What will happen on 06-06-06, aka 6/6/06?

There is some complete silliness going around the world about what may happen on June 6, 2006, also known as 06-06-06 and 06/06/06. In case you've been living the far side of Sirius or the Pleades the past two thousand years, the number 666 is associated with the so-called "Beast Of Revelation," a human scary story created long ago to frighten the witless, the superstitious, and the gullible. While we do live in a time of extraordinary change, destabilization, and it is truly "the end of the world as we know it," if there is a Beast, or Devil for that matter, it's the sum total of humanity's lower thought-forms, desires, and fears. Regarding that specific day, astrology gives us a very benign horoscope featuring a grand Air Trine and three points of a Great Quintile, or 5 pointed Star that portends very good things.

(Update: Due to overwhelming traffic on this article, I'm adding a little to explain some things I left obscure in the earlier post) The number 666, associated with "the Beast," is a mind game played by those with too much time on their hands. 06-06-06 is not the current date in many different calendars (Chinese, Hebrew, Mayan, and others), so please do NOT get wrapped up in fear over this numerical anomaly. We live in extraordinary times, but fear is never appropriate for our task of making our lives the expression of the love, wisdom, and intelligence of our Soul. Regardless of your beliefs, please do not allow numbers to throw you into fear and superstitious loathing or anticipation of evil things to come.

Power-hungry and fearful manipulative people are exploiting this time of change by generating more fear in people who wonder what it all means and what they should do. Remember that no matter what is happening or what is to come, fear is a USELESS emotion. We may have a time of tribulation coming, but only our love, our compassion, and our connectedness with others on this Earth will outlive the superstitious nonsense that pervades our planet like a bizarre emotional virus. Whether Christian, Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu or any other faith, remember that you should not be getting scared about numbers. That's a ridiculous way to live, and unworthy of your high spiritual estate to be claimed as you move toward living your Higher Self. What follows is the remainder of the original article, with the next three paragraphs for metaphysical astrologers, and the last two for all of us.

In fact, we will have 4 points of the Great Quintile at work when 8 Pisces and 20 Taurus are on the Ascendant or Midheaven, both very powerful points. When Pisces is Rising, we'll also have a grand Water Trine and a grand Air Trine simultaneously, which seems to me to be a very harmonious influence. We will have Venus rising in the 12th house opposed Jupiter in Scorpio when early Taurus is rising before dawn, harmonized first by Mercury in a very favorable degree of Cancer, followed by Uranus in an elevated power position.

The Grand Air Trine involves Sun at 16-17 Gemini trine Neptune at 20 Aquarius, a degree of the descending of Spirit offering blessings to each of us. The Moon starts the day in Libra, beginning its trine to the Sun just after midnight and continuing to trine Neptune through the rest of the day. Around sunrise is when it exactly quintiles Mars and Pluto, cutting the biquintile in two and creating a strong unique harmonic configuration showing unique gifts and perspectives. It quintiles Saturn later in the day. There is a very strong Sun biquintile Jupiter that day, with Jupiter on the humanitarian point.

About the only disharmonious aspects the entire day are confined to the Jupiter semisquare Pluto, Venus opposed Jupiter and sesquisquare Pluto, and the just-separating Sun square Uranus and Mercury sesquisquare Neptune from a day earlier, making them still volatile.  So it's not like it's a universally "good" or universally "bad" day. Just another mixture of the good and the bad, the harmonious and disharmonious. Perhaps it is another day to make important choices, just like the days before and after 06/06/06.

I would think it's a day to see how you are dependent on a web of life around you, and show appreciation to that which sustains you and which you sustain as well. Make yourself more attuned to the harmonious and beneficient forces of Spirit, and celebrate your blessings rather than lament what's passing.

Cultivate your strength of Spirit, look at the lasting effects you have created and are creating, and moderate what goes into and out of your mouth. See what you and others need for nourishment, and turn away from mental and emotional habits that do not help you to grow and thrive.

Well, it's pretty strange to me as well. I never have figured out why people who are nominally intelligent and educated fall prey to superstitions around numbers. While numbers have symbolic meaning, our calendar is only one of many, and "the beast of Revelations" is more likely America's corrupt corporate-political culture than anything else.

This is a pretty interesting topic. I, being Christian, beleive that the anti christ will come, and Jesus will save the ones who do beleive in Him, but not now. Think about it, if there is going to be a June 6th 2006 (06/06/06) then there was obviously at June 6th of the 6th year, a June 6th of the 1006th year, a June 6th of the 1906th year, and so on. The difference is this speculation probably didn't occure to this extent in 1906. We live in the world where the press creates and stretches stories, and people are stupid enough to spread and beleive things they hear without researching. Think about it.

