Today we celebrate the shining star that is the sign of Leo, and explore the qualities of this noble, giving, loving, powerful Fire sign that represents the principle of Solar Fire, one of the three cosmic fires that pervade our solar system. We all have this "kingly" or "queenly" royal quality somewhere in our charts, the area where we are the law, the light, and the center of power holding court in our own private solar system. Leo shows us the way to center ourselves in our higher law.
August is the heart of Summer, a time when a maximum of Solar force helps us continue our creative work begun in the sign of Cancer. This month will expand the externalizing self-gathering and consolidating that Summer symbolizes, stabilizing the life force in Leo, the sign of Fixed Fire.
We decided some things in Cancer that are now showing as a new way of life, self-expression, and enjoyment of how we are connected to doing our being naturally. We are now in a period of extending our enthusiasms and spontaneity – thus a time of traveling, celebration, vacation, and family involvements before the return of more practical matters in September, the time of Virgo, the harvester.
This period indicates dramatic combustions that force us to release old patterns and demonstrate new ones more appropriate to who we really are. Find a larger vision, new friends, new goals and ambitions, and if there is a sense of frustration, decrease egoism and be more inspired and flexible. Beware of excessive pride or jealousy in self or others, and try to remember that each is the center of their own Solar system, and that as a rule two different Suns in too close a proximity usually generate sunspots, Solar flare-ups, and turn everything within range a little crispy.
August is usually dominated by the Fire sign energies of Leo, and this month is no exception, showing the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Saturn all occupying that sign. Other strong influences predominating this month are Mars in Gemini and Jupiter in Sagittarius. Mars and Neptune in Air signs will feed the Fire of the Leo and Sag planets, while leter in the month we end the last period of no Earth for many years when Sun and Mercury slip into Virgo. This will renew our grounding or practicality after so many months of few if any planets in Earth signs. We will now have planets in Earth for many decades to come.
This is a month where the Fire and Air elements continue to be very strong, lending inspiration, warmth, light and expanded interactions to all that we are doing. When the Sun spotlights Leo, we are shown the light in this phase of the twelve-step evolutionary process that what was stabilized in Taurus, expanded in Gemini, and consolidated in Cancer undergoes a fundamental combustion showing as a creative projection of that energy, preparing for the practical refinements and adjustments when the Sun enters Virgo. This month the new initiatives and vision offered back when Jupiter was in Leo (2003) will continue to take shape due to Saturn in Leo and the Sun vitalizing that structure.
Leo is symbolically associated with the Lion, a sign representing the regal, self-sufficient, magnificent ruler of their own domain, fierce, quick, sensitive, and noble. The more evolved Leos demonstrate the wisdom-power of the little cats, sent by Bastet, the Great Cat of ancient Egypt, to teach humanity how to serve the Divine Order through all its local manifestations in our house cats. In the year cycle we can now use the needs and decisions we discovered and made in Cancer to act creatively on our own behalf.
We now know what we care about, and can act decisively on that. In our Leo experience each year we renew our connectedness with life, on the basis of the Cancer experience where we found stability and emotional identification with our widened vision of ambition or worldly service begun in Aquarius, the sign showing us how Leo exteriorizes. This was deepened in Pisces, glimpsed and communicated in Aries, concretized and anchored in Taurus and incorporating new ideas and information in Gemini.
Mythologically, Leo is the sign of the King/Queen, the ruling nobility of that which shines eternally, the central force of light and heat in any fixed field of activity. This function is the direct representative of that which bestows life, the central order of any given "realm." It also is the Orphan, in that the ruler has no one to defer to, no one who can make the decisions that must be made about the order of things, the laws of the system.
Leo is where the buck stops and starts, and as such symbolizes the Divine Power of Spiritual force used to curse or bless, destroy or allow. In the wisdom-tradition, it is said that there are good Kings and Queens, as well as bad ones. Historically, we have Arthur as the symbol of the good King that blesses the knights to embrace their holy quests, and Herod as the symbol of the bad King, one who would destroy all life that might someday challenge his hegemony.
Leo, when freed of the traps of pride, inflexibility, egocentrism, sulking, vanity, arrogance, and dictatorial childishness, demonstrate a magnanimous dignity and authority that is fearless, courageous, honorable, humble, devoted, and self-sacrificing. This is a playful sign, and can be the best of companions when among their loyalists. Sometimes oblivious to threats (as they will not even deign to acknowledge them!), they are fierce in protecting their own.
They are loyal, and expect it in return. And, like the mother lion whose cubs are threatened, they will fight to the death to protect their offspring, both literal and figurative. They are the embodiment of love incarnate, and when well adjusted, show as powerful leaders, friends to all, and a force majure in any thing they are involved in. They are capable of becoming world leaders who change their world forever through their light and power.
Think Helena P. Blavatsky, aka "HPB," who brought the Eastern Wisdom to the Western world, founded the world-wide theosophical movement, and is revered as a saint in parts of Asia for the restoration of Buddhism. A voluminous writer of books, and translator of the legendary Tibetan text "Voice of the Silence," she gave the world the awe-inspiring volumes of "The Secret Doctrine," a miracle translation work of ancient historical chronicles outlining the "cosmogenesis" and "anthropogenesis" for our solar system and Earth.
In it are the foundations of all we know about creation mythologies, the powers latent in the human vehicle, auras, chakras, the seven planes of our known existence, and Mu and Atlantis, to name just a few subjects covered. It is the source material for anyone who would understand humanity's awesome Spiritual nature and heritage. The other founder of the Theosophical Society was also a Leo, Henry Steel Olcott. Besides this gift to the world, he was renowned as a man of absolute integrity who cleaned up several corrupt departments in the American government and a highly respected author of many spiritual works.
Another world-altering Leo was Napoleon, Emperor of France who ended an old world order and ushered in a new era for Europe, the Americas, and even the rule of law itself. Napoleonic Law is somewhat different than other kinds of law, and is still a force in the world today. Leo potentate Henry Ford created an idea, an empire, and his name is ubiquitous even to this day.
In the movies, we have magnificent examples of the dramatic and creative quality Leo brings to each project. Our stellar sign features directors Alfred Hitchcock, John Huston, Stanley Kubrick, Roman Polanski, Peter Bogdanovich, Norman Jewison, Melvin Van Peebles, Blake Edwards, John Derek, Betty Thomas, John Landis, and heavyweight producers Cecil B. DeMille, Norman Lear, M. Night Shyamalan, and movie mogul Sam Goldwyn.
Among legendary actors and actresses in theater, and movies, a list for all time that includes Mae West, William Powell, Gene Kelly, Bob Mitchum, "cowardly lion" Bert Lahr, Billie Burke, Jason Robards Jr., Keenan Wynn, Ethel Barrymore, Walter Brennan, Myrna Loy, Peter O'Toole, Robert Shaw, Jane Wyatt, Maureen O'Hara, Shelly Winters, Mike Connors, Rhonda Fleming, Louise Fletcher, Carl "Alfalfa" Switzer, Esther Williams, Arlene Dahl, and Rory Calhoun.

