again, I just overlooked the "Saturn squaring my Ascendant" part.
I'll try to read some more on Astrology so I can keep up with your articles. Your help on recommended sites for beginners would be most welcome. Taking baby steps :-)
Posted by: Joy | December 23, 2006 at 08:50 AM
Hi Joy - So yes, you are speaking of the natal chart, and are having your Saturn Return. The linked article should help you understand more of what's happening in your life. You also have transiting Uranus square your Ascendant if it's between 9-15 Sagittarius, OR you have transiting Pluto conjunct your Ascendant if your Ascendant is between 22-29 Sagittarius. Because Jupiter is approaching a conjunction with your Ascendant, it's the end of an old 12 year cycle and the beginning of a whole new adventure. Mars is currently in Sagittarius, so be careful of impulsive actions, slow down, and see how to move your activity toward your future while reaping the rewards of the past.

Robert,
I'm really enjoying your site. I have a Capricorn sun, and I used to always think I had the "wrong" sign. I was a preemie, and I was supposed to be an Aquarius, like my mother. When people learn my birthday is in January (15th, 1970 2:42a.m.), they always assume I am an Aquarius. As I got more into astrology, I "explained" it to myself by my Scorp/Neptune in Sag ascendant. I never understood why every Capricorn description I read seemed to be about the attainment of money and position, and the desire for designer goods - the opposite of what I have always been. So many Cap/Saturn descriptions are so limited and do not get to the spiritual essence of the archetype. I do long for power - but all those "hard" things that I am seem more in line with my Scorp ascendant, and all the dreaminess and poetic leanings I attributed to Neptune in the 1st and Mars in Pisces. (I also have always wondered what the effect of intercepted planets is: Aquarius is intercepted in my 3rd house, where Cap is on the cusp, so does that mean it's like a secondary sun sign for me?) I've studied astrology (informally) since I was 12, (25 years!) but only in the last decade or so have I come across definitions of Capricorn that make sense to me in terms of my spiritual, poetic leanings: that Cap is the culmination of the material, it symbolizes completion in the material sense as we enter the spirit; completion of spiritual mission in the world; and that "I use" thing that I always thought was so crass: I finally heard it described as "How can I use this to help myself and others?" Oh! I thought, that does sound like me! And now I hear you describe Saturn in terms of
not only chains and bondage, "but also liberation from everything we no longer want nor need" and "Dominion and Slavery." I have heard Saturn/Cap described in terms of duality (2 faces of Janus), but your description was a revelation. I've heard of how Caps have to work harder to break past fears and that's how they attain greatness, not b/c they're better, but b/c they have to work hard to get past all those fears. But how eloquently you have put it: "Either we choose to live with the traps of perceptual half-truths based in desire, fear, and duality, or we choose to accept our ability to exercise dominion over our lower self, living on the basis of our Higher Self, which is the seat of our authority over the world of form limited only by our dharma, or "true function," also symbolized by Saturn." I love that dharma is associated with Saturn! So Cap is, again, *not* all about money/work for the sake of money/work - there is a spiritual component. Right work, to serve a purpose in the world. I love it! Determining and living my true purpose, manifesting abundance, and learning how to fit my eternal spirit into this limited existence are major themes in my life. And now I get it - this is Cap stuff! So I am a Capricorn after all! Thank you. :->
Posted by: ast | April 12, 2007 at 08:44 PM
Hi ast - You're most welcome. I believe Cap is ruled by Uranus in the realm of Spirit, so in some respects your Libra energy is a strength to be reckoned with! Set your sights as high as you can, make success worth its price, find an adequate challenge for your tremendous creativity, and to quote Grand Lewi, "realize that low aim, not failure, is sin." (Sin being an old archery term for "missing the mark.")
You will always focus on things other people are missing, march to a completely different drummer, are not bound to the usual forms of logic, order, and discipline, and if you do feel discouraged, make sure your values and ambitions are not misaligned. Get them supporting each other, and there's no end to what you could accomplish, even with your Mars in Pisces, which mandates that you must follow your own energetic needs, and not be driven by others past your level of self-maintenance, as then you start feeling badly and give yourself a hard time. Pisces is your line of greatest evolutionary development.