As long as we love the Lord, and love each other, we're groovin' on the One. Either we live our compassion and lessen the suffering, or we participate in it.

The numerical ridicule currently may exact man's disjointing tendency-nature from, truth to 'pulp fiction.' I suspect this number arrangement and it's systemic fear-producing result was cultivated by lower men, willingly and unwillingly, intelligibly and unintelligibly. In lesser love with my own ego and words...Fear=easy and Truth=hard ie. Frost's 'The Road less(er) traveled.'? (Is it less or lesser traveled?)
I 'turn the other cheek' against 666 or '867530-nye-e-i-ene' not to condescend anyone personal belief, to relate that a view of one of the original message of Christ is to love and honor each other without fear or superstition. The fear/superstition is my own constant personal work at discriminating out of mind the beliefs that bring me or those around me no good~ like drilling out old dental fillings.

Hi trudi - Please reference the above statements and comments. Yes, there is a nuclear problem. You will recall it was "invented" by the Nazis, and Bush is trying to resurrect the nuclear movement, in energy, battlefield shells, and larger threats. We have a lot of war and environmental change to come.

Yet, with all the upheaval in front of us, the long term future of humanity is very bright. Once the breakdown is complete, those who care about building a better world, those who have learned the skills we're all being taught now, will do very well. Others who are fear and control based will not do so well.

This is for the long haul and our ability to think in the future. Begin to learn what you have to, right now, to prepare to shift with the needs of the times. Do not be a passive victim of circumstances. Do not yield to a paralyzing fear. You are an Eternal consciousness with strengths, skills, and as much of a future as you want.

I think that in light of this day, there are many people who are afraid of what is to come. Plainly, i must say that we must have faith in the things we cannot see and have strength and courage in the times that are to come. People believe that this day will be one of two things, Which could be good or bad, i say it is what we see it to be. If This is the so called day of judgment, then we will face it, but if not we will simply go on questioning some other day that may come. Well spoken, Steve! I do believe we can have faith in the true, the good, and the beautiful. I do believe we need all the strength and courage we can muster to face what's ahead environmentally. War is a manifestation of the heresy of separateness, and will fade from this Earth when we conquer the beasts of fear and blind desire.

I believe that each day is blessed, and each season Sacred, in that all of these allow us to demonstrate the miracle of our love, wisdom, and intelligence. You are right when you say we must not let fear of a day hold us back, and on any given day there could be great tragedies or great accomplishments, as well as miracles, blessings, and enlightenment.

Hi Susan - Yes, all calendar dates have their unique quality, and this is just one more day of many.

Hi Celeste - The Bible is a group of manuscripts manipulated by political priests at the Counsel of Nicea 300 years after Christ. I'm also a man of faith, and neither God, nor Christ, wrote Revelations. I'll take the red letter teachings of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and leave the rest as so much human fallible stuff.

Those who interpret the Bible in terms of fear are the liars, since to repeat myself, we were told two commandments, and only two: Love God, and Love each other. The rest is pure human-created BS. Certainly fearing the so-called "Beast of Revelations" is not what Christ taught, if we are to believe his own words. The disciples taught fear, Paul taught fear, priests and preachers teach fear, but Christ taught us NEVER to fear. Please get over your fear of numbers, and get with the program of love.

Hi Diane - Right on the mark, as usual. If people actually LIVED the teachings of the Master, they'd be in a lot less pain, suffering,and confusion. I suppose we have the "heathen" Constantine to thank for our current mess of a "bible," and I am greatly encouraged that piece by piece we're getting other manuscripts from 2000 years ago that paint a much more coherent picture of the life and times of the Teacher and his followers.

Hi brenti - I agree that the caricature of "satan" does not exist except as a scary story to frighten people into parking their reason (and their faith in eternal goodness) on a shelf and giving the church more money and power. Right now, evil seems to be unleashed by Bush, Rove, Rummy, Abrams, and the other men who think nuclear war is good, greed is good, torture is good, and all the other abominations that afflict suffering humanity.

I always found it useful to see "the devil" as the total accumulated thought-forms of fear, desire, attachment, aversion, and delusion as humans express these. If "God is good," and "God is all that is," then how could anything eternal be other than good? Which means all the evil in the world is human generated, not some being "who lives in hell," though of course the men mentioned above do live in the hell of their own making, and insist on trying to afflict the rest of us with their own nightmare.

