This Mercury retrograde starts 9pm PDT October 11 (October 12 EST and points east) and ends 4pm PDT Nov 1 (Nov 2 UK and points east). This retrograde moves from 10 degrees Scorpio back to 24 Libra, with the inferior conjunction OF Mercury and the Sun occurring 5 pm PDT October 23 (October 24 W. Africa and east) at 1 Scorpio. This degree is said to be "Sightseers In A Bus Strain To See Crowds and Buildings," symbolizing an "appetite for larger things" and "seeing life as a whole." A degree of "Social Intercourse," Rudhyar also says this degree is "...human eagerness to expand one's social horizon and to experience the results of ... new ways of life," referring to a greater realization of "a larger whole of existence- a more encompassing frame of reference," and "a widening of experience."
The inferior conjunction is when Mercury (mind) conjuncts the Sun (life) while retrograde, indicating that signals, messages, and ideas from either outer sources or subconscious sources will fuse with the life principle, setting the tone for the lessons involving how our minds are relating to our lives during the next four months. Since Mercury is retrograde, the degree of the inferior conjunction shows how our lives will merge with our perceptions and bring forth a new understanding of our light.
This is the second step in a two-conjunction process. The first step is when Mercury conjuncts the Sun in forward motion after its retrograde period. As Mercury is faster than the Sun, after this Mind again outraces Life, and explores ideas and perceptions of experiences yet to occur.
Then Mercury goes stationary retrograde, and moves into the second step when Mercury again conjuncts the Sun while retrograde. This is when Mind is being absorbed by Life, or Life takes on the results of subconscious or collective ideas returning to source. Eventually Life gets as far from Mind as it can, Mercury goes stationary direct, and begins to speed up preparing for the first step anew in a different part of the zodiac.
We are told that the first degree of Scorpio is an opening to a greater COMMUNION on the Actional level of experience, where new feelings and new awarenesses arise as a result of our desire to deepen our connectedness with life and others. This Inferior Conjunction of mind "looking back" into life will help us reinterpret experiences we've had which deepened us but we may not have noticed up to now.
The fact that the Inferior Conjunction falls with the Moon at 30 Pisces, the degree of Archetypalization, indicates this will show us a new look at the wider dream we've been moving into since Spring 2007 when Mars crossed that point, activating whatever next phase of our life adventure we dared to dream. Now we can reflect, and nurture the parts of the dream in the future toward fulfillment.
This is aided by Mars, ruling Scorpio, being the backdrop of the event. It's at 10 Cancer, said to be a degree of "spiritual fulfillment," "the acme of civilized living," and "actualization of potentialities and outpressing of real selfhood." The period in front of us will be excellent in many ways if we express our Higher Self through deepened feelings and connectedness with others.
During the 11 days before the inferior conjunction (fusion) of mind and life, take a new look at how you can bring out your inner wisdom by adjusting to a future vision or broader perspective that's opening for you, and get a new point of view regarding what your imagination is willing to consider and how to coordinate your life to reorganize it productively. It's great for intuitive flashes, insights into the larger collective consciousness and unconsciousness, and you should find a new ease and sophistication among those you're with.
This retrograde beginning at 10 Scorpio retraces ground we covered September 21-October 11, and is a degree of emergence of group "personalities," where activity done together builds group consciousness and connectedness. It is a degree of "comradeship," fellowship, and "an effective channeling of personal aspirations into the commonplace grooves of a shared experience." It is the culminating degree in the Emotional-Social-Cultural level of "Communion" and according to Jones, its formula is Sustaining, Ideal, Universal, Specializing, Social, and Inspired.
This picks up where the Mercury Stationary Direct point of November 2006 left off, leading to the feelings by Spring 2007 of a greater connection with others to the extent that we roused ourselves to participate in some new or different activities. We were given a new way to look at or position ourselves within the irrationality of Autumn 2007 created by the Sun, Venus, and Mars transiting the Scorpio Grand Irrationality point at the same time as Mercury's station.
At that time Mercury was not in the Grand Irrationality pattern, but its current station at 10 Scorpio puts it biseptile Neptune's stationary RX point of Spring. This stationary point is within the "hot zone" created then that will be triggered continuously by Neptune and Pluto throughout 2008-2009 as they respectively biseptile and septile this Scorpio point.
