The Winter Solstice occurs December 21 at 10:08 pm PST, which is 1:08 am EST and 6:23 am GMT December 22. Thus for everyone east of MST, the Solstice occurs on December 22. This is the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, and from now on the Solar force will get longer and stronger, a welcome relief for those of us who need lots of sunshine to keep our dispositions equally sunny.
This Solstice has Virgo rising from Santa Monica (PST) east through Austin Texas (CST). EST has Libra rising, London, Amsterdam, and Estonia have Sagittarius rising, Istanbul has Capricorn rising, Bagdad has Aquarius rising, New Delhi has Pisces rising, W. Australia has Aries rising, and Melbourne has Taurus rising.
It is said that a chart done for the Winter Solstice gives us a picture of the next year, or at the very least a snapshot of what is to come the next 13 weeks. With Sun exactly conjunct Jupiter at 1 Capricorn, I'm sure there will be major power plays and new leadership come to the fore globally, especially with the quintile to Uranus. Though Mercury is separating its quintile to Uranus, expect inspired thinking and acting along lines that should show very quick expansion however this affects your chart.Saturn, ruler of the Sun, Mercury, and Jupiter, is in a very strong trine to all of these, showing sound growth and development along practical lines to consolidate the threshold state Saturn indicates at the degree of its retrograde station. The Sabian Symbol indicates this is a degree of "original genius" of our Soul's expression "unconcerned with collective values." However the Capricorn planets express themselves in our specific areas indicated by what houses they fall in, expect forms of self expression to come out that are original specialized expressions of what you've done before but unrelated to any tradition.
It's a Splay Jones pattern, so expect diverse activities that have little to do with each other and expressions that may at times be "at odds" with other needs. Of course, the primary influence is Mars in opposition to the Sun, Mercury, and Jupiter from Cancer on its way to the opposition with Pluto in Gemini on the way in early January. This will challenge us to get a grip on our assertiveness, take a new look at old rationalizations that don't serve the need for Soul expression, and breathe into the Uranian quintile-tredecile to the multiple oppositions.
So despite the polarizations and oppositions to come, there will be unique gifts, realizations, and interactive blessings to be captured if we can find a new inspiration and figure out how to manifest it in a form that serves some collective need or emptiness. I have no doubt there will be more than one radical "karmic confrontation" coming these next 90 days, with those who are immature or inexperienced having a lot to learn from those who are wiser from their experience.
With Mars retrograde, there may be a continuance of the feeling of the pace being slower than asphalt, and remember that a lot that has been and is being done will probably go through reversals or revisions at some point in the not so distant future. Also expect some things to crash in a big way in March 2008 due to the planetary positions.
The Moon is Gibbous in a triseptile with Sun, Mercury, Jupiter and Pluto, showing a fork in the road for all relative to who they interact with and why. This triggers the Grand Irrationality in an ongoing way for the next 13 weeks, along with generalized questing and searching for an illumination or revelation. Expect dramatic results whenever the Moon occupies any of the 7 "hot zones" of the Grand Irrationality.
Because the Lunar Sabian Symbol speaks of efficiency and reform, and the square to Saturn shows the release pattern, learn how to make basic decisions that help you integrate your responsibilities with your sensitivity and don't yield to discouraging impressions. Develop your insights, and adjust your sense of proportion or perspective so you can quicken your pace by dropping everything superfluous while gaining a mellow wisdom that can help you to help others.
On a final note, the Winter Solstice ushers in a season dedicated to "seeds in latency," those that will sprout in March when the light force is stronger, the ground is warmer, and Spring is on the way (at least in the Northern Hemisphere). The Solstices and Equinoxes are special points in the year cycle, marking the end of one season and the beginning of the next one. They are great for getting clear about our resolve, and what we want to see made manifest in times to come.
Whether you're in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere, there is a special ritual I do each year that yields some fairly spectacular results. I wrote about it last Winter Solstice, so if you're interested in checking out a simple but powerful thought form exercise that can show up in some interesting ways, please re-visit It's the Winter Solstice!
To close, in this time of transition from the old year into the Winter of the new, take a moment to note what has left your life the past year. This created space for things to come more appropriate to your evolution and well being. Then take another moment to welcome in something better than you've known up to now, putting it up and out into the "Spiritual atmosphere" so that Divine Mother can bring it forth for you in the coming months. And if you feel like doing a Solstice ritual, whether this one or another, open to your greatest good and highest possibility of happiness, and you just may find a measure of that in the coming year.
Mahalo, Aloha, Namaskarams, Aum Namah Shivaya, and Happy New Year!

