A Yod, or Finger of God, is a configuration involving two planets in sextile (60 degree) aspect, with a third at the inverse midpoint making a quincunx (150 degree) aspect to the two planets in sextile. So as you could surmise, every sextile creates a Yod void point. Right now, with Jupiter at 22 Capricorn and Uranus at 22 Pisces, the inverse midpoint falls at 22 Leo, a very significant point for millions all over the world.
In a Yod, or Finger of God, the planets in sextile form a strong productive base for growth in whatever directions and signs they fall. The present one favors expansive organization, discipline, or responsibility (Jupiter in Capricorn) in on going productivity with creative genius, renovations, or synthesized gifts and talents expressing universal feelings and experiences (Uranus in Pisces.) Where this sextile falls in our maps we are offered productive outlets for everything from organized genius to pragmatic intuitive synthesis.
Unexpected developments that abruptly shift directions, expanding one's organized base of growth into a greater truth, vision, or future, and flashes of intuitive global insights are all to be expected under this long term sextile. The aspect is exact as you read this article. It will be within range through mid-July, when it briefly slips into a wide but important quintile, offering gifts and specialized opportunities through September when it will again re-enter the sextile. It will be exact in November, and move into the "fated" septile in December 2008 through January 2009, offering major forks in the road of our life wherever early Aquarius and 19-21 Pisces falls in our charts.
Now for the Yod, or Finger of God, part of the equation. The inverse midpoint is very important as a focus point for the productive sextile enegies. However, since the quincunx is an aspect of "hard adjustment," the fact that there are two quincunxes gives rise to the meaning of the Yod, which is "expansion through sacrifice." Not just one sacrifice, but multiple sacrifices due to the two quincunxes. So it's a configuration of multiple sacrifices and adjustments squeezing out whatever isn't in the nature of the productivity and whatever cannot be contained in or focused through the nozzle planet.
The quincunx is also associated with health as well as elimination preparing for regeneration. Any point quincunx any other point symbolically forms either a 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th house relationship to whatever is being quincunxed. While we cannot go extensively into the nature of the many possible ways a quincunx could manifest, you can see that by the nature of the aspects involved a Yod, or Finger of God, would involve multiple adjustments and sacrifices leading to focused productivity and a measure of spiritual expansion directly related to what is eliminated from the life.
Since Jupiter and Uranus are in an exact sextile from 22 Cap to 22 Pisces, as I noted earlier it creats a Yod void point potential at 22 Leo. This degree, plus or minus 2 degrees for orb, is where Pluto was from late July 1951 through September 1953, and February through July 1954. All those born in this time span are finding their Plutos quincunxed by Jupiter and Uranus. Those born during this time should purify, get economical and focused in your use of heart energies, and cultivate the seeds of regenerating whatever Pluto heart fire is in your life, or needs to be in your life.
Neptune was in this degree span September 1923 through February 1924, July 1924-October 1924, January through August 1925, and April-May 1926. This generation are probably having to sacrifice some old indulgences to get spiritually focused, and are no doubt making long range personal adjustment in their ideals and ways of relating to collective consciousness.
Uranus was in this degree span September 1959 through January 1960, July-August 1960, and April-May 1961. With Uranus as a focal point, this group can expect creative heart revolution in their lives, with unexpected, weird, strange, different, unique, or highly unusual events to unlock their heart's creativity and genius. Synthesize what's in upheaval or new and different into a larger view while not getting deflected by unexpected storms.
Saturn was in this degree span October-November 1947, January-February 1948, June-July 1948, and August 1977 (though there are active degree points to either side of these spans.) These groups are having to adjust their security systems, sense of purpose, how and why they are or are not limited by certain things and people. Give up the need to fear, to control, to manipulate, or to cling to crystalized forms no longer adequate to the duties and responsibilities currently presenting themselves. Sacrifice old fears and control mechanisms and you'll get glimpses of Dharma which can help you grow into a greater purpose and "truth of being."
There are countless people with Jupiter, Mars, Venus, Mercury, Moon, or the Sun in the span of 20-24 Leo, so I'm not going to list them here. However, if you do have a planet in this span, expect multiple sacrifices squeezing you into intense forms of spiritual expansion along the lines of whatever planet serves as the nozzle for your Yod.
Just something to keep in mind during the next few weeks, since it's all productive in the Cap and Pisces areas, with major adjustments in the Leo sectors. And of course don't forget the Cardinal T-square now occurring with Venus moving into 22 Aries releasing the opposition-sextile-trine energies created by Mars opposed Jupiter and Mars trine Uranus opening a productive void at 22 Scorpio, the scene of this morning's Grand Water Trine.
Try to become more socialized in your instincts and responses, find the proper outlet for assertive energies, find your proper concern, offer others some nourishment, and find what you truly care about. Also keep in mind that the ongoing Venus sextile Neptune will open potential Yod points at 22-26 Virgo, affecting millions more over the next few days. It seems as though there's more going on than meets the eye!

