Every so often I take a break from astrology to post about something extraordinary I have found in my travels. While in the Hamptons last week, I ate at a restaurant where the food and the jazz were equally great. Estia Cantina has amazing gourmet Mexican food that already has me looking forward to the next time I'm out here, and while my dining experience was excellent, it was topped by the jazz group playing that night. Matt Shulman and his sidemen play some of the most far out appealing jazz I've heard.

Doing some research on the major squares and oppositions associated with the end of the Mayan calendar coming in about two thousand days, I thought I'd focus on how to prepare for what's coming. We have extraordinarily dynamic things happening, and haven't seen this particular configuration since 1875 when Saturn was in Aquarius opposition Uranus in Leo, both square Pluto in Taurus throwing the void into Scorpio. No wonder our Native Americans never had a chance. This is an entirely different energy set and release pattern.

Since we have entered the peculiar zone known as Mercury Retrograde, I pulled together various articles I've done in the past weeks about what we can expect from this period. It should be a great retrograde due to the conjunction with Jupiter, helping put the brakes on old Saturn in Leo stuff in our lives that may have been a drag on our line since 2005. This can open up alternative larger views in the areas Scorpio falls in our charts, and connect us deeper with ourselves and others who are part of our future.

This is one of the more sacred times of the year. The ancient Chinese thought this was the season of "cutting and destroying," where the leaves fall, the fruits are available, and the life force begins to go dormant for its Winter rest in the Northern Hemisphere. This period at the end of October, known by many names, is a time to honor the dead. The "Day of the Dead," or Dia de los Muertos, is more than a day. It is a period of depth communion with those who have passed away before us. It is a time to honor our connectedness with our departed but not forgotten loved ones.

A reader asked a simple but profound question: "Something's coming......I don't know what it is...but it's gonna be........good?" I figured this would be a great topic for a post. My response: We've been living with so many oppositions for so long that it's hard to name the bigger thing that's happening. We're getting awarenesses and polarizations, but may not have many words to adequately describe what we're all living within. So we call it the Great Transition, New Age or whatever. This is a polarized time between Great Ages, a period of relative instability where old ideas and ways of living will have to change due to circumstances humanity itself has set into motion.

The comment streams have had some interesting vectors lately. I realized some people might want in on the conversation, since this affects each of us and all of us. One wondered if what's going on was particular, or a generational thing? And yes, people of all ages are experiencing this.

Since August 2006 and until February 2007, all the planets (except the Moon about a third of the month) occupy the span between Saturn in late Leo and Uranus in mid-Pisces, with late Pisces, all of Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, and early Leo unoccupied. This empty span creates an imbalance and sense of division in the atmosphere, defined by the opposition of Saturn and Neptune. We’re living with this for awhile, and it impacts all of us.

I am reminded constantly that we live in very strange, difficult, and stressful times. It seems like everyone I talk to is on the edge of profound personal change, usually not very sure what's happening or how things will turn out, and are unsettled with the ways they are or are not responding to the changes. While feeling edgy in edgy times is understandable, it is also a very driven way to live, and wears on our nerves. While we cannot change the fact that we're all under pressure, we can learn techniques that lessen the pressure, or help us to steer the pressure toward productive ways of moving through the weirdness.