Hi Robert,
One Question? Does your ritual have to be done at the precise moment or is there any leeway?
Peace,
Helen

Beautifully said, Robert. Each year between Solstice and New Year's Eve (whenever feels appropriate at the time),I do something similar in my backyard fire pit. I call it my "Burning Bowl" ritual. And I do believe that YOU are part of one of my intentions for 2006 when I said I wanted to become more knowledgeable about astrology. I discovered your blog within the week. :)

Hi Robert and everyone,
Gosh, you make me smile...I wonder if it is all that Aries on my south node. But truly, something from the past comes up to bite me, and I think, breathe through and have a little look at Aquarius Papers.
Tomorrow the 22nd I will be having dinner and a wee drink with the poets, and I will be burning my 'Burden Bundle', made from especially collected birch twigs, each one named for a 'worry' and tied properly, each one ready to be purified and let go of...says Taurus, I will because I can.
Cheers to you all
From Melbourne, feels like the tropics here today

Rob - I too am interested in the answer to Helen's question re: timing for your ritual. Another question for you - you mention "karmic confrontations" in this article and in a reading you did for me you mention "karmic adjustment periods." Could you comment on how you spot these and what they generally mean? Or write an "Astrology 101: The astrology of karma" type of article?

Hi Robert,
Great info on the Solstice. Just threw a chart for my location and found two interesting things:
1. The Part of Fortune is exactly conjunct Mars
2. The ascendant is exactly conjunct my personal ascendant.
What do you make of that?
Keep up the excellent work!

Hi Helen - I do my ceremony as close to the Solstice as I can, but not to the point where I'm waking up at 3 am.;-) I believe that we can do it just before the Solstice, or as long as the Sun is at 1 Capricorn, so tonight or tomorrow should be just fine. Clarity of intention of what you want to leave and what you want to come in is far more important than 10 minutes either way. (Now weddings are another matter...)
Hi Lorna - Glad I could be one of your "demonstrations from Spirit" last year. The "Burning Bowl" is a very powerful ritual that can produce some fairly spectacular results.
Hi Diane and Felita - Glad two such Spirits from "down under" can hook up here and exchange information. Glad it's tropical there. Very cold up here, but it's nice to have 4 seasons again after years in Lalaland, where the seasons are Spring, Grey, Wildfire, and Mudslide.
Hi Ondrea - I've answered the first, so blessings and enjoy! As for karmic confrontations, that relates specifically to 16 Virgo and 6 Leo. Karmic adjustments may be associated with 5 Cancer, but there are other degrees that are important in a "karmic" sense. Karmic adjustment periods could have to do with the 12th house, or even the 6th if they relate to someone we're dealing with. And I've written some articles on karma which I may repost over the holidays while I'm writing other stuff.
Hi Dirk - I visited your website and will list it on my blogroll soon. I'd appreciate it if you'd list this site as well, preferably on the left side of your front page. As you can see, I tend to put my astrological and metaphysical friends on the left and the artists and others on the right. PF is 14 Taurus in Amsterdam at Solstice, so I assume it's conjunct your Mars. Shows joy and forms of fortune coming from and through your Mars function these next 13 weeks. The Solstice Asc conjunct your Asc shows that this period will show you things about your instincts, your body, and your self image that are your unique part to play this lifetime. Enjoy the self-revelations!
And to everyone, Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and all the blessings of the Solstice to all of you!

