Each Mercury Retrograde period is unique, yet related to other Mercury RX periods, usually because the signs are harmonized with those of past Mercury retrogrades. This one is entirely in the Fire sign of Aries. What does this mean for all of us?
This Mercury retrograde starts at 1:48 pm PDT March 30, 4:48 pm EDT and 9:48 pm Greenwich (Mar 31 in Iran, Afghanistan, and points east.) This retrograde moves from 25 Aries back to 13 Aries, with the inferior conjunction of Mercury and the Sun occurring at 20 Aries at 12:37 pm PDT April 9, 8:37 pm Greenwich.
We finished a sequence of Mercury retrograde periods in 2010 where the retrograde span was entirely in Earth signs. In the last one in December, Mercury moved from Capricorn back to Sagittarius. This one is entirely in Aries, a Fire sign. In Aries we claim personal power to initiate new life directions from the endings of Pisces to make these new initiatives real in Taurus.
As this one retrogrades back through Aries, we'll get to research, re-think, rehearse and get a new look at recent beginnings that will show us how our "inner and outer elements of being" are cooperating, leading us back to a view of a new identity that's already been revealed but we may not be seeing it as yet. This should show us how we've adopted a new sense of responsibility to ourselves or society.
This Mercury retrograde begins at 25 Aries, and retraces ground we experienced March 16 through March 30. The degree is "A double promise." Rudhyar says this symbolizes a probationary stage, where we must learn to shape our minds in a form that can accept a potential future fulfillment. It is a degree of "revelation of new potentialities," and a "guarantee that (we) can operate successfully at two levels of consciousness," if we have been open, ready, willing, and able to shape our "translucent mind in the form revealing spiritual fulfillment."
We are told that this symbolizes an implied message of faith, where we can "truly experience what (we) deeply believe (we) can experience." He says this "announces the possibility of a new step in evolution," but it is a promise rather than an actuality. In the original notes on the symbols, he states this degree is a "fortuitous cooperation between inner and outer elements of being," and "a sense of responsibility to self or to society."
He says it falls in the span of "Examination," and it's the final degree of the emotional-cultural level of the scene of Potency in the Act of Differentiation. So we'll use our Mercury function to examine our potency involving feelings and our social existence so we can differentiate whatever has been individualized before now.
This is a threshold point where we take a look back at whatever in the past has recently begun, and re-shape our mind, perceptions, and expectations as a result of a new sense of responsibility. These reviews and new points of view will be activated as the other inner planets roll across this degree between mid-April and mid-May.
According to Dr. Jones, creator of the Sabian Symbols, the keyword is SENSIBILITY. He states this is a degree of resourcefulness, where "for each potentiality that life may offer (us) there are alternatives of equal or supplementary value which (we) are able to recognize." He says this degree is "unlimited capacity for seeing the world and self both inwardly and outwardly, and when positive, "a facility of adjustment by which everything in a given situation may be brought into the fullest co-operation with everything else."
So we enter a time of reviewing our resourcefulness, our expectations, and willingness to shape our perceptions to attract future fulfillment. Here we review a recent entry into social-cultural potency and can see how the inner and the outer are cooperating to bring forth a new way of coordinating our affairs steering us toward our natural better self.
Many could find information or mental impressions showing new responsibilities, new potentials, and new ways to adjust to bring things into a smoother cooperation wherever late Aries falls in the chart. These can also work out through the houses with Gemini and Virgo on the cusp.
Expect a profusion of ideas, communications, insights and evaluations that will take many twists and turns before becoming clear visions of how to decide and what to do. By the time this RX period is done, we'll know what's being finished or is done so that we can find social or emotional power moving forward.
Of note is that this Mercury retrograde period begins with Mercury retrograding back toward a second conjunction with Jupiter, along with Mercury having been septile Venus and Chiron for several days. Taken together it indicates that recent turning points in our lives in the realms ruled by Mercury and Venus will yield new insights and opportunities related to what "cosmic order" we glimpsed in mid-March.
This retrograde period will help us reorganize our lives through reflecting and reviewing recent important choices related to forks in the road of our life related to our interactions, even if they made no sense why they were happening.
Through the dynamic actions set into motion before this retrograde began, we shall see turning points in everyone's destiny radically precipitated over the next few weeks, especially since the zone between 18-22 Aries triggers the Grand Irrationality. I discussed this very powerful series in the article, Astrology in March, April, and May of 2011 - Mercury and the Other Planets Activating the Grand Irrationality.
Related events marking these changes will come on strong and frequently over the next few weeks. The hot zones will begin April 6, and last through the end of the month. We will eventually see what it was all about between May 5-9. Obviously the Moon will play a part each time it transits the 7 zones of the Grand Irrationality, which I'll give you in an article coming soon.
Notable aspects Mercury makes during this RX period feature the conjunction with Jupiter and the Sun while opposition Saturn, and a septile to Neptune and biseptile to Pluto, discussed in the previous paragraph. This will bring us new insights into the polarization between Jupiter and Saturn in our lives and world. Go with the Jupiter as expressed through Saturn's balanced maturity and structure, and take a new look at how you can break free of narrow thinking and interpretations while cultivating spiritual rapport with others.
That means this Mercury retrograde period will heavily activate both the recent Full Moon influence, as well as the Sun specifically. Prepare for an acceleration of things "falling apart," where we get the seeds while watching the form of the old fall away. We shall see how the whole relates to the parts, and find a larger vision of the end of processes.
As Jupiter rules Mars' sign, Jupiter will be a major player over the next few weeks in how things get set into motion, as well as indicate its long wave trajectory. Jupiter indicates we can all glimpse "fulfilling acts of self realization," and find a greater work to do in line with our most authentic individual self.
All the planets are clustered within the span of early Capricorn through late Aries except for outlier Saturn in Libra. As this chart is remarkably similar to the chart for the Vernal, or Spring Equinox, please check out that article to find out more about how Saturn works as a nozzle, or handle, for all the other planetary energies at this time. By the end of this period, all the planets will be within a fairly narrow clustering, showing a great fusion of energies that will rapidly expand in May after they all form conjunctions.
Mercury retrograde is good for reworking, rehearsing, rethinking, researching, or finding a different approach to whatever is not well understood. It's also great for busting lies and misconceptions, though if you have the misfortune of dealing with someone operating from a delusion, they still may not get what's right in front of their face. In that case, let them go and apply your energies to more worthy relationships and endeavors.
Regarding The Grand Irrationality - this is a huge ongoing influence that symbolizes why our world is spinning in some very weird ways. It shows a long wave period where obsessive-compulsive behaviors are in the air, irrationality pervades the atmosphere, and why humanity is at a major fork in the road of our individual and collective destiny.
So during the next few weeks as the inner planets all roll into Aries and begin the string of conjunctions, turn from the past to the future, see what authentic "best self" you can bring forth in direct actions, and after you do your research, rehearsals, and reviews, "just do it!" The Grand Irrationality is again in major motion, so these next few weeks are very important in shaping all our futures in extraordinary ways cutting us loose from the past.
On a final note for today, during any Mercury retrograde period there are always strange twists and turns and returns. However, if it's not a return of something you should have taken care of before then, remember that whatever happens it probably won't turn out the way it seems at the time.
Obviously there are more Mercury retrograde articles coming in the near future. Other parts in this series will discuss aspects and configurations with other planets, the nature of its coming stationary direct degree influences, how it affects individual birthdays, the coming Inferior Conjunction, and what this Mercury Retrograde in Aries is specifically good for.