This would indicate that whatever "threshold" lessons, ideas, and perceptions this Scorpio-Libra retrograde holds for us will help us move into our Higher Destiny the next two years each time the Grand Irrationality pattern is triggered by transits, including the Moon. Expect to broaden and deepen your experience of life through a wider exposure to other people and interactive possibilties. For many, it "won't be Kansas anymore."
Please read more about The Grand Irrationality and Jupiter Biseptile Saturn - Why Things Are So Strange Right Now for Everyone to learn more about the weird larger atmosphere that is affecting all of us until early November. Due to the Mercury stationary point echoing and anticipating the larger irrationality pattern approaching this zone, expect things to get somewhat weird. During the retrograde, while there are always strange twists and turns and returns, if it's not a return of something you should have taken care of before then, remember that whatever happens, it probably won't turn out the way it seems at the time.
Being trine the retrograde point of the last Mercury retrograde in June, it is the natural understanding of what new realms we entered at that time where we had to prove our worth and capabilities. Of special note is that this retrograde point falls close to a trine where Mars will go stationary retrograde on November 15, 2007, just as the last one fell close to Mars' exact stationary retrograde point. Thus many of the signs, signals, and information we got in June and July will factor importantly in whatever we'll be re-doing, undoing, or preparing to do between November 2007 and April 2008.
In a curious echo of the Summer Mercury Retrograde station, this retrograde Mercury starts off completely unafflicted, a rare occurrence. Though in a semisquare to Pluto, it retrogrades back to a septile as it passes the earliest degrees of Scorpio, thus triggering the Grand Irrationality mentioned earlier.
While not an affliction, it promises to remind us there are certain "forks in the road of destiny" we may have postponed but cannot postpone much longer. Take a new look at the choices and changes presented back in late September at the first crossing of the Scorpio zone so you may better understand what to do or not do just before and after the Inferior Conjunction, preparing to cut loose the second week of November.
Mercury retrogrades through a sextile with Venus and Saturn, a trine to Mars, and a novile with Jupiter during the first week of its RX. Then around the time it semisquares Jupiter it biseptiles Neptune and septiles Pluto, triggering the Grand Irrationality. As the Moon is conjunct Neptune, septile Pluto, and biseptile Mercury, expect this energy to be the focus of that weekend. Of note is the following weekend the Moon will trigger the Gemini zone just as the Sun passes through the Scorpio zone, setting 4 points of the 7 pointed Star into dynamic vibration. Expect those weekends to be very important in terms of information showing choices that should have been made or will need to be made.
Mercury toward the end of its RX period is in late Libra, said to be a decan of "expiation," so expect some major dues paying in our past to be rewarded in our present. Mercury is favorable to Pluto and Jupiter at the end of October and beginning of November, as well as Venus and Uranus. It hits its stationary direct point semisquare Saturn, showing a point of critical emergence in a larger process.
The novile to Jupiter will yield realizations at the end of the Mercury-Jupiter cycle begun December 2006, while all the septile series aspects will show us at multiple forks in the road of destiny, depending on what we learned, interpreted, or acted upon in late September and early October when Mercury septiled Pluto and biseptiled Neptune the first time in this sequence. All septiles are associated with irrationality, compulsive actions, and hard-edged changes, whether for good or bad.
This is a payoff period where things should get much clearer about where you're going and who you're going with. As I told you in the last Mercury retrograde period, "Though it may take until October when Mars transits this Cancer zone to see clearly where it's all going, be thoughtful where your mind and perceptions are leading you in early July." Welcome to the harvest time.
Also, the last Mercury RX there was a Mercury semisquare Saturn, but waning and closing the old cycle rather than now, when it's waxing and opening a new one. When Mercury semisquares Saturn, don't let narrow or pessimistic thinking hinder the process that's unfolding. The best way to handle these energies is to study, learn, communicate, and cultivate your spiritual rapport with others. Don't just withdraw if your ideas are challenged, but be willing to learn how to express your feelings productively and creatively.
While Mercury is in Scorpio many will find their ideas and feelings are mixed together and hard to separate from each other. Cultivate the penetrating mind through concentration as well as regenerative deep emotions, and feel in order to see what is needed to coordinate situations.