The list continues with the great Tony Bennett, Eddie Fisher, Jimmy Webb, Paul Anka, Buck Owens, Mel Tillis, Jimmy Dean, George Shearing, Jim Reeves, and Dead shaman Jerry Garcia.

Lovecraft, James Baldwin, Raymond Chandler, Aldous Huxley, Ray Bradbury, Zelda Fitzgerald, Ogden Nash, J.K. Rowling, Alex Haley, and Garrison Keilor.
Presidents include Bill Clinton, Herbert Hoover, and Benjamin Harrison. Other political Leos include such figures as First Ladies Jacqeline Kennedy Onassis, Roselyn Carter and the political matriarch Rose Kennedy. Other political legends include Davy Crockett, Fidel Castro, Simon Bolivar, Barack Obama, Arnold Schwartzenegger, Bill Bradley, Benito Mussolini, and T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), also a noted author.
Other Leos who made their mark on our world for all time: Meriwether Lewis (of Lewis and Clark), Neil Armstrong, (first man on the Moon), Gene Roddenberry, creator of Star Trek, Alexander Calder, Jean Piaget, and Karl Menninger. Add to this eclectic bunch trick shooter Annie Oakley, seminal Afro-American figure Marcus Garvey, the legendary Ralph Bunche, co-founder of the UN and first black to win the Nobel Peace Prize, Yankees coach Casey Stengel, John Scopes of "monkey trial" fame, Apple founder Steve Wozniak, chef Julia Child, and Alex Trebek.
More famous Leos include sports stars Wilt Chamberlain, Magic Johnson, Patrick Ewing, David Robinson, Hulk Hogan, Rocky Colavito, Roger Clemens, and A-Rod, as well as unique figures Martha Stewart, WWI spy Mata Hari, Dino DeLaurentis, Yves Saint Laurent, Rudi Gernreich, mind-science guru Jose Silva, aviation pioneers Orville Wright and Amelia Earhart, Dag Hammarskjold, first Secretary General of the UN, humanitarian Raoul Wallenberg, and extraordinary comedians Robin Williams, Stan Freberg, and Firesign Theater founder Phil Proctor, three of the funniest guys who ever made us laugh.
In the world of astrology we find four greats in Alan Leo, Max Heindel, Llewellyn George, and Sydney Omarr, and in the spiritual world we have the amazing Sri Yukteswar and Sri Aurobindo.
Finally, a big happy Leo birthday to the first underwater telegraph cable, NASA, the international cities of Bath, Berlin, Blackpool, Bombay, Bristol, Damascus, Jerusalem, Portsmouth, Prague, Rome, and US cities Miami, Montpelier, Chicago, Baltimore, Boston, Albany, Warwick, and Charleston. The states of Colorado, Missouri, New York, and Hawaii are under the sign of Leo, as are the nations of India, France, Madagascar, and Italy. Tanti Auguri, and Viva vino!