Great website. Thanks for the insights. I have Cancer rising, Pluto in Leo in the 1st house. When Saturn transited in Leo, I lost my husband, house, family, job, best friend and 55 pounds. My Saturn return is next year, and I don't know what else I can lose? HELP
Posted by: Deborah | April 14, 2007 at 05:30 PM
Hi Deborah - Saturn never takes away anything relevant to your future, only the fulfilled remains of the past. I am sorry you lost your mate, family, house, and best friend. Grieve what must be grieved, and hold the empty space knowing it will be filled appropriately at the right time. We're all being "liberated from a narrow destiny" due to eclipse effects. My Saturn return is also next year, and it's already clear that my "destiny" as Saturn shows it is not what it has been these past 28 years. That said, you may not have anything else left to lose but your fear. Jupiter is trine your Pluto, so open to distant possibilities or go back to school.

Thank you Robert! I am most impressed by the fact that you engage your readers in conversation, indulging questions and comments alike. You're the first astrologer I've run into who does this. I wanted not to ask too many questions, but what you've mentioned here is boggling my mind. "Cap is ruled by Uranus in the realm of Spirit..." I had no idea. "...your Libra energy is a strength to be reckoned with!" I had no idea I had Libra energy(?). I used to think maybe my rising sign was Libra, until I got my chart done and found it was Scorpio. I thought I only had Libra on the 11th and 12th cusps, and no planets. "find an adequate challenge for your tremendous creativity..." that makes me feel wonderful! "realize that low aim, not failure, is sin." (Sin being an old archery term for "missing the mark.") Awesome quote! I had no idea about the double meaning of sin. That is so cool! I appreciate your words so much. I can't help wondering though, not only about the Libra thing, but about why "Pisces is [my] line of greatest evolutionary development." That's pretty cool though. My grandma used to say, "You shoulda been born in March." :-> I guess b/c I change my mind so much.
Posted by: ast | April 20, 2007 at 01:23 AM
Hi ast - Thanks. North Node is the line of greatest evolutionary development, though sometimes difficult. If the NN is in Pisces, that's where you will learn much that you will demonstrate through the South Node function.

Posted by: sharon | May 27, 2007 at 06:24 AM
Hi sharon - Closure, closure, closure. Learn more self-confidence born of self reliant self-sufficiency, find a concrete form of your uniqueness, and shift with the tide this September which begins a 9 month process of bringing seeds of power to the surface in your life while clearing out whatever you fear. Do NOT take a narrow or pessimistic view of things, but learn whatever you need to learn while budgeting your time, energy, and money, since you'll probably have two of these at any given time, but not all three together. Neptune quincunx the Moon shows it's time to sacrifice old habits and defensiveness, opening to broader possibilities. When Jupiter sextiles Neptune it forms a Yod with your Moon as the nozzle. You'll also experience the other Yod when planets in Virgo sextile your Moon both double quincunx transiting Neptune. Welcome to your God self, once you stop trying to back into it.

Hi Rao - Go for it. Prepare the ground, move slowly at first, and examine hidden things that need to be brought into the light. Allow the influence to work over time. Though Mars will oppose your Sun in October and again in December, Jupiter will bless you beginning December, and Saturn will help stabilize everything you initiate. Pluto will add invisible help via economy of energy and seed patterns, and by March you should be well on your way.

Hi Robert,
If someone has one of the outer planets as a ruler in their chart, and if that person is born with a lot of influence from that planet, (it aspects a lot of other planets and is in an angular house), does that person have an easier time with transits with that planet?
So if someone has a multi-aspected Pluto, has a Scorpio Sun, etc... would that person have a less challenging time dealing with Pluto transits to their Sun, AC, or Moon? Do we integrate these planets based on our chart?
peace,

Hi Patricia - Well, you're asking me if my Pluto rising (spiritual ruler of my Sun, Mars, Mercury and MC in Aries in a Mystic Rectangle and Fixed T-square) is easier during its transits. My answer would be a qualified yes. However, familiarity does not necessarily mean an easy time with whatever transpersonal experience is being dished out. And sometimes I'm the Pluto in a situation, which others get uncomfortable with if they're not ready to purify or plant seeds. It's certainly a relentless situation in any case, but I'm fairly comfortable relating to the "Lord of the Underworld," and have also learned that being a local embodiment of Shiva, Ganesha is my offspring and Parvati my mate! Not a bad gig, even if intense at times!