Hi Robert,
Thank you so much for this valuable info. I will be doing a ritual tonight. Was looking for a group in SD, but no luck, so I guess it is important for me to do my own. Give my full attention to it, eh? It's so great that it is close to the full moon. Does that give a little extra punch? Just as a side note, still haven't decided between San Diego and Canada yet and unfortunately never made it back to New Mexico on a time that you had available. We will meet and it will be in 2008. I'll definitely connect with you via e-mail. Hugs, and positive energy, BIG LOVE, Lauri

Dear Robert, With the moon running in my 1st house today and forcast of snow on the mountains, very bleak in melbourne today. I feel restricted. I understand Cappricorn earth signs are running through my 8th house of transformation. I affirmed my Taurus energy at the solstice, grounding myself and hoping to manifest money and stability in this area, bumped into 3 Taurean friends yesterday co-incidently and recognised their strong stability in material things. Grand irratinality at play today, thought of Saturn conj Pluto in 4th hse Virgo. My earth energy travels through water houses and involves Pluto, Saturn, Mars. Need to know the blocks. Oh! to be born an earth sign would make it alot easier. I suppose i'll flow with the Gemini moon today. When it is timely for you could you shed some light on Saturn's effect on my natal Pluto virgo 4th. as i feel it is confining me and i cant consolidate the changes in my life that i need. p.s going to the zoo for Christmas. Something completely different.
Thanking you again for your writings.
Have a wonderful christmas. Aum Shanti Felita

Where do you find all of this information? Your post doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. I would like to learn more about what you are saying here.

Dear Robert and others. Must tell you this
Felt an incredible dark energy around me this morning, tried to get to the core of it, analysed alot, still a pervasive feeling of doom. Yuck!, as i looked out of the window at torrential rains and gale force winds, I prayed for protection for all those on our roads,I thought this is Pluto out my window and was crying(damn Mars in Cancer) The energy was so intense, so I played Gyoto monks chanting to clear and purify.
I had to drive my son to work, with the weather abysmal, I drove carefully.Noticed a lady in a volvo driving quite fast,my son said randomely "at least if she is in an accident her car wont crumble like ours" I said Aum Namah shivayha, 30 sec later a huge pine tree literally lifted out of the earth and fell across the highway and as the lady in the volvo was in the other lane ahead of us she braked and drove up the fallen tree (she is miraculously unharmed), We braked just in front of it. The highway is still blocked this was about 90 minutes ago. The 30 sec delay to turn the cd (chants)off saved our lives. the timing factor was amasing. My God i felt this coming. and as my son said("oh my God the Gyoto monks saved our lives) an incredible awakening for him and the reassurance of the constant protection we have. I am sure there is some astrology influences to this. I will just stay with my gratefulness with this. May the universe protect us all from calamities and injustices. Aum namah shivayha. Felita.

Hi Felita, Robert and all,
Remember me from Melbourne? Got to comment on your experience Felita, glad you and your son are all right. Me, Mars in Cancer too, my mother, as in "the past comes back to bite me",( Pluto/Uranus conjunct moon(w) 6th house, squ Sun 3rd), drives a Volvo, she loves that car, and yes, they are famous for not crumbling...me, Venus 5 37 Cancer "At a railway crossing, an automobile is wrecked by a train" - I do not drive, never have driven...(my grandmother (maternal), was run over by a train, lived as a double amputee, till 86).Can't I be "Game birds feathering their nest"(?), either way I get the Saturn opposition.
I hope all that dark energy has run its course(whoops, that's a bit Freudian), I feel things cooking too.
I can only agree with you and hope that the one unifying force keeps us all from harm, and gives us the necessary lessons, without too much suffering, please.
The collective is weaving... new cloth...maybe?
Breathe through... I am trying to take my own advice.
Bye to all

Dear Dianne M, Thankyou for commenting i suppose we feel similiar planetary influences as we know the same place energies. I stay strong in my awareness and connections that spirit gives me through likeminded souls. My mars is in Taurus about 28'on ascendant line maybe this energy came through the solstice for me. Mars wherever it is pushes out of me. I will stay strong in positive energise of mars taurus(whatever that is) I still feel daunted by the experience. Will stay practical.Thankyou for the reminder to rise from my Dukkha as soon as is possible and stay light and bright but still protected , A leo, you know we think we are impenaterable, a bit too bright. A spiritual lesson for my son. Bless you for your concern. Aum shanti Felita

Dear Felita and Robert,
I felt a lot of dark energy yesterday too... yuck! I'm glad you're fine and looking at life brightly today. Whatever was around yesterday, shifted. I feel so much better today, happy solstice to you and all.
Robert, was there something extraordinary about yesterday (21st)?