Thanks for this.
I've always been fascinated by YODs. My first encounter came in a dream years ago that announced to me, "we're going to do the YOD today." I had to look the term up since I was (and still am) a novice....
I have two natal YODs... my SNode/JU/UR and 4th house NE form one with MC for the nozzle; then BML and MC turn back and form one with NE.
Bearing in mind the theme you illumined (expansion thru sacrifice), you might be interested to know that I have a tattoo that reads, "Accept Loss Forever..."
Warmly...

Robert my dear sage, I haven't gotten past the 3rd paragraph (where my Mars & Mercury 2 degrees each are both in Aquarius, surfing on my early 10th house)---- I feel spooked in the work/career department. My 11th house is pisces, but it is empty, in name only. You have come to recognize my upbeat views on almost everything, so I quiery you if this could not be a truly good thing? I would like to think myself capable of "organized genius" ...if only in spurts (lol) It's all good, right?
Posted by: Jan | April 22, 2008 at 02:36 PM
thanks, so helpful. My north node is at 21 pisces so i've been curious about this jupiter sextile, and of course the uranus transit. should be interesting! electrifying? we'll see! thanks for clarifying/illuminating the yod pattern for me in general as well.

I have Capricorn rising at 23 degrees, Mars in Pisces at 25 degrees (2nd House), and Moon in Leo at 20 degrees (7th House). How will this Yod affect me?

Hi Robert,
It has been quite a while since I last wrote. But today is my birthday
(4/22/63, born 12:55 a.m. in Denver, with 22 degrees Capricorn rising) -- actually, my solar return was on Sunday -- and I am curious about what is coming up for me or what words of advice or wisdom you could give me for May 3 and 4 not here, but in New Zealand. I am going there to speak -- very exciting, yes -- but I a bit concerned about the long overseas flight and all the details involved in the trip. The last time we spoke, I think you said something about me being protected during this time? Is that from the Pluto in Capricorn trine my Sun (and trine Venus May 3 and 4) or from the Jupiter in Capricorn dipping into the first house, or both?
Any helpful words you have for me to help make the trip and the speaking engagement the best it can be would be very appreciated.

Hi, Robert:
Having just read your article about Moon progressions and subsequently going for the first time to examine my progressed chart, I noticed a major major Yod configuration: Mars, Uranus, and Pluto clumped in Virgo, sextiling Neptune in Scorpio, with Sun, Mercury, and Venus at the apex in Aries. It looked intense, especially given all you said about "expansion through (multiple) sacrifice(s)"! Any interpretive wisdom?
Faithfully,
L.

Wow, So, now I understand and hopefully can navigate what is a huge shift from almost 40 years of work into another direction. My Saturn is 22 Leo in the 7th House, 6 degrees from my natal Pluto in Leo. The past years have been rough and I didn't do that great in my 2nd Saturn return. Sort of like my insides are now on the outside. I feel better now having read about this Yod and taking more action for positive change. Thank you so much for being here Robert!