Great Article Robert!!
I wish I would have come across it in 2002 when tr. Saturn conjunct my Ascendant in Gemini. For several years prior to the transit, I had been studying astrology independently by reading every book and website I could come across. I was only aware of natal concepts then and knew nothing about transits at all. When Saturn starting closing in on my Ascendant, I remember feeling depressed and bewildered as my internal thought patterns began to shift. I was living in a house with peers who were very bad influences, but I was unable to consciously make the changes I needed to since I had never known any other lifestyle before. Venturing out into a new realm at 23 was frightening, so I clung to my destructive lifestyle.
Amazingly, Saturn urged me to do things to incite change, but they transpired unconsciously, which eventually lead to a discordance between me and all my roommates. They finally asked me to leave which was so scary and heart breaking, but it certainly turned out for the better.
Not long after, I met someone who knows a lot about Astrology and she helped me get in touch with so much more information than I was able to allocate on my own. That's when I learned that what was happening was temporary and a necessary life lesson whose outcome was to make me a better person. Nevertheless, the remaining time of the transit was quite difficult due to a self-imposed isolation which forced me to withdraw and turn inward to reevaluate my personality, identity and how I relate to others. I experienced an identity crisis which was so devistating. If I had never found out it was a temporary period of growth, I would have never been able to make the best of it and probably would have furthered my self destruction to the point of no return.
It was the first transit I ever followed along with and examined as to how such a trend was to effect my life for the better. I whole-heartedly agree with everything you said as I consider that time in my life to be a truly definitive moment in my evolution. I released the shackles of my adolesence and started the process toward becoming the man the universe needs me to be.
I have become a much better person since then. I can actually take care of myself and meet all my obligations and responsibilities with ease and pleasure. Without Astrology in my life, I highly doubt I would have pulled through as well as I did.
I just started my Saturn return (mathematically) although I starting preparing for it months ago, so in a way, I feel I've been working at it for longer. Furthermore, my natal chart has Saturn conjunct my Sun and IC, all in very early Virgo. I'm so excited to be going through this, because I know how golden my life will be when I graduate from Saturn Univeristy.
I do have a question I'd love to get some of your insight on. With tr. Saturn conjunct my IC, is this a time for me to focus on establishing my roots and/or recreating a healthy, supportive family base, neither of which I have ever achieved in my life? I do have a biological family, but we are all disconnected and I don't feel aligned with them in anyway. My assumption is that I am to recreate my own base so I can march into true adulthood with my roots firmly planted.
I know this is a long response, but I feel the need to relate to your profound insight and guidance by responding with my own experience as a way to further illustrate the importance of such a transit.
Thank You Very Much!
Namaste.
Posted by: Chris | October 21, 2007 at 09:14 AM
Hi Chris - Thanks for your praise of the article. You have perfectly described the Saturn effect, gradual, relentless, inevitable, maturing. Saturn helps us break free of forms of mental and emotional slavery. It may bring up fear, but what better time to smash the chains of illusions? Quarantine is a good thing when you're with people who have social and other diseases, since solitude can teach us much about the illusion of isolation. You can't really know that you would have been as self-destructive as you imagine, since Spirit works in very mysterious ways to bring us out of ignorance into our "truth of being." I'm very glad you have been helped by the celestial craft, since I believe it can assist us to become our Highest Self. And it is "golden" when we find our way to Dharma.
Yes, Saturn on the IC is a time of setting new roots, new foundations, and new platforms from which to launch our future effectiveness. So yes, to the degree you can establish yourself in "a place of your own," and eliminate ALL negative memories of the past, including your early childhood, you'll make Saturn your friend. With your family of origin, do meditations of radical forgiveness, gratitude, and acceptance that they are Eternal Beings who have had a hard time expressing it, and if nothing else, send prayers of hopefulness and altruistic intention that they will find their way to enlightenment any way that is perfect for them in the exact right time. You can generate an altruistic intention through cultivating an open mind and an open heart any time you want, and the more you practice these the better you'll do in the future.

Hello Robert, I haven't been here for quite some time!
So many has been happening lately. But today, is very very special: I've got Pluto at 5 Virgo 35, so Saturn AND the South Node are both conjunct it and very exactly TODAY! I felt that yes, most definitely there is a sense of a certain confinement due to some circumstances that are going on in my life at present, but something very fated also happened and that will probably change the course of events in my life quite literally in a year or so to come. The moment that Saturn started to approach Pluto, I noticed and felt, with that amazing clarity Saturn gives us, how much I was being abused in some areas of my life, it hit me like a blow not less, really. I have been able to rise up and impose my will like it hasn't happened in a long time. I'm just loving this. The South Node on Pluto has been bringing some endings and strange and fated "new?" beginnings, meeting people who feel and look familiar, as well as other situations that most definitely feel "strangely familiar". So far so good. But I really do love Saturn on my Pluto, last time it happened in 1977/78 I also acquired some renewed power, and who said that it only brings financial losses??? Yes, there can be some situations in which you have to take stock and pay the dues, but I guess this happens as easily with any other planetary transits as well, not just with the combination of Saturn with Pluto. I've been having some gains too, also some concerns related to family's assets, but more on a practical level, as in what is the best to do, what are the best investments options, things like that... thank goodness that Saturn is now in Virgo, that's such a relief...

