Mercury goes retrograde at 20 Pisces on Feb 23, 1:41 am PST, 4:41 EST, 9:41 am Greenwich. Over the next few days we'll examine more about the meaning of this phenomenon and how we can make best use of these recurring periods, as well as what this specific retrograde period is good for.
In 2012, Mercury went retrograde 3 times, unlike 2011 when we had a 4th Mercury retrograde period, making it an unusual year. When Mercury is retrograde, it seems to throw people and situations into a whirlwind of over, under, sideways and down. But does it really? Just what is Mercury retrograde? In the next few weeks we'll discover many things about how Mercury Retrograde in Pisces affects us.
Mercury retrograde is one of the most misunderstood parts of astrology. Many have heard about it, but don't know what it really is. I gave you an introduction about the general meaning of the phenomenon known as Mercury Retrograde in the article, Mercury Retrograde - A Repeat Look at the Guide of Souls. Hopefully, it opened a view that is helpful in piercing through many of the superstitions and suppositions concerning this repeating phenomenon, and how it works in our lives.
There's too much to recap here, so if you're not familiar with the technical elements and basic meanings of this Mercurial phenomenon happening 3 times a year, please read that article so you can understand better what this coming period is about, and how best to approach its challenges and potentialities.
I'll be composing more about what the coming retrograde period is about in future articles. For now, I'll just mention that we'll get new insights about how we are or have been nourished at “the end of the day,” and be “gathering our medicine” among those with whom we belong because they are part of our spiritual web of life.
The Grand Irrationality is in full swing, thanks to the Moon in the Leo zone. This adds a third focal point to how all the other planetary energies are being expressed, along with Jupiter and Saturn alternating as nozzles and handles as the dual “Bucket” focal determinators. Destiny is on the move, and there will be confrontations between points of view that show us how to admire the best in each rather than get caught in limited conditional responses.
We'll get new insights into our motives, subconsciousness, unconscious mind, and the universal human condition with its faith and sorrows wherever late Pisces falls in our charts. By the end of the process we’ll know why we had to eliminate some things, purify some things, reject some things, accept some things, and achieve closure in an important part of our past. This should lead us to find a newer, broader, and more compassionate view that helps us say goodbye and bless the passages that we’re going through. This will lead us to a new dedication by mid-March.
Since Mercury is now ahead of both the Sun and Venus, but will wind up behind both at the end of this retrograde period, when this period is over we will have insights, reflections, and new understanding about what has been activated during the time Mars moved between 6-20 Pisces from Feb 7-26, and is illuminated as the Sun moves through 6-20 Pisces from February 23-March 9. After that, these Pisces elements we’re exploring from multiple angles will be captured and/or valued when Venus moves through this span from March 1-13.
So Mars initiated our Pisces experience this year, and then we had Mercury direct exploring what Mars initiated. Now Mercury gets to review and reflect as the Sun and Venus vitalize and capture elements of that 2013 Pisces experience so that when Mercury finally goes direct on March 17 at 6 Pisces, we’ll see clearly what has ended or needs to end so we can embrace a new dedication.
Some of what we’ll understand through review, reflection, and roundabout signals will become clear when Mercury goes direct, since it makes a very powerful water trine with Saturn throughout March. And even more will become clear beginning this Summer, when Jupiter and then Mars move through early Cancer and form a Grand Water Trine with Mercury’s stationary direct degree which will have been occupied by Neptune in May, June, and the first half of July.
In short, what we’re feeling and glimpsing in mid-March shows us where the collective consciousness will be at beginning Spring 2013 lasting into 2015. And as Jupiter moves into the heart of Cancer, it will go stationary retrograde almost exactly trine Mercury’s stationary rx point. Welcome to a new world of emotional understanding and harmony wherever you have Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces in your chart!
As an aside for students of the craft, it is worth noting that Jupiter went stationary direct at 6 Cancer in March 2002, and Uranus went stationary retrograde at 19 Pisces in June 2007. Uranus also went stationary direct at 19 Pisces in November 2008, Chiron went stationary retrograde at 6 Pisces in June 2011, and then went direct at 5 Pisces November 2012. All of these stationary triggers will have some impact on what is remembered, reflected on, or reviewed over the next three weeks and moves forward the last half of March and first half of April.
So we’ll all be reviewing Piscean things in our lives. Keep an eye to the house where this retrograde falls since that's where returns, reviews, new insights, and new understanding of past things will be found. More on that to come in another article.
Pisces is the sign of a vaster compassionate view of the common elements of our feeling experience as humans. It is the sign of the collective consciousness, our personal unconscious and motives, the movie of our life, and the house of “self-undoing” and sorrow. Here we get to review recent Piscean experiences and developments in our lives, and will have a chance to re-examine some things that will show us a new consecration, a new dedication, a new set of collective values we’ll be called to defend, or a testing that shows us how committed we are to higher goals after mid-March.
Mercury retrograde can bring the return of old memories, old connections, old ways of doing our Being, and old friends and ideas. In Pisces it could lead us to memories of past people and behaviors so that we can now say goodbye to those ghosts forever. We may see rewards at the end of a cycle of effort, or perhaps how we’ve been protected as we navigated our way through difficult feelings. We may get glimpses of how the present is the result of old karmas of omission and commission, and find ways to forgive ourselves and others for those karmic tendencies.
Sometimes a retrograde indicates a period of returns and/or rediscoveries; other times it's a period of looking back to change some things so that we can "get it right" when Mercury again goes direct. In any case, we can understand the challenges and opportunities by looking at the sign(s) and house(s) where the retrograde is happening.
This Mercury retrograde features aspects indicating a mix of energies that are both productive and frictional. There are major cross currents during this stationary retrograde time, so try to remember to adapt to the tides rather than fight them.
As I mentioned in an earlier article, there are two major non-rational configurations set into motion during this Mercury retrograde period involving the Moon, Neptune, and Pluto triggering the Grand Irrationality, along with Jupiter triseptile Saturn setting a different group of degrees into play. With these powerful aspects of a non-rational, obsessive-compulsive nature that this will be one of the more important Mercury retrogrades we’ve had! Please refer to first of the linked articles below, since it explains a lot more about this most important time.
Throughout the retrograde period, we'll get many insights, returns, and renewals. Mercury retrograde is always good for looking back to see what we didn't in earlier times. However, also remember that there also may be delays, misunderstandings can occur and/or be resolved, and that much may come in roundabout or even apparently contradictory ways.
So the coming weeks will give us a new look at recent Pisces developments, as well as herald important developments that have already been set into motion and will be powered up between the end of February and mid-March. And I’ll remind you that since this retrograde is in Pisces, take a look back at events and truths offered when Jupiter was in this span between February and April 2010, since that launched these Pisces energies in our charts. We’ll now get flashbacks or insights into that Jupiter in Pisces experience.
Keep following through on keeping things on tracks and continue adjusting to the different pace symbolized by Mercury slowing down very quickly during this time. Get ready to take an unusual view, do your research, rehearsals, and examine peripherals since they may be more important than we initially thought. More on all of this, plus how it affects individual signs, in future articles.