Hi Windsor - You're welcome. While the Jupiter/Uranus influence is strong, I tend not to give the nodes much power in configurations, since their function is based in their relationship to where the Moon is. If the Moon isn't a factor, then the Nodes are diminished in influence to that degree. If BML is Lilith, again, I don't give much influence to that body, since most of the meaning given to it is too one sided and speculative. Your tattoo reminds me of the First great Human Truth, that "all forms pass away," but that is a joyous thing. Every emptiness can be filled, every ending a new beginning.
Hi Jan - "Spooked" is an interesting descriptor. When Jupiter goes into Aquarius you're going to be on a roll! See what's surfacing when Mars opposes your Mercury and Mars, slow down, bring the vision into effective expression, and you should be very clear by late August-early September when the inner planets all line up to trine your Aquarius planets.
Hi aa - You're welcome. Uranus on NN is revolutionizing your line of evolutionary development, and the sextile should be most productive, especially when the Moon activates your Nodes by its aspects to the axis. January through April 2009 will be of particular note due to many conjunctions falling on your NN.
Hi LJD - You confront the end of a 12 year self image and the beginning of a new adventure. Uranus is revolutionizing your Mars function and helping you synthesize how you view what you do and how you do it. Your feelings and habits will be adjusted, with some squeezed out or redirected so you can be more focused in your home life and other personal areas. Your Moon in 7th could show much of this worked out in your primary relationships, whether between you or you precipitating it in another.
Hi Melika - Happy Birthday and Solar Return. Congrats on your speaking gig! Jupiter on your Asc seems to be bringing you a new adventure, and certainly brings its own protection as long as we don't overdo, exaggerate, or overestimate whatever. Pluto trine your Sun shows the opportunity to dip deep into life, become much more in tune with the Law of Economy of Energy, and Saturn trine your Sun during this time definitely shows you're getting liberated from an old way of doing your Being. 44 was the vision, 45 the turning point. Organize, get a plan, then mobilize and you'll do fine.
Hi GBA - Ordinarily I'd de-link your name since it goes to a commercial site, but will answer you. I tend not to "make predictions." Any one sign can yield a thousand possible forecasts. That's not what this site is about.
Hi Layli - You're definitely on a pioneering mission this lifetime learning radical self sufficiency along with a more natural expression of your best self. Expect many adjustments in your Aries areas of life resulting from productive Virgo-Scorpio integration. All your collective learning serves your autonomy and ability to turn on a dime and redirect your energies to more personally relevant and interesting actions, thoughts, and feelings. You'll probably have to sacrifice some impatience, bluntness, and other Aries malfunctions to find your way to precise and perfect self expression.
Hi Sue Moon - Your Saturn function is definitely being squeezed! Having just had your Saturn return, it should have shown you anew what you can and cannot live with, and what you must leave behind to embrace a new long term adventure. Now you're in the adjustment phase of that process. Gladly let go of old hinderances, restrictions, and other chains, since in adjusting to a new long term purpose you'll find many things just don't fit your evolving Self any longer. With Neptune opposing your Saturn, narrow your interests and relationships to get a better handle on the whole of your affairs, don't get confused or discouraged in the ongoing general fog as your security systems are slowly dissolving, and prepare for a whole new set of responsibilities that will present themselves in June, be consolidated and empowered in August, and launch in 2009.

Hi Robert,
thanks again for sharing yoru insights with us.
some time back you had written in one of your articles about the significance of Saturn going direct in early May, and of Mars in cancer going over an important point (grand irrationality?) May 9 -- I wonder if you would elaborate on these changes in more detail as the dates are coming up. these last 2 wks have been very stressful for me (and continue to be) and I am wondering what's in store, some relief maybe? or more stress! Many thanks.

Hi there Robert... I know its hard to get conveyance across these lines, but believe it or not, I'm no morbid personality. My tattoo's not a statement of bleck doomsday-chic. Its a Jack Kerouac sourced soundbyte that made my heart leap for its three-word knack at conveying exactly where you went with it... I've quoted a poem below that I love. It sums up my basic hum...
It was great reading all these questions and your replies, fleshing out how these things interpret and getting a greater feel for how you work as an astrologer. I work with the Moon's Node's a lot, as well as Lilith (as a way of looking at inverse lunar themes)....but I guess one has to admit a lot of BML stuff is inconclusive. Still, it makes sense to me and I find it heavily highlighted in composite charts, transits to said, and certainly in the spare natal work I've done (just under a hundred charts so, yes, I know I'm still babystepping).
I don't understand what you said about needing to factor the Moon's actuals into how you interpret the Nodes. I thought they stood on their own for what they're worth. I'll be watching to see if you elaborate on that at some point.
Anyway, gotta run. Thanks again for all this food for thought. Here's the poem...
Willing to experience aloneness,
I discover connection everywhere;
Turning to face my fear,
I meet the warrior who lives within;
Opening to my loss,
I am given unimaginable gifts;
Surrendering into emptiness,
I find fullness without end.
Each condition I flee from pursues me.
Each condition I welcome transforms me
And becomes itself transformed
Into its radiant jewel-like essence.
I bow to the one who has made it so,
Who has crafted this Master Game;
To play it is pure delight,
To honor it is true devotion.

Hi Robert;
Thanks so much for the insights!
Both my ascendant and jupiter are at 20 deg. of Leo and I feel like I've been making intense sacrifices for the past year or so. I've always been resilient and I think I've done a pretty good job of going with the flow. This past year I've definitely seen a transition of having confidence and believing in myself even during very challenging situations(!). And I'm a virgo, so you know, we do love the tough stuff but everyone needs a break now and then - any chance I'll be on to greener pastures soon? I think I'm starting to see small glimpses...but I'm a little too shell-shocked to believe it! (8/30/67 4:49am EDT).
Thanks!!!
Beth

... and we have to remember that mid June, Mars and the South Node will be conjunct at 19, 20 and 21st of Leo, opposite the North Node with Chiron and Neptune... I want to believe that this is the end of suffering for quite a lot of people.