Hi fidant - The link you provided raises some interesting speculations. I'm always skeptical of kundalini sites and practices since I've seen tremendous damage done by well meaning people trying to awaken "the serpent force." The site seems to take it into a somewhat abstract level, equating a "kundalini experience" with an awakening, which is somewhat imprecise. We have many awakenings, but they may or may not involve the spiral force in ways that are dramatic enough for us to maintain after the awakening. And while I have my own take on physio-spiritual developmental stages, still the link provides much food for thought. As long as we learn on any level, neural development is happening, and any time the organism opens to a more advanced aspiration we can leapfrog the "natural" process and accelerate our spiritual realizations and higher awareness. These types of awakenings at early ages are not confined to obviously advanced beings such as Ramana Maharshi or Sai Baba. There are many disciples and Initiates who awaken early and live their lives of higher service. A true spiritual Initiation into timeless higher awareness is always possible for those who integrate their personalities, find a selfless service and group awareness, and live as aspirants to demonstrate the truth of nonseparateness and the love and knowledge of whatever path to higher Truth they are on.
Hi Alix - Welcome back to the cantina. Saturn on your Pluto for awhile should crystalize your higher power showing itself as a form of economy of energy. You hit the nail on the head with the phrase "that amazing clarity Saturn gives us," since it becomes evident exactly what we can and cannot live with. "Renewed power" is another excellent descriptor of Saturn conjunct Pluto, and yes, each planetary energy has its own unique version of taking stock and paying dues. Glad you can describe the positives of this transit. May they continue!
Posted by: Robert | October 23, 2007 at 07:47 AM
Hi Robert, thank you for your thoughtful and thought-provoking comment.
You are right, the site on the link leans a bit too much on the abstract side and I am moving toward sources more grounded in nature. The path of higher awareness can get rather turbulent when I don't watch for that...

Hi fidant - No knock on that site, but definitely these are times when grounding in useful practices generating momentum toward fulfilling Dharma is favored.

Hi Robert,
No wonder I feel discouraged with my job search today. I follow my intuition and do my best to remain organized and positive but sometimes - hey I'm human, I get just weary.
I realized that today I have exact (10/23/07):
(Chiron is natally in my 3rd house of communication which would have a bearing on my job search during my Mercury retrograde in the 12th house. The 12th house explaining that occasional feeling of vulnerability that creeps in at times. However I keep trying. My ex the astrologer used to say that October is my "quiet time of the year". That may explain why I'm not all that into Halloween.)
It is said that these Chiron transits come along once every 50 years.
Chiron opposite Uranus: 10/23/07, 0.20 deg. orb
enters orb: 8/27/07, 1.65 deg. orb - leaves orb: 11/26/07, 1.00 deg. orb
Chiron trine Jupiter: 10/23/07, 1.32 deg. orb
enters orb: 9/13/07, 2.00 deg. orb - leaves orb: 10/23/07, 1.32 deg. orb
Chiron sextile Saturn: 10/23/07, 1.49 deg. orb
enters orb: 10/13/07, 1.50 deg. orb - leaves orb: 10/23/07, 1.49 deg. orb
Chiron square Venus: 10/23/07, 1.66 deg. orb
enters orb: 9/24/07, 2.00 deg. orb - leaves orb: 10/23/07, 1.66 deg. orb
Transiting Jupiter also enters the 2nd house on 11/17 ... Moving Forwards at Degree 0 in a 34 Degree House. Any thoughts on that?
These transits may also explain why the past couple of days I've had the strong feeling that it's finally time to move on ... I've spent the past two and a half years going through a steady stream of change (move, sale of house, 19 month divorce, mom's passing etc etc, being there for others as well as working on myself, being on my own and taking care of my own life ... and it's time to leave the past behind and open up to the new.
Through out this 12th house mercury retrograde I have also found myself re thinking, re planning, re organizing - quiet time and thinking which has always been my path. My spiritual path/lessons have always been in line with introspection and being comfortable in my own skin and own space, as well as with others.
Natally my planets are all crammed up into the upper left of the chart ... with lots of lessons along the way. What does it usually mean when one has so much crammed into one area of the chart?
I've given myself time to work on myself and to heal so that I don't carry old baggage forward. I've gone through this process (especially since 2005) mindfully and thoughtfully.
It's time for the new. I was even thinking about trying e harmony.com which I've not done before.
I'm a clean slate ... it's taken work and time to get there but the slate is clean and ready for new designs and co creation with all that is.
I think I'm finally ready to consider a new relationship if and when it comes. Otherwise I'm fine on my own. :)