While they have succeeded in afflicting the world to some extent, by the time the wreckage is done, humanity will face a very bright future, freed of the chains of the delusions these men and others bring to the world's table. This world will look very differently in a few decades, and there will be a lot less fear.

Hi yada - Based in what you say, I guess we need to prepare for Bush, Cheney, and most of our government to die (and all governments on Earth, for that matter!), since they "have committed sins that have caused deaths." Hi Joe - Well, I wouldn't say NOTHING happened. The Sun rose and set, some people got married, others divorced, some made money, some lost money, some babies were born, and some people died. Like any other day, including June 6 of 1906, 1806, 1706 and so forth. Then there are those who say the world will end on December 12, 2012 (12-12-12) which is when the Mayan calendar ends.

I think human fascination with numbers is fairly universal, but at this time we're experiencing heightened weirdness due to the Grand Irrationality. For those who read this and wonder why things are so bizarre, read the article, follow the internal links to other posts on the Grand Irrationality, and you'll see why there is a higher level of irrational and even obsessive-compulsive behavior from time to time. You can even find out if your generation or birthday is more or less prone to being caught up in the generic weirdness. And even if it does not apply to you, it may apply to someone you know. Hopefully the knowledge will help things make more sense in this very weird time we're all going through.

Anybody with fears over 06.06.06 think of this... it will be the year 2006 yes? would not the year 0006 have been a much more symbolic year? or even 0666 or 6660 not 2006... a 2? what good would a 2 be even if the devil did exist (i am not saying whether he does or doesn't your own interpretation.) all im saying is. 2006 would not be a suitable year for the most powerful evil in the world to arise and destroy humanity. and if he did God is said to be all knowing. would he not know the year anti christ would rise? would he not come down to protect the world he sculpted so? he did not have his son sacrificed for his enemy to destroy it all.

Hi Grant - I agree that other dates would be equally valid symbolically, and as per my statement, there are many calendars that are equally valid that have nothing to do with "666."

As for the "end of the world?" In the near future, humanity will most likely suffer the results of its own ignorance and short-sighted greed and stupidity. Thanks to our oil dependence, global warming is melting the ice all over the planet as we speak, and will inevitably yield a rise in sea levels of up to 20 feet. That will disrupt coastal areas globally, including fisheries. It has already disrupted the Gulf Stream, putting Europe at risk. We have overfished the oceans, which will no longer be able to produce as many fish as they have historically. Our stupid way of farming is destroying our top soil, yielding starvation conditions in many places. And genocidal hatred between races and religions destroys countless people every year.

In my opinion, we need to remember that we need to be loving each other, not hating and fearing and clutching and making war. If there is anything that is destroying humanity, it is corporate greed and those in power making war while ignoring the poor, the children, the elderly, and the infirm. We are told this is what brought down Babylon.

And yet the long term future of humanity is bright, once the present spell of self-destructive behavior is brought to an end. Much will be redeemed in the light of time, but not before the present destructive, wasteful system is changed forever. Love God and love each other the best you are able, folks. Anything else is delusional.

Dates and numbers have long inspired superstitions in some people.

More than a few people expect things to go wrong when Friday the 13th rolls around.

Tuesday -- 06/06/06 -- is another date that some people are wary of because the number 666 is mentioned in the 13th chapter of the Book of Revelation in the Bible.

The number is mentioned in the Bible as being the "mark of the Beast," or Antichrist. Web pages and e-mails are abuzz that bad things will happen Tuesday. Some believe the Antichrist will reveal himself on that date, which will start the tribulation. Others see it as also leading to the time when Jesus will return.

However, religious leaders and other experts warn against putting any significance to the date 06/06/06.

Joe Barnhart, professor of philosophy and religion studies at the University of North Texas, said the author of Revelation was writing for a late-first-century audience, not 21st century.

The Rev. John Stowe, moderator of the Curia/vicar general for the Catholic Diocese of El Paso, said people shouldn't be concerned with the date.

"It is a symbolic number in the Scriptures," Stowe said. "The number seven represents perfection, so six is falling short of perfection."

Barnhart said the number 666 could even be taken as sarcasm.

Barnhart said that throughout history, people have used numerology to interpret 666 as a famous name. Those candidates were the Roman emperor Nero, Napoleon Bonaparte in Tolstoy's "War and Peace" and Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The Rev. Jeff Lambert of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in La Union, N.M., also does not attach any significance to the date.