Hi Robert!.
My Mid Heaven is 22º Leo!.
Now I'm just enjoying rest, meditation and retracing slowly and hardly career goals for the future.
There's also Neptune opposing that fingerprint in 22º Leo, isn't it?.
Then, is it the time to do positive efforts in order to "catch the reward" in December 2008/January 2009, I assume?.

Hi Robert
Does the degree of 22 signify anything special? Jupiter is currently sextile my natal Mars in Scorpio (5th house) and square my natal Uranus (4th house) - both of these are at exactly 22 degrees and 22 minutes. I noticed that Jupiter will also go retrograde at this degree. Any advice on what to expect?

all i have to say is in one songs i wrote (soon to be recorded)
Love Or Life
Hard to choose
Love or Life
How can we put
Them together
In this world
there's not time
For Each other
but the days and nights
would be empty of meaning
without the love in life
its hard to keep moving
Doctor says
Here take this
You'll be better again
You see a bird
Isn't free unless
It can fly
Flyyyyyyyy
High
Away
How can we
Face our souls
If our hearts
Are closed
Is it something
We Can't touch
A feeling that
Is lost
I
Don't
Know
China dolls
Wooden cups
Boxed up memories
Still not sure
Which is harder
Life or Love
But if I don't try
I won't know
Will I
But the days and nights
would be empty of feeling
Without love in life
There is no Meaning

I celebrated my 68th birthday 13 April 2008. My birthplace was Trenton, Smith, Mississippi; birth event, according to my mother's diary: "1940; final push for birth began at 1 minute before midnight (12 April) with baby in doctor's hands at 1 minute after midnight (13 April); first cry came early in 2nd minute of 13 April." Though I was delivered, at home, by a doctor, my mother had insisted on having a medium at my birth; the medium's name was Margaret (Maggie) Epting. Maggie's job, again according to my mother's diary, was to make notes at my birth. My mother wanted this done due to the fact that I was her only "Aries" baby and she wanted an accurate record of the particulars of my transition from fetal dependency to independent life. Mother was Sagitarrius and my father was Aries; I was the 5th of 7 children. I give you all this information in order to ask this question: how does my solar return of 2008 impact my current dilemma of whether to leave Costa Rica, where I currently live, and return to the US? I know very little about Astrology but have become avidly, almost rabidly, interested since a friend of mine (intimate partner who traced me through the Internet and contacted me on 28 March 2008 after we had lost touch in February 1959) told me that I might find some answers to my most pressing concerns through this medium. A final question: Do you do solar return charts and if so, how do I arrange for you to do my 2008 solar return chart? Thank you in advance for any guidance you might be willing to give to me at this critical time in my life. --Betty Eppes

Robert,
I would like you to clarify the meaning of heart fire. Are you talking desires, aspirations, or relationship passions? All of the above? The next question is, I am a pluto in leo and it happens to fall in my house of finances. I have already been pulled from the lower middle class income down to poverty level income by inflation and recession. Does this mean that I will be pulled into the lower poverty level and need to get ready to sacrifice my 2 meals per day or does the Jupiter (in aries) mean that I have a chance to pull out. I am of course doing what my generation does when things get rough. I am working harder and longer hours. I am not feeling entitled, I just wonder where my help is going to come from.

Correction I am a pluto in leo generation. It also happens to fall in my house of finances. I think....

Hi Robert
Great article.
If you have time would you write and article about heart fire, or link to any previous articles.
I have Saturn at 22 Leo in the 4th. Last year my home/security was affected when my home burnt down. The story of the fire was told in the chart with powerful tranists and progresssions.
My home has been rebuilt and two weeks ago I moved back in. Now the yod will bring a new story! My entire life is changing.
Thanks for your time, effort, and service, as always from the heart.