Hi Robert,
AND ME!!! I love being a Leo. I am at my best when I operate at the higher form of Leo.
Don't know why, but I have always gotten a big kick over the fact that Robert Redford and I have the same birthday.
Peace,
Helen
P.S. Remember when I thought that the worst was over for Saturn Conjunct Sun. Well, it kicked me in the butt on Tuesday. I will have more details later.

Hi Robert Again,
I love the way that Lucille Ball started her autobiography, "I am a Leo." Enough said.
Hope your move is going well.
Peace,
Helen

Hi Robert -- long time - no connection! I just got back from Russia where I took care of some things, such as my mom's grave and monument and our house, which now is mine, so I had to deal with this "real estate" issue. Plus it only will be resolved in about 6 to 8 months. I miss my favorite Leo - my mom. House lost it's warm strength and sad without her in it. I will have to cell it.
In a meantime, I spent 18 days in a faboulous health resort in Russia, I feel like they completely spoiled me with all those pumpering procedures. It was a place for relaxation, rejuvenation and rebirth, so to speak. So I slept, ate, had all kind of baths, mud treatments and quiet enjoyment of that remote beautiful resort. I didn't want to leave. But I am back in FTL, and ready to soak into "normal" life. :-). I hope all is well with you. I missed talking to you. Somehow I didn't email ANYONE for 6 weeks and now I am re-appearing and hearing all sorts of news around.

Hi carrie ann - Probably as long as it takes to change the selfish, entitlement-driven national mentality that allows war criminals and Earth polluters to put money ahead of a better world. Things are changing, but no one is really representing anything good for our nation and our world in the future; both political parties have sold out the citizenry. We need more, fairer, accountable representation of the population.
Hi Helen - May you go on to have such artistic excellence and global stewardship of culture that Redford has shown us. Saturn on the Sun finishes a long cycle, but begins another, where we must live the truth of our experience. It doesn't end the quest and challenges for enlightenment! And of course, Lucy was a true pioneer in many ways using Desilu as a vehicle.
Hi Larisa - Wondered where you were, glad you've been doing well and productive. Transformation of assets is good for opening doors to greater life adventures. Rest and regeneration are good. Am presently on a transcontinental mission, computer crashed, and will be in Texas within three days on the way back west. Welcome back!

Greetings Robert... Great Leaping (Kitty Cats)! Looks like I've got a packed 12th house again..... what say you to this (?) ..... Venus Rx exact on my asc. @ 29' Leo, w/ (our dear friend) Saturn exact on my Mars (conj. Regulus, the heart of the Lion)@ 27' Leo, just above the asc. And, to further the wonderful drama, trans. Sun is conj. my Pluto@ 18' Leo w/ Mercury zipping down the path to transit all of these in the 12th....... should I just go into the closet and implode now? It's intense, many back-tracks, and though I am "patient", it's a bit much for even "the lunar goddess" to deal with, lol........... I especially need to focus on your statement... (Leo shows us the way to center ourselves in our HIGHER law)........ thank you, Robert..... my best to you in your travels, and will probably connect with you back in the 'Golden State' soon (-: (hope you are weathering the lightning bolts ok.....) *P.S. - (For you with a "Crowded House", this is from my heart...)
"There is freedom within, there
is freedom without
Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup
There's a battle ahead, many battles
are lost
But you'll never see the end of the road
While you're travelling with me
Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
when the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know that they won't win
Now I'm towing my car, there's a hole in
the roof
My possesions are causing me
suspicion, but there's no proof
In the paper today, tales of war and
of waste
But you turn right over to the TV page
Now I'm walking again to the beat of
a drum
And I'm counting the steps to the door
of your heart
Only shadows ahead, barely clearing
the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation
and relief
Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come,they come
To build a wall between us
Don't ever let them win