"The only significance the date has for me is it will be the day after my seventh wedding anniversary," Lambert said. "When the time is right, the significance of all Scriptures will be known to us. We need to leave that in God's hands and until that time live life so that you honor God."

Todd Marler, pastor of Calvary Temple in Northeast El Paso, a Pentecostal church, doesn't see a significance in the date either.

"It's merely a coincidence," Marler said. "No man knows the date or the hour of Jesus' return."

Popular culture has had a fascination with 666 for a long time. More than 20 years ago, a heavy metal band, Iron Maiden, released the song "The Number of the Beast," which many interpreted as a satanic song about the number of the Beast -- 666. The band has said the song is about a nightmare one of the band members had.

Hollywood and others in popular culture are taking advantage.

Conservative author Ann Coulter is releasing her new book, "Godless," on June 6. Also to be released on that date is the final book in the prequels to the "Left Behind" series, which focuses on the second coming of Jesus Christ.

Fans of the heavy metal band Slayer are organizing the National Day of Slayer for that day (www.nationaldayofslayer.org). Fans are encouraged to listen to Slayer at full blast wherever they are. Headphones are a no-no.

The remake of the horror film "The Omen," a film about the Anti christ, will be released on that date, just as the original version was released June 6, 1976.

The movie "The Beast," directed by Brian Flemming, a former fundamentalist Christian, was to be released Tuesday, but has been pushed back for unknown reasons. The movie is about an archaeologist who gives his Christian teenage daughter evidence that proves Jesus never existed.

Marler isn't surprised that Hollywood would try to capitalize.

"Hollywood will do anything to cash in," Marler said.

The ominous date won't even make a blip on the Internet's Rapture Index, which tracks the likelihood of the world ending.

Todd Strandberg, Webmaster of the index, keeps track of floods, famines, droughts, hurricanes, earthquakes and other perceived harbingers of the "rapture" -- Christ's second coming.

He assigns a numerical weight to all these things -- even deception and apostasy.

"The index is very helpful," Strandberg said. "It's a way to standardize prophecy -- you track trends.

"But I can't see that the date 06/06/06 will even be a factor on the index. On the 7th of June, we'll be laughing at this whole thing."

Another problem may be that 666 is the wrong number.

Barnhart said that in Latin, the Hebrew 666 is translated 616, and if numerology is applied to that number, "you have a whole other list of contenders for the meaning of it."

"The author of Revelation used cover language to hide the message from Roman authorities," he said. "A historian only wants to find out what the author meant, instead of attaching modern significance to it. To do so is more misreading than reading of Revelation."

Samantha - Sorry, but "D" did not mean devil. From a reliable historical source: "The Meaning of the "D"
Ever since June 6, 1944, people have been asking what the "D" in "D-Day" means. Does it stand for "decision?" The day that 150,000 Allied soldiers landed on the shores of Normandy was certainly decisive... But the most ordinary and likely of explanations is the one offered by the U.S. Army in their published manuals. The Army began using the codes "H-hour" and "D-day" during World War I to indicate the time or date of an operation's start. Military planners would write of events planned to occur on "H-hour" or "D-day" -- long before the actual dates and times of the operations would be known, or in order to keep plans secret. And so the "D" may simply refer to the "day" of invasion." And that's the way it was, and is. There is NO devil in "D-Day."

Josh - there are holes the size of Alaska in your statement. It makes as much sense as what I once heard that because Ronald Wilson Reagan had 6 letters in his three names, he was the antichrist. What a hoot! And Nostradamus, a reliable historical source, was of the opinion there were 3 "antichrists" - one was Napoleon, one was Hitler, and one was the "man in the blue" (hat or turban) "born in 1962" during the stellium in Aquarius. So much for a girl born recently being the antichrist. Thinking a woman is the antichrist is not only ridiculous, it's extremely uncool. June 6 is nada mucho, people. Stop fearing numbers.

It's funny, isn't it, that '6' is getting such a bad rap. in Numerology '6' is sort of Cancer/4th=house-ish to me - homey, domestic, settling in.

A friend of mine read parts of the Bible in the Greek to which it was first translated from Aramaic. It's nearly comical to me (were it not so NUTS) the way people cling so literallly to words that are not what was written because not only were they translated wrong, but then manipulated for political ends. Now add to that these huge doses of superstion and all the Chicken Little stuff. Well, I"m eager for June 7 simply so we can get back to serious discourse on this most excellent blog!