The Mercury semisquare Saturn will most affect those with planets around 22, 23, and 24 degrees of Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn, as well as 6, 7, and 8 Gemini, Virgo, Sag, and Pisces. This would impact birthdays around late November, mid-January, late February, mid-April, late May, mid-July, late August, and mid-October. If your birthday falls in these spans, lighten up, strive for optimism, cultivate an attitude of welcoming opportunities to study and learn, open your perspective to be more inclusive than exclusive, and let go of unnecessarily restrictive rules and assumptions.
Just as Mercury goes retrograde it is trine Uranus, re-echoing the lessons learned since the last Mercury retrograde which was also trine Uranus, just as the one previous to that was conjunct Uranus. It's been a powerful influence in this period, and the coming weeks offer the next step in understanding the harmony of the larger Mercury process as it progresses between retrograde periods. The Sun trine Uranus close to Mercury's stationary degree will bring a form of light, life, and power through illuminating whatever the stationary retrograde point is about.
Other elements of note during this retrograde is that Mercury disposits Venus and Saturn, but its influence on the Sun is very indirect. It directly influences our Taurus, Libra, Capricorn, and Aquarius houses and planets. Of especial note is that it is in sextile and septile for most of the period with Saturn, which it disposits, a very powerful and productive influence. We get to "look back" to the semisquare, before moving forward in November in the tird of a series of very productive aspects.
It's also in trine to Mars until its forward station biseptile that planet showing a similar energy, as the above process with Saturn, except take the internal crisis of the semisquare and substitute the concept of the fork in the road of the biseptile. So Mercury goes backward in reflective mode through the understanding and serendipitous interactivity of the trine and tredecile back to the biseptile to Mars, where it turns direct trining Neptune and sextile Pluto. This offers us an easy and obvious choice through understanding fundamental patterns where we see clearly the seeds, the needs, and what has to be done to launch some new life pattern in March 2008.
Remembering that nothing turns out as expected during a Mercury retrograde, and that things take strange twists and turns and there are curious returns of people, ideas, and experiences in new forms that resemble old forms, open to useful but overlooked angles of viewing things, learn and teach through a sense of perspective of how past and present relate in unusual ways, and be alert to roundabout or indirect communications that show things going on below the surface.
All in all, given the lack of volatile aspects between Mercury and the other planets, there shouldn't be too much upheaval or upset. It's more a time of getting closer to many things, people, and experiences, integrating, harmonizing and deepening the magnetisms begun in the new Saturn in Virgo era.
Mercury going stationary direct at 24 Libra on November 1-2 shows that through Jan 28, 2008, we will go through a "spiritual mutation," expanding spiritually while growing a metaphoric "left wing" showing a heart strength and potential for new forms of self expression and new opportunities to be grasped.
Try to be joyous as you do forms of symbolic "repair work" on the emotional, social, or cultural level in the months to come. We can all find new strengths in exploring new ways to respond to the challenges and enjoyments in front of us. It's a technique that can evolve out of our re-energizing contacts with nature we've cultivated, so check out the strengths at your disposal and use them wisely, rhythmically, and in proportion to the requirements of the larger process.
We'll wind up with a new ideal, new ways of relating to others, new people to relate to, a new sense of balance and proportion in our lives as a result of this period. This initiates a time of regenerating, reversing magnetism in some areas while attracting what we need in other. Drop obsolete ideas and views, as well as interpretations and how you communicate. This time will help us review why we have had to purify and concentrate recently, and will cement our ability to make this a more enduring part of our lives.
When Mercury goes direct, it is at a platform from which to bring the lessons it has reflected on during the rx period forward into the future life-in-the-making. The angle of retrograde exploration was the stationary retrograde degree. The degree of the inferior conjunction shows how life and mind must come together in a different, perhaps overlooked but definitely useful, view of what must be known.
The entire retrograde function is inward-turned, so we can get insights into what must be known to understand some thing from a more holistic point of view. We can also note how our mind, ideas, or worldview are affected by our subconsciousness, or our receptivity to others' subconsciousness.
Mercury retrograde periods reveal their own unique rhythm in offering us a new look at things. Every period in some way echoes the messages of prior retrograde periods, and affects those to come. That's why it's important to observe what has been revealed during other periods in the recent months and years past, so that you can see how Mercury, or Hermes, the "Guide of Souls," is leading you to your authentic self. Regardless of appearances, or how difficult or easy, Mercury retrograde periods show us the path to our Soul.