Hi Lauri - One of the community here is an old friend of mine in SD who is part of a meditation group who do Full Moon gatherings, so I don't know where you are in SD but if you're near Rapid City I can hook you up. Glad you did your ritual anyway, since you are the magnetic center that attracts all good things. Yes, the Full Moon should bring some things to rapid manifestation, whether attraction or repulsion. And of course I'm also looking forward to connecting in 2008.
Hi Felita - Remember this is a time of many oppositions, so expect internal and external polarizations and realizations. 8th house helps us both concentrate and create space so as to attract through our magnetism what we need to fulfill the process in the 10th. Remember we ALL have ALL the signs - it is up to us to recognize how to apply them skillfully. No sign has it any easier or harder than any other. It is in our planets that we find ease or difficulty. "Someone told me it's all happening at the zoo, I do believe it, I do believe its true..." Animals are very sweet in their lack of guile. Great way to spend time contemplating the natural world.
Hi Gilbert - Well, this information is what I've learned over many decades. Sorry it doesn't make much sense, but I'm sure if you pick through several articles you'll find some interesting things to ponder. You can start here.
Hi again Felita - These are the oppositions we're dealing with, the storm from mid-December through early January that is very strong. What you give us is a truly amazing story of living within the Divine Presence. I have been telling people for quite a while that Divine Mother energy is rising stronger and stronger as this century progresses, and we all are a part of It. The more we recognize it and live it and breathe it in all its forms, from Gyoto monks to honoring the natural world, from meditation to acts of practical kindness, improving our minds and our ability to serve the best we're able, the more we tap into those energies. Truly thanks to Spirit for sparing you in the midst of the great darkness. A closely parallel thing happened to me VERY recently. One second can make the difference between life and death. That's a good thing to remember, as it helps us stay mindful of the Divine Presence. Yes, a major wake up call for your son, something he'll never forget. Truly, Aum Namah Shivaya! Merry Christmas indeed!
Hi Diane - Well, your Venus is the Sabian Symbol for 6 Cancer, but 5 degrees is so close as to be a hot spot. That degree may also be in aspect to some other point in your chart. Thanks for reminding me that meditating for "least harm to the good" during these times to come is a good mindfulness practice. We are weaving a collective cloth by our dedication to the One we all are together.
Hi Elizabeth - Well, it was the Solstice, so yes, it's a special time. What's happening is a combination of Venus square Neptune along with the conjunctions to Pluto in close opposition to Mars with Jupiter on the critical degree of 1 Capricorn, a major influence in itself. We're still moving through the zone, with oppositions and polarizations quickly shifting from one point to another teaching us how to adapt and be good surfers. Merry Christmas, Happy Solstice, and may all be blessed and protected in these times.

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The Lakota Indians, who gave the world legendary warriors Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, have withdrawn from treaties with the United States, leaders said Wednesday.
"We are no longer citizens of the United States of America and all those who live in the five-state area that encompasses our country are free to join us," long-time Indian rights activist Russell Means told a handful of reporters and a delegation from the Bolivian embassy, gathered in a church in a run-down neighborhood of Washington for a news conference.
A delegation of Lakota leaders delivered a message to the State Department on Monday, announcing they were unilaterally withdrawing from treaties they signed with the federal government of the United States, some of them more than 150 years old......