Thanks Robert, yes, absolutely: economy of energy, Saturn has been leading the way in showing me alternatives to cut down expenses which have been amazingly effective!
It is also showing me wise ways of saving money, I've been learning a lot regarding investments (well, my Pluto is a 2nd house one...), Saturn is simply severing all the bad things that have been hurting my Pluto for the past two years.
On my chart, I've got Pluto Bi-Quintile Saturn, it seems that they like each other a lot... :)
Posted by: Alix | October 24, 2007 at 12:47 PM
Hi Lori - You MUST learn to get above the fluxes of everyday life, and see things from a longer evolving wave perspective so you don't get hooked by passing irrelevancies. You may have to open to seeing things differently than you have before if you want something new to present itself. Your discouragement won't attract what you're looking for, and Chiron also may or may not have much to do with what you're looking for. Jupiter is already in the zone of influence between houses, so try to ride that increasing sense of an expanding universe. The quicker you can come to finality around old stuff the quicker you create the spaciousness within that will attract other life contents perfect for who you are now.
Hi Alix - Glad you're learning economy, since one who lives that way usually attracts even more! In the West and those other nations who have fallen into certain delusions, there is a tendency to learn self indulgent and selfish behaviors and attitudes, and forget that most of the world is happy not to be eating dirt and whatever grasses grow by the side of barren roads to nowhere. Pluto in the 2nd shows that once you confront the shadows there, you are capable of becoming extremely wealthy. Glad Saturn is drying up old things that have hurt you, and yes, the biquintile is a very nice aspect of mutual gifting.

Hi Robert
Thanks for being there! I agree, as always, the only way is through surrender to all that is and in relaxing, letting go, being in the Universal flow.
What I was saying is that I'm finally at the clear heart center point of truly moving on - which is a good thing.
Lori
Posted by: Lori | October 26, 2007 at 06:36 AM
Hi Lori - There is a strong sense of finality for many in these times. You've done your heart work while Saturn was in Leo, so it's time to work with "significant forms," as Rudhyar would put it. Learn place and function seeing the relative importance of things each in their own way. Many planets clustered in a quadrant emphasizes that sector, which in your case is public and personal. It's why you don't mind the visibility. Sounds like you really are stronger for your experience of Saturn in Leo. And the more developed you are, the higher a being you'll attract who might be a friend and helpmate.

Hi Robert,
I'm currently having Saturn conjuncting my Virgo Ascendant with Pluto now in my fourth house oppositioning Saturn in my Pluto (1st)-Saturn (10th)-Moon (7th) T square.
I'm wondering if you could comment on these transits. I'm having terrible feelings of repulsion towards my mother, and cant stand ANY type of interaction.. This is all very disturbing as it feels very irrational and uncontrollable. I've broken up with a partner and am finding it difficult to to start anew.

Hi Samantha - Not sure what you're describing in terms of your natal influences. I'm assuming you mean you have Saturn in Gemini in the 10th and Pluto in your first house with Moon in Pisces. As I had Saturn in my first for a number of years, I can truly say it's time to accept responsibility for your maturity and experience, and be more the divine discerner. Sometimes we must separate from our parents, other times separate from our memories of the past. They are not now as they were then, so forgiveness and understanding go a long way to healing whatever is the source of the aversion, in your case, "revulsion." It's probably not a time to "start anew," as much as it's a time for self examination and consciously changing the patterns you need to in order to live in a more fulfilled way in the future. And when you've broken up with someone, it's a great time to hear the sound of your own inner voice again, without externals drowning out your ability to hear your true voice.

Saturn is now in sidereal leo. In your case it was in sidereal cancer. No wonder you became a father to a child.