Hi Robert.
"Mercury toward the end of its RX period is in late Libra, said to be a decan of "expiation," so expect some major dues paying in our past to be rewarded in our present".
EXPIATION sounds like a "bad past actions' punishment or denial". But then comes the term REWARDED.
By that you mean is a reward according to some good/bad actions, without a concrete polarization on errors or good shots?. Just a verbal polarity I want to clarify.

Hi Henry - While "expiation" often means atonement, if we remove the emotion I see that as paying one's dues to the point of satisfying whatever requirement is perceived. From the Latin "completely propitiate," and "appease" (derived from faithful, loyal, devout) I've pondered the meaning of this stretch of reality for a long time, given what spans are on either side of the last decan of Libra. I think there are rewards in life for having done what was required of us to balance the scales on whatever level we must at the right time before entering into the magnetism of the Scorpio zone. Of course some will go through forms of atonement of whatever Karma dictates. There are some spans which are good for shedding old skins easily, gracefully, and elegantly.

OK, thanks Robert.
This is, as always, a wonderful post but there are so many actors at play right now that every point should be correctly understood.
Thanks anew.

Hi Robert,
Here I am with Mercury about to go Rx and re - thinking. I learned in my years of working as a Customer Service Representative, that so often one has to "re invent self" each day ... as each person, lesson and situation that comes up is different. That applied especially working in call centers.
Must be my Jupiter in Libra natally eh?
I continue to keep good thoughts to find the best employment since I was laid off. The company that I worked for does marketing for Mortgage Companies.
I learned as a child with the horses - "When ya fall off the horse you have to get right back up in the saddle and keep going". Literally and symbolically.
This is off the topic, but in November progressed transiting Jupiter enters my 2nd house. I hope it's got positive aspects to it.
My progessions report says:
Jupiter is in the 2nd: 11/17/07, Moving Forwards at Degree 0 in a 34 Degree House
Jupiter is in the 2nd house now, increasing opportunities to expand income and material
possessions. Career or investment interests may pay off handsomely, but overspending
is a pitfall.
No worry about over spending ... there I tend to be the frugal "plan and think ahead" type when it comes to money.
Life I have learned is to live/thrive with passion and joy and not the "nose to the grindstone, exist and survive, worry, barely head above water" that I have done so many times. "To make peace with money and self worth". The 2nd house has often been a teacher to me over the years.
It is my Mars and Mercury in Virgo I guess ... I tend to "get myself organized and then go and do it."
I just wondered if Jupiter will be in good aspect when it goes into the 2nd? My solar return also has alot of 2nd and 8th house planets this time around.
Mars will be retrograde in the 8th but my natal Mars has good aspects to it. It's Mercury that has issues.
Lessons, lessons. : ) I have alot of Chiron transits this month (age 50) that the report says are once every 50 year aspects. Chiron is in my 3rd house. I know that Chiron has to do with healing old stuff, blessing, transmuting, forgiving and releasing - even when you thought you already had.
Transits this month:
Chiron opposite Uranus
Chiron trine Jupiter
Chiron Sextile Saturn
Chiron square Venus
I've realized in looking back over my life, that two of my big lessons that have had a thread through my many experiences have been to "be at peace and friends with money and self worth" both. It must be part, too, of Saturn natally in the first house.
Amazing thing - the lessons of hind sight really are 20/20. What was not always clear becomes clear. We go through things and don't always see the thread of similarity that comes up again and again until awareness is attained :) Then I think ... what took me so long? LOL - it's like one of those moments when the fog lifts.
Next year my retrogrades are:
Mercury Stationary Retrograde 28 Jan 2008 in 03rd House
Pluto Stationary Retrograde 01 Apr 2008 in 02nd House
Saturn Stationary Retrograde 19 Dec 2007 in 10th House
Jupiter Stationary Retrograde 09 May 2008 in 02nd House
Neptune Stationary Retrograde 26 May 2008 in 03rd House
Mercury Stationary Retrograde 26 May 2008 in 07th House
Uranus Stationary Retrograde 26 Jun 2008 in 04th House
Mercury Stationary Retrograde 24 Sep 2008 in 11th House
Saturn Stationary Retrograde 31 Dec 2008 in 10th House
Thank you for agreeing to come back to this earth in this life, being willing to be the messenger and lift the fog for the rest of us.