Hi Robert,
I did the Winter Solstice and/or Burning Bowl ritual last night and I have some suggestions and/or caveats.
First of all I did my ritual in my stainless steel kitchen sink in a stainless steel bowl. I also made sure that any paper (other than what I WAS going to burn), curtains, etc were out of the way. Also my cats were out of the kitchen.
I had great fun burning what I didn’t want to Tears to Fears “Shout” “Shout, Shout. Let it all out. These are the things I can do without.” I sung those words as I lit each representation of what I didn’t’ want. As I lit the papers and watched it start to burn up, I took keen delight watching each paper feed on one other until they were all burned up.
When I started on the things I wanted to attract for 2008, I used the song also from Tears for Fears, “Sowing the Seeds of Love.” “Anything is possible while you are sowing the seeds of love.” I would sing those lyrics when I lit the representations of what I wanted. I found that separating what I wanted into categories and letting each category burn to together.
When I was finished I thanked God for what I had already. Then I made sure that there were no sparks in the ashes by running water on them before I threw them out.
Also, you might want to open a window as it can get smoky.
I have great fun doing this ritual.
To everyone out there, have a great holiday.
Peace,

Hi Robert,
this is slighty offtopic.
Today i was studying a bit the saturn-uranos cycles, and I got to some peculiar and interesting conclusions!
I clearly see that this cycle correlates well to society changes between Uranian and Saturnine trends, between radical change and maintaining of old structures and economy
WAtch how these cycles with seed events starting during conjuntion, culminating in opposition and merging into next cycle again
O-opposition, s-squares, C-conjuntion
CYCLE1: main changes bringing the 20st century world order and start of technological age (civil war in US)
1853-C some wars leading to other future wars and first major technological advances
1864-s US civil war, railroads
1875-O new empires, pos civil war in US
1886-s after krakatoa eruption, technological advances
CYCLE2: big rearrangemnts on the world, leading to the big depression and world warII and globalism latter:
1897-C post economic depression in US, scientific advances
1909-s, no particular event ?
1920-O first world war, after russian revolution
1931-s the big depression
CYCLE3: from second world war, going to 60s and then latter significant progress in civil movements and URSS breakup
1942-C second world war
1953-s conservadorism, cold war, rock n roll
1965-O the 60s, vietnam war, going to the moon
1976-s oil shocks, some society movements
CYCLE4: now in globalized society, new issues arise, mainly trying to deal with global economy, nuclear energy and the notion of global powers
1987-C black monday stock crash, chernobil, events leading to USSR breakup
2001-s US Bush election, 911
2010-O, US 2008 election, possible economic and world changes? oil crashes? new energies?
2021-s
2032-C
Curiously, I also done this for the history of my country Portugal and I achieve to amazing conclusions, solely taking our most important historic events. I could even foretell that in 2010 or 2021 Europe may become a unified condeferation, observing how things progress here!

Hi robyn - It sure seems as though this Mars RX has brought more than one major car crash or near miss! It happened to me on Thanksgiving. I also will affirm that his insurance will pay for your loss. Glad you weren't hurt.
Hi dcu - Well, there were some interesting comments over at the common dreams thread on this topic. Best of luck to our Lakota brothers and sisters getting the government out and off their backs. Hopefully it won't wind up another Wounded Knee.
Hi Lori - I'll be composing articles on the Chinese Astrology of 2008 in January.
Hi Sunil - Thanks very much for your blessings and good wishes. May everyone who is part of this site's community have a much better 2008 than their 2006 or 2007!
Hi Helen - Great suggestions, especially making sure that what gets burned is ONLY what you want to catch fire! And yes, it does get smoky, especially when there are many pieces of paper to burn. Happy Holidays!
Hi Popplagid - Good research. I'll probably do an article on the Saturn-Uranus cycle in the future. They definitely do a dance showing us the changes between creative revolution and the existing societal structures that usually resist change. This of course applies to our individual lives as well.