Hello,
My b-day is Aug. 17,(same day as Robert Deniro and Mae West) and I love being a Lioness!
Posted by: Stacy | August 11, 2007 at 05:53 PM
Hi Robert, Stacy
I LOVE being a lioness too! A message to my fellow Leos: You were born under the best sign in zodiac. You are the kings and queens of the zodiac. Act like it!!!
Peace,
Helen
P.S. I need advice on how to deal with the gas company. They have threaten to shut off the gas if I don't give them $900 by yesterday which right now I don't have. Any suggestions? Robert? Anyone?
Posted by: Helen | August 12, 2007 at 02:40 AM
Hi Robert: I am smiling as I am typing this: wanted to say to the previous comment that Aries is the best sign in zodiak. The first and the best. Leos must think they are the best, they must do something with their pride. Why to hide it, right? ;-)
My rising is Leo, so I am sharing joy of Leos. Salut to big hearted Leos! Robert, my Leo rising twin, salut!
I am loving this month of August! Have fun, everyone. Larissa (Aries Sun, Leo rising).
Posted by: Larisa | August 12, 2007 at 12:08 PM
Hi Robert,
That goes for Leo rising, too!! But we all know that Aries has to be first!!
I had to lead a meeting once with an Aries. I just let them be an Aries. Sometimes you have to be the neck! (It was my Libra rising-I love being a Leo with a Libra rising. :)
As I have a plaque in my home office: It's good to be Queen. :)
Peace,
Helen
P.S. Today's new moon in Leo is also in my 10th as was last month's new moon on my MC. This new moon is conjuncting my Mercury and right on my Pluto, sextiling my Neptune. New job coming in soon?
Again, many thanks for all your wisdom. Pat his royal highness for me.

I treat Leos like children. :-)

Meowww!!!
(Robert, please come back... you're Divine presence is sorely missed...)
With Love, Diana :-} ----*

Hi Diana - Well, am getting to comment sporadically, but hopefully will be more regular in the near future. Venus RX should have helped you reconnect with many inner and outer Venusian things and people. Saturn should be showing you what has finished and what is long haul for the future. The lightning on the road has been awesome. And thanks for the great lyrics! As I once wrote, "Light comes from many sources, who knows from where it comes? When we complete each journey, we find we've just begun..." No walls - only doors and windows.....
Hi Stacy - DeNiro and Mae West? You must be quite a mugger for the camera!
Hi Helen - Hope your gas co. biz got worked out. Usually there are "emergency conditions" that can be asserted along with paying at least part to keep the wolves from the door. I trust your Libra Rising was able to find a solution. The recent 10th house activity should jumpstart that area. Will gladly pet his majesty when I get off the road.
Hi Larissa - Glad you're back. Aries and Leo are interestingly similar and different, but get along so well that the energies are often confused by those observing the dance. And yes, a gigantic salute (would they accept any other type?) to all the Leo in all our charts! It provides us all with strength, flair, and style, and helps us get on stage to do our thing.
Posted by: Robert | August 15, 2007 at 07:00 AM
Hi Robert, Yes! Salut to Leos in our charts! I have a question: how come in my chart Leo is in the first and second house? Is it possible? Thank you
Posted by: Larissa | August 15, 2007 at 07:28 AM
Hi Robert,
Yes, the gas bill got worked out in the most amazing way possible. Thanks for really caring about my situation.
Today, I am working on the energy from my solar return of yesterday. It was one of my best solar returns ever! I was in a bookstore for it.
Just wanted to say I am grateful for your friendship and wise council. I hope to glean of it in the year again. I will post more in a few days.
I also want to thank everyone who has ever posted to the website. We have been put here to support one another.
Peace,
Helen