I've so often tried to lift the fog for others ... so having you there is a blessing!! Self understanding is a wonderful gift.
With thanks,
Lori

Hi Robert,
My apology for these two long posts.
Right now I have transiting Mercury Conjunct Venus.
6th October 2007 to 18th November 2007. Also Mercury Squares Uranus - 8th October 2007 to 19th November 2007. Not sure of the houses, but just wondered if this is having an impact on my job search combined with Mercury rx coming up in the 12th house? I keep steady in my effort but not a whole lot of response lately. Otherwise okay.
October 20-22 I have Venus conjunct Mercury and Venus square Saturn October 17-19.
October according to the ex (astrologer) is also my "quiet time of the year". That may be why though I enjoy giving the kids Halloween candy I've never really been into Halloween all that much myself.
Interesting thing - in Denver and the mountains - every year practically like clock work - there is either already snow on the ground at Halloween or it snows that very night. It's like purification (layer of snow) mother nature style. Having lived up in the high country in the woods/wilderness (8400' elevation) for so many years ... it's a different lifestyle up there. It's where I am happiest, though inner happiness can be found anywhere.
I guess that is one of life's great lessons - to know that no matter where you are - or what you are doing - there can be a blessing - you can find something to be happy about.
There are no street lights at night up there in the mountains (always bright stars) and up in the forest - wild life ... so parents often will drive their kids from house to house for Halloween ... rather than walking from house to house as in the city. Since there are no lights at night but the stars, you would not want to trip over a log or who knows what. Moonlight in the forest is very pretty.
Houses are often tucked away in the pines but farther apart. It's a different world living in the forest. I feel blessed to have done it for 11 years. Even Christmas lights take on a different kind of charm up in the pines and snow. My spirit is happiest up there.
Not better or less ... it's just completely different than the city lifestyle. Some like it, some don't ... I love it and hope to return to it someday. For now the city.
I do my best to remain positive with the job search and know that "All that Is" up in the spiritual penthouse, has the over view of my growth and lessons. Being on street level I don't always see around the corner but follow inner guidance, knowing that the right employment can be just a few more steps around the corner. The past 2.5 years on my own after 26 years of not have had lots of self empowerment lessons ... I'm not the person I was back then.
I guess I am at a point in my growth now ... in that I can say that if I had to do it all again, I wouldn't change anything (good or not) because it's made me who I am as of today. I guess wisdom does come with turning 50. I just really came to this point today. Maybe it's Chiron.
When I am working again Robert I will send you a donation. Your efforts are always appreciated!! You're always there, you've helped me so much and I am thankful. This truly is a starting over year for me.
Thanks for being there! :) Astrology is wonderful, it so often makes sense the whys of life, when other things don't. I'm an amateur, not the professional that you are - but I learn all the time.
I hope your trip was great!!!

Hi ann - Well, stay open and I'm sure you'll find the best way to serve those who need your care. Sometimes we're out of sorts, other times we do better, so hang in there, but don't exhaust yourself achieving emotional fluidity in a disaster zone.
Hi Lori - Stay on top of the transits of the ruler of your 6th house, since that is connected to work done for others. You're restructuring your Mercury and Mars, which should be good in the long run. Transiting Mars RX in your 8th should show you how your internals are working with or against your desires.

Hi Robert,
I have a question concerning Mercury and Lilith, they are in conjonction right now, will Lilth be "taking away" some sort of communication, will she "cut" the "other" (Saturn + Venus + South Node) from our communication zone? Thanks Robert if you have some insights on this...
Posted by: Leana | October 11, 2007 at 07:48 AM
Hi Leana - Not sure how anything can "cut" our communication zone unless we permit it or it's no longer real. Knowing the real from the unreal can be known at any given moment, making it not necessarily an astrologically affected area of consciousness. As for Lilith, I know it to be an abstract point with a lot of supposition about its influence (mostly negative for some peculiar reason) but little to no real research done to verify or refine its supposed meanings. I would require a lot more critical analysis of possible manifestations before I'd go with the standard ones, which seem to lump a lot of stuff together which may or may not be accurate.
