Over the years many have asked me what Mercury retrograde is good for. We know it's supposedly NOT a good time to sign contracts, or make purchases of electronics or major moves or decisions. We are told to hang out with the energies, seeing that things may not be as they appear, and so on. That said, there is much that a Mercury retrograde period is good for, such as traveling, research, and other important things.
I have found that as long as one is flexible, retrograde travel is actually a good thing. So is research, reflection, review, rehearsals, and returns from the past. It's also a great time for reconnecting with old friends, finding people and things thought lost.
It's a great time to explore possibilities, as long as no definitive decisions are made and options kept open, since they are usually modified or reversed later on. It's also a good time for doing things left undone or neglected from previous times.
It's good for resuming something from the past, as long as you remember that it may not look like it used to, or requires a different approach than before. It's also excellent for getting new information and perspective that fills in gaps in understanding or activity, and doing things that seem to go in one direction but lead us to entirely new information and understanding.
We can safely resume things begun in previous retrograde periods, or pick up threads we once set aside while other things developed. It's an energy that favors building in a time lag in judging or evaluating whatever you're doing, since retrogrades often show that there are things yet to develop that will ultimately fill in whatever is missing in the present.
So what can we expect from Mercury retrograde in Virgo? Besides making the house it's retrograding through feel more Mercurial, and giving a different atmosphere to anything we have in Gemini, as well as reinforcing our Virgo energies (due to Mercury ruling Virgo), today I'll offer you a bit from my book, "A New Look At Mercury Retrograde," from the chapter on Mercury retrograde in the signs. Here's some of what I wrote about Mercury retrograde in Virgo:
The mind here becomes a critic of all it sees, and judges the practical usefulness of every idea and every approach.... This position continually analyzes place and function using check lists, and reviews everything to evaluate its perfection.
This is the servant seeing what another needs to hear, or heal.... There may be vacillation about forms of perfection, or a critical unconscious intolerance. This position categorizes things in an unusual way, which may result in a filing system that is perfectly ordered, but makes no sense to anyone else.
Mercury in Virgo is in its own 1st sign. Here discrimination is the quality fo the mind, and differentiation the source of self-identity. Here the mind adjusts to a more proper conception of self within any process.
It is also in its own 4th sign, offering "practical application as the grounding, taproot, or platform of ideas. Here the mind's base of operation is how it discerns and compartmentalizes." When retrograde in Virgo, the mind multiplies, analyzes, and figures out what fits where in the bigger picture, as well as how ideas were applied in the past, while staying aware of differences and similarities.
Knowledge comes from the adjustments that lead to order, or "the work" being furthered. Knowledge also comes from seeing the place and function of any given idea or piece of information.
When retrograde in Virgo, Mercury transits through a sign it rules. This makes it function naturally, if critically. It may be a time to re-evaluate recent criticisms, or worries, and get a new perspective about how your health or the health of another may have factored into the concerns.
Breathe into taking a new look at what needs adjusting or correcting. Find a new way to understand recent information or developments forcing practical adjustments, and find ways to tweak how you coordinate the details of your life.
This period gives us a front end look at what will be illuminated from the last 3 days of August through during the first 11 days of September. Take a look back on developments occurring between mid-June and the end of July to see what Mars and then Venus brought forth to get a new understanding of those events. We shall understand more by the end of September.
That brings us back to something I said earlier: Hang out with the energies and information, pay attention to details while remembering that a lot of it won't make sense for several weeks, and don't believe everything you're told. It will be a great time to see how things fit together, get a new look at what to adjust and how to adjust it, and get a new understanding of the Saturn in Virgo lessons mentioned in previous Mercury retrograde in Virgo articles on this site.
