Astrology and Birth Skills - Are You An Initiator, Consolidator, or Distributor?
by Robert Wilkinson
In the Vedas, the Holy Books of India written in antiquity, it is said there are 3 gunas, or "tendencies." They are called Rajas, Tamas, and Sattvas, and manifest as modes or forces of operation. In Astrology, we know these forces as Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable signs, where each plays its part in initiating, stabilizing, or distributing energy. Today we explore how these relate to our charts.
These gunas, seen from an astrological angle, represent the 3-fold process by which everything is expressed. We all have all the signs in our charts, so we are all familiar in one way or another with these three energies expressed through the elements of inspiration, practicality, associations, and experiential awareness.
Today, for your renewed consideration, here's Astrology Charts and Division of Labor - Are You an Activator, Stabilizer, or Distributor? By understanding more about these modes of operation, we can come to understand how to be appropriate in any given circumstance we confront. Enjoy!

Hi Damien - Actually, we ARE all three, since we have all the signs in our charts. Our planets merely show the emphasis we cultivate naturally, while the progressions are how these evolve over time, and the transits show the challenges and opportunities we cultivate in the moment.

Hi Robert,
Which of these are I? I so often in my life have felt like the conduit ... or catalyst for others, bringing them new awareness and growth upon their path if they are receptive to learn, helping them to move forward. I think I've always been the channel in more ways than one.
Still busy working in my Legal job ... it's been 4.5 months and it's been an intense time.
Thanks,
Lori

Hi Robert,
I've been working hard in my Legal job since mid November ... in April Pluto goes retrograde in my 2nd house again ... Jupiter will also be retrograde in my 2nd house this year. What does that mean in a nutshell?
Thanks,
Lori

Hi Lori - You're all three. We ALL are catalysts and conduits for others, just as they are for us. You could not know or do what you do without having had others' assistance. It's part of the common human condition. As for long term transits and their possible effects in your chart, there are too many to list here.

Hi Robert, I have only two of my planets in the cardinal modalities, which are the moon and mercury both in my fifth house, and then I have six placements in fixed signs including ac and mc along with saturn, neptune, neptune, venus and jupiter, but also have six placements with mutable including chiron and true node as well as my sun, pluto, mars and uranus. I am not considered much of an initiator. But I do tend to be the person to give ideas and start projects....and can keep things going and will not give up unless other people give up on me first. I think because of my mutability I have had a hard time staying focused (i was a typical adhd kid and it took a long time for me to learn how to become organized and stick to things). I now see how my astro chart has helped me. I was not born with these skills. I had to learn them and earn them.
I still hate being organized and I abhor routine. But I can better handle it and I know that I need balance.

Hi Micheline - Your initiative comes out when you feel ideas that can be creatively or spontaneously expressed. Your Mutability is heavily Virgo, which is utilitarian and serviceable. We all learn through progressions and transits skills not accented in our natal traits.