Posted by: Robert | October 15, 2007 at 11:55 AM
Thanks Robert!
"This time will help us review why we have had to purify...": Do we also get the help from the contact Saturn/South Node for a moment of completion and endings, and are we actively being given new reviewed information that will make more sense later? But still, is there some sort of "ending" at the final stage of this retrograde period?
I love the "left wing", "growing, and showing a heart strenght potential for new forms of self expression": It speeks so much to me! I am learning to forgive, forgive, forgive...and detach, detach, detach, from the outcomes, situations, relationships...
Thanks Robert for your wonderful articles!!!
Posted by: Leana | October 18, 2007 at 08:55 AM
Hi Leana - I observe that the Saturn-SN conjunction has brought up things and people from the past that are better observed following the line of least resistance, since it seems there's little to do but learn from these various events. Sort of like taking a look at certain assumptions, duties, and obligations accepted in the past but time to shed now. So far, it has appeared as echoes from the past while seeing what's not working in the present. The ending such as it is at any RX ending is one of going back as far as one needs to, and having retraced that ground there's a new "platform" of understanding enabling one to move forward with a different view. So I suppose the outcome is a heart's strength after being as practical as one can while shedding old chains and stones.

Hi Robert,
Just to make sure that there are no accidents in the universe, I have done some study on the "dark moon" Lilith. Lilith in a nutshell is the point of which a woman shows her strenght. (My is SURPRISE, SURPRISE, at 15 degrees Leo, conjuncting my Mercury in the 10th. Not a bad placement for a novelist/screenwriter,eh?
For a man, Lilith represents the kind of woman a man is afraid of and can send him over the edge into despair.
It is funny this topic should come up as I was going to ask what would be the effect of Lilith if I meet a man whose Lilith conjuncts my Pluto. My instincts tell me that this is going to be an intense, life changing affair. Also the effect of my Lilith on a man's sun when it conjuncts his sun. My feeling is that I become his "neck."
Your thoughts?
Peace,
Helen
Posted by: Helen | October 19, 2007 at 07:12 AM
Hi Helen - You raise interesting points about possible "meanings" of a very obscure part of Astrological lore. By now, I'm sure you know I don't ascribe as much power or influence to the "Dark Moon" as is written in the lore, mainly since it's an abstract point rather than a planetary body. That's also why I don't give that much overall power to the Arabian Parts, or even the Nodes, except within specific parameters that include the Moon and its transits. Also, perhaps even more importantly, I don't believe any astrological force is good for one gender and not another, or even any "cause" of fear, since fear is a pandemic human virus affecting all men and women until they embrace spiritual practices that move the consciousness beyond the sources of fear.
Any meeting between lovers can be an "intense, life changing affair," if one buys into the possibilities, so again, I don't necessarily attribute it to Lilith. Mercury can produce a passion of the meeting of the minds, Venus a passion for shared art and beauty, Mars a passion for intense activity for its own sake, and so forth. Even Saturn can produce a passion for experiences that move both into Dharma. We are as passionate as our Desire body allows us to feel, and we express it through the planetary energies. If Lilith has a "dark" influence, it truly resides only within ourselves. If it affects another, again, it truly resides only within ourselves. Therefore if we are light, it cannot be dark, and so MUST have a much different way of being interpreted than the lore offers.

Hi Robert.
I have successfully moved forward into my new home and it's great. thanks for your advice regarding this matter.
I'm finding this mercury retro quite difficult emotionally.
I wanted to ask you something regarding my personal relationships or the lack of them to be more precise.
I think I have changed alot about the way i live my life but still attract people who assume they can use me for there own ends.will this theme change?
is there someone coming into my life for the long term or am i being unrealistic? in addition i could do with some new friends too?
thanks for listening

Hi Hypnotic Poison - Congrats on the move. This Mercury RX is in Scorpio, but in the Grand Water Trine should be helping feelings flow and become clear. Re: the question, things change over time. Stop inviting them to hang out until you see them for who they are, and instead look at the larger patterns about why you attract who you do, and refuse those old patterns to the core of your being. You'll have a long term relationship when you're prepared and can recognize the beloved. As for new friends, welcome 50 who could show up, realize that only 5 might become regular acquaintances, and perhaps 2 might become good friends, which would be great.