And if I had to pick what is best about what I know of you (just from this space) it's the combination of erudition & compassion. I think we create our heaven or our hell. Those looking for chaos tomorrow will no doubt find it. A great Chicago songwriter, Steve Goodman had a line that said "if you go lookin' for trouble, trouble will find you --- trouble will find you, it'll deaf, dumb and blind you. If you go lookin' for trouble, let me remind you, you won't have to look very far - trouble in your own backyard." But these naysayers won't look in their own back yard, or better yet, in their own "deep heart's core" (love that phrase which i've coopted from William Butler Yeats).

Hi Diane - I am truly sorry that your friend checked out prematurely. Perhaps by sending the ray of loving kindness to her eternal Spirit you will remind that being that Love in fact conquers all, and that the BS of this plane is in fact, so much BS.

I used to love Steve Goodman, who most would only recognize as the writer of "The City of New Orleans." I saw him live many years ago when I was invited to be a guest at Austin City Limits, and wept when he died of cancer waaaay too young.

I've always believed in the dictum of Lincoln that he believed "A man was just about as happy as he made up his mind to be." This is true about all that troubles humanity. They go lookin' for it, they'll find it, whether good or bad, evil or salvation. "Could be in a bottle, could be in a book, could be in a great work, could be in a look." (Those are my words.)

I've found truth in many ways and places, many times and faces. Robert - thanks again for your kind words. I am looking for ways to remember & honor MaryLynn (my friend who committed suicide). One such is to scan in the photos I have of her & send a letter to her brothers & sister with a great pic I have and just remembering what I loved about her. Will send her mom a condolence card. Hi Edward - Interesting article. I've tried to remind people that there are other calendars, and you're right re: Gregorian shift. I read a while ago that early Christians considered Nero the antichrist, and were afraid he would reincarnate after his suicide. Something about his name adding up to 616. So yes, it is strange that so many are so afraid of numbers that don't even add up. Reagan is the most absurd antichrist I've heard of (though he did provide the seed bed for Cheney, Rummy, and others), while Nostradamus' take on Napoleon and Hitler were that they each brought about an end to a form of the Christian ideal.

Conall - it's really a lot of storm and fury signifying nada.

It's funny... a few weeks ago the chorus to that song -The City of New Orleans - was kicking around in my head, and I started thinking about it in terms of an art project I'm working on. I didn't get around to looking up the lyrics, and didn't know the title, or who wrote or sang it... and voila, here's my information here (thanks Diane and Robert). I have been having connections like that lately. I thought the song sounded prescient, given what happened with hurricane Katrina, and I've since learned that the 1972 song was about the deminse of the nation's railroads... an interesting comparison.

Anyway, I think my point is, it's all about us everyone, not some unknown force.

Robert, I second Diane's sentiments, your spirited comments are always appreciated, and are very inspiring indeed.

Arlo Guthrie made "City of New Orleans" a hit, and yes, it is about the demise of both the railroads and a way of life, a fitting symbol of what has become of America if we use the yardstick of how New Orleans was not taken care of.

You put it perfectly when you said "it's about us everyone, not some unknown force." We have far more ability to bring love, light, and wisdom to Earth than most suspect. We just have to get over fear, attachment, aversion, and delusions that have no reality except in our "vain imaginings."

We adults really should be using our image making ability for more than idle profit making and stimulating the lower emotions.

Hi kim - Sorry, but in the original it was 616, not 666. See the note above. And to repeat myself, Christ never wrote Revelations, nor did God. The Bible is the work of corrupt priests at the Council of Nicea, and the version most use is a mistranslation by the King James scholars of the original works, or a derived 20th century "interpretation" of the KJV.

Frankly, if there is a "beast" it's the global banking system that keeps people indebted, poor, and powerless. And without a driver's license or passport, you cannot travel freely in our world, nor use a credit card if you're in a place where they require ID. Your credit score determines if and where you can buy a home, or a new vehicle, and it's getting so that no one can afford health care, which also requires an ID if you need to go to a hospital. We already ARE at a place where it's difficult to buy or sell, travel or get health care, without an ID number. So look not to "666," but to our totalitarian financial system, to find a real beast.

Hi JHD etc. - You didn't give me a whole lot to work with. From time to time all of us are "not normal," so I wouldn't make too big a deal out of it. "Normal" is highly overrated, and not much fun or productive of creative thinking and acting. The world is usually somewhat dangerous if you're in the wrong place with the wrong people, and if you're 21, you're not a "boy." And of course, it's always good to love God, whichever conception of the Eternal Absolute Force you have. Namaskarams, and Aum Namah Shivaya.