Elizabeth, thats another very interesting piece of research. To my humble knowledge, little has been studied astrologically linking to the climate.
I can tell you that the presence of planets, namely outer planets, in constelations (sideral astrology), affects the weather. For example, next year we will have Saturn in sideral Leo and Jupiter in sideral Sagittarius as well as Pluto, although I dont claim that its better neither sideral or tropical, I think we can expect a more sunny and warm year than this last. But little is understood. One thing I have observed that is very clear: when moon transits in watery signs, it tends to rain more and the atmosphere is wetter, when in fire signs is much warmer and drier, in earthy the weather gets colder and in air signs the weather tends to be more changeable; at least most of the times and specially during extremes.
Particularly relevant for these astrological studies was the little ice age, during the XXVII to XIX centuries. The climate was particularly cold in 1650, 1770 and 1800, starting first in 1250, then during the famine of 1315 and setting down in 1550, and ending in 1850. Oreviously there was a hot period, called the medieval maximu, during 900-1300.
Curiously Pluto ingress in Aries tends to mark the start of novel climate periods, for instance, in 846 marking possibly the start of this period, later in 1090, marking the hottest part of the medieval high, in 1334 marking the erratic period and in 1579 around the start of the little ice age, these two a bit delayed. In 1823 it was the last ingress, curiously during the start of the hot weather again. Possibly these cycles are also linked to Saturn ones, for example Saturn ingressing in Aries marks usually periods of specific climate during last century, for instance, starting in the 1908, 1938, 1967, 1996 and the next one will be during 2026. Uranus was also in Aries in the late 20s also seems to mark the really starting upward trend in temperatures. Neptune was in Aries around (I dont have here my astrology software, so I did it by head!) 1380, 1520, 1690, 1860, 2020, which by the way none of these seemed cold periods.
But this, of course, urges a more detailed analysis and following of the cycles. I will do that latter on. Let us try to see which planets were in each sign, during the previous cold spells of the little ice age, and during the hot spells of last century and the medieval high. And interestingly, would be to see also when Krakatoa, the Tsunami and etc happened, what was there in the sky...
We can think that probably Mars has a hot influence over the climate, Saturn a cold stabilizying one (possibly associated with meterological highs), Uranus a cold stormy one, Neptune a wet and fresh, maybe floods and ocean changes, and Pluto possibly long trend changes.
Finally, I leave you with some curious material from these websites, enjoy: http://www.shotfreeinmontana.com/ss2001/21stcent.htm
http://www.guidingstar.com/NeptuneInAquarius.html
and my blog http://www.astrotransits.blogspot.com having the outer planet cycles
But certainly Uranus-Saturn, Saturn-Pluto and Pluto-Uranus all correlated to some of the most strong society changes, which will repeat again in just 2-4 years.

Dear Robert,
Happy Winter Solstice!
Something happened to me the 22nd, day of the Solstice, I met someone days before through the internet, there seemed to be something there and it's still feeling like there's something important. But yes, Venus square Neptune, and not only that, we've got Venus square Neptune in our composite chart, so it is something intangible. There is however a lot of energy coming back and forth, and a telepathic communication already established. Is it really very bad to have Venus square Neptune in the composite chart?

Hi Popplagid - Climate change will be one of the major areas of study in the future. Traditionally, the chart done for the beginning of a season showed the weather to follow. Of course, we have also contributed more to global warming in the past 20 years than all of human history combined, so it's an entirely different level of analysis. Resource shortages and mass migrations are definitely coming, as shown by the major Cardinal squares and oppositions over the next few years throwing the voids into Cancer.
Hi Alix - Squares are not necessarily bad. Venus square Neptune in the composite may lead to unrealistic idealism, or interactive releases of ideals. It can lead to confusion, but also a shift in how you both relate to money, resources, values and so forth. That square shows if you can find ways to demonstrate the significance of your internal challenges to your world, you can create new motifs of expression. This aspect leads to great insights into generic human illusions, and ideally leads us to adjust ourselves to more stable and realistic forms of interaction and cooperation. And of course it makes perfect sense that if you have a composite square that would show up in the chart for initiating the relationship, much like children having similar aspects to one or both parents.

Hi Robert, thanks for the insight. We are the both of us artists in a way, with pretty much the same aesthetic ideals, I felt that this can become an useful outlet for this energy. Venus receives a lot of support though, being conjunct Saturn in the MC, trine Jupiter, trine Moon, trine Mars and opposition to Sun. Sun trines Jupiter and moon, squares Neptune, opposes Saturn and Venus. I'd say that the trade mark of any sort of relationship that starts through the internet will be this Neptune/Venus connection, wouldn't you agree?

Hi Alix - Yes, in that the internet both helps us connect yet veils those who connect until they actually meet. Sort of like Venus emerging from out of the ethers.