PS-"King" Bambino salutes your King!!!
Posted by: Helen | August 19, 2007 at 01:22 PM
Hi Larissa - Yes, due to the phenomenon of "interception." It occurs when we're born in the far northern or southern latitudes, which skews the house divisions in our charts. No doubt you also have Aquarius on the 7th and 8th houses, and a couple of signs intercepted in one of the other houses.
Hi Helen - Good news about the gas bill working out satisfactorily. Of course you're most welcome for whatever help I can offer here. And I personally think the people who come here are by and large a great support system for all who want to learn and grow. Please tell his majesty that the King sends his regards.
Posted by: Robert | August 20, 2007 at 07:54 AM
Hi Robert: Last two days have been a bit intense with some hanging pressure to decide or not to decide, to change or not to change plus some popping up signs from everywhere pushing to change in favor of better life? Why is that? Especially today, what a day indeed! What is out there today that holds a hairball in my stomach? Something is out there, I am not sure what
Posted by: Larissa | August 21, 2007 at 01:34 PM
Hi Robert - precisely I have Aquarius on the 7th and 8th houses! I just pulled my natal chart out. How did you know!? What does it mean, if it means anything?
Posted by: Larisa | August 21, 2007 at 04:58 PM
Robert, where are you?
Posted by: Larisa | August 21, 2007 at 05:13 PM
Hi Larisa - Am busy catching up on things neglected while I was on the road, and I must take time away from the computer as too many hours typing makes my back and shoulders hurt. As for recent pressure, could come from lots of things, including recent Mercury and Sun conjunct Saturn. Remember Leo transits stress your Moon. If a person has Leo on two houses, they MUST have Aquarius on the opposite houses. Which means there must be two intercepted signs as well somewhere. Intercepted signs and two houses with the same sign mean a lot of things, too numerous to discuss here, but I'll try to do an article soon. Briefly, it shows your 1st and 7th houses are fairly narrow, while the houses of your intercepted signs are very wide and diverse.
Posted by: Robert | August 22, 2007 at 06:33 AM
Thank you, Robert. I didn't mean to interrupt your work, and didn't mean to be a pain, as I am sometimes. I don't want your shoulders to be hurt.
I agree - I felt my Moon was trapped by all this Leo activities. Thank you for your explanation. Be gentle on yourself in your work and excuse my up and down questions. I could feel that you think that I am a pain sometimes. :-) Talk to you soon.
Posted by: Larissa | August 22, 2007 at 11:45 AM
Hi Larissa - You're not a pain. It's just sometimes I must take a break from the keyboard or suffer the consequences. Remember, I also have other things to do outside of this site such as petting and feeding his Majesty and the other local manifestations of the Great Cat who are here to teach me how to be a good servant. ;-)
Posted by: Robert | August 22, 2007 at 02:21 PM
I understand, Robert. I am myself chronically short of time. Of course, respond when you have time. Cats demand attention.:-) Mine is starring at me now, as we speak.
regarding my chart, I do recall that someone long time ago told me that in any new relationship, I must live thru mid january till mid Feb - time when "real" qualities of that person must show up. I did not quite understand whether it was about that particular year or in general. Please say hi from me to your Majesty. My cat was locke dup in a boarding place for 6 weeks, so I don't know whether he forgave me or not. But the place is fantastic - classical music for cats, etc.
Posted by: Larisa | August 22, 2007 at 05:04 PM
Hi Robert,
One more post on this subject and I'm done. Wasn't Sydney Omarr an Leo, too?
Peace,
Helen
PS My Majesty is teaching me all about being a good servant also. :)
Posted by: Helen | August 22, 2007 at 05:11 PM
Hi Larissa (and Helen, and all servants of the local manifestations of The Great Cat) - Just remember that when they're staring at you, they're beaming thoughts into your brain. It's our job to figure out what picture they're beaming, and how to serve that noble intention. (It must be noble, or they wouldn't be beaming it!) I'm sure your majestic owner's forgiveness is boundless, and will be evident after they bite you a few times and purr generously after you've devoted enough time and attention to them and promised them you'll never run away from home and get lost again. That's what they think when we're gone for too long (like a day or more!)
Larissa, as a Leo rising, the time of the year you mention is when the inner planets move through our 6th and 7th houses, showing us where our partners are coming from, their motives, and how they view a relationship with us.
Hi Helen - Yes, a Leo, Libra rising, Moon in Cancer born Sydney Kimmelman, Aug 05, 1926, 11:27 AM EDT, Philadelphia, PA. Thanks for the heads up - I just added him to the article.
Posted by: Robert | August 23, 2007 at 07:39 AM
Thank you Robert! Well, I must say that my Stoli (cat), beams a lot of stuff in my head, because he starres at me steadily without blinking for 30 minutes while laying down on the carpet, sometimes it makes me laugh and I ask him, " what are you looking at?" :-) He forgave me for going away for a long time, because he knows how much I love him and will always come back, he rubs and pushes against me non stop, whether I am standing ot sitting or sleeping. He follows me like a magnet. :-)
Posted by: Larissa | August 23, 2007 at 08:33 AM
Hi Robert,
You are indeed welcome. I understand that Sydney Omarr was one of the eariler defenders of astrology and relished taken on anyone detractors.
For defending the art and science of astrology, he is truly Sydney the Lionhearted!
Peace,
Helen