Hi all - my responses have to be short, as my work load is overwhelming.
Hi Nandy - Yes, I'll elaborate in the next series of Spiritual Astrology for May-June 2008. I suspect some of the recent stress is due to events discussed in the Cardinal T-square article.
Hi Windsor - Thanks for the poem. I didn't think your tattoo is morbid, and with Pluto rising, I do appreciate the underworld. While Lilith may have some influence, I find there's plenty of other factors that indicate what's going on and why. Classically, the Nodes of any planet are only directly activated by an aspect from that planet. In this case, the Moon's Nodes, while a "stand-alone" influence indicating things I've discussed in many articles, must also be considered as somewhat of a passive influence until directly aspected by the Moon. The Moon's Nodes show a stronger influence when conjuncted, squared, trined etc. by the Moon. The same with the Nodes of Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and so forth.
Hi Beth - Uranus has in fact been putting you through sacrifices, and Saturn brought things to surface from late 2006 through Summer 2007. And of course, Saturn in Virgo is showing you the power of your own experience to claim your wisdom and understanding. If Saturn is responsibility, then it also shows our "response ability." 40 turns a being inward to find and demonstrate a new understanding and compassion. Around that time of life the progressed Moon opposes the natal Moon, bringing new needs and concerns to the surface while leaving behind old habits and feelings that are no longer fulfilling. 41 is a peak year where many things end, clearing the decks for what begins at 42.
Hi Alix - Yes, the release factor of the SN in Leo should help many stuck things slip away into the light of a greater Aquarian magnetism. The healing will call many to their higher Self within a greater collective experience, while negative Leo energies will get hassled as they try to defend turf already vanishing.
Hi Henry - Your career and flowering point is being squeezed so that you can get more focused. If 21+ degrees, it's showing you a form of world service. If 22+, it's showing you how to train to put on the show. Neptune on IC does make things a little weird. When Mars enters your MC, just do what comes natural.
Hi Melissa - Every degree is something special, since it occupies it's particular function in each 5 degree segment which is a particular influence within the half-sign it occupies. You'll have long term productivity, but don't let temperament mess up perfectly good opportunities. Get yourself oriented, get your drive in gear, and you'll accomplish some great things in the next few months on whatever level or degree you're functioning.
Hi Micheline - Thanks for the verse. I look forward to hearing the song.
Hi Bettie Eppes - Very good that your mom was so tuned in on the importance of the time of birth. You're a very fortunate woman. Yes, I do Solar Return charts. You can contact me via email at the left hand links. I'll respond as soon as I can. One very important thing to consider about Solar Return charts - they must always be considered in light of the natal, progressed, and transiting factors. That's why it's more relevant to check out those things first, and then see how the SR chart relates to those factors.
Hi Mary - Heart Fire is Solar Fire, one of the three Cosmic Fires that pervade our entire existence. It relates to the sign Leo. Aries is Electric Fire, whereas Sagittarius is Fire by Friction, which is said to be the Fire in all physical, emotional, and mental existence. Desire and passions are usually generated on the Astral level. Aspiration is more of the higher Mental plane, and an indicator of the Higher Self, which is an entirely different vehicle than the Soul, which "exists" on the Buddhic plane. Pluto in Leo in the 2nd house can show as amazing integrity of values, and the ability to attract major wealth once the shadow material is purified and transmuted. It shows the power of absolute irresistible regeneration and attraction of wealth in all its forms. I would say do some work with the material of Florence Scovel Shinn to remove negative expectations from your subconsciousness and replace them with powerful attractive energies.
Hi Susan - My sincere condolences on the loss of your home. That's a drag under all circumstances. I will try when I have time to compose something about the infinite power of Heart Fire to preserve and sustain that which is eternally true, good, and useful as we move through our space-time intersections on Eternity Boulevard. Thank you as well for your astrology and blog efforts. We are all in this together as we stand on the threshold of a transforming world.

hi Robert,
i forget to added in my early email, above this one ,that in 2004 I was operated from breast cancer...I was given chemo before and after the operation,it affected me a lot , later the radio-therapy burned bit my left lung leaving me with some problems.. I had heart-failure in 2006 due the toxicite of the drug I was taking to prevent the cancer return , thanks God I still clear of it , but my lungs are giving me headaches.. as there is mild changes, no one can do a thing about it .. i was told that Urunus on the 6 house give one illnes that you are difficult to diagnostic.is this truth? . i am the one who told the Drs that i was suffering from cancer.. they did Not believed as 2 years early they gave the clear, they had to do twice the biospy.. they still wonder over it.. I told them I felt it, thye told me that cancer can't be felt, but I did it .. .. wonder if having Uranus on 22 cancer opposit to Jupiter and Uranus yod will have affect on my healing as I also have Pluto at 23 of leo ..my charte is above , please advice !! thank you ..

Hi Henry - Sure. It's pretty overwhelming for all of us from time to time, but somehow I know we're going to make it to the other shore if we just keep surfing.
Hi Micheline - Someday I'll have time to get back to my own music. I'm glad you have that, since it should make the changes more enjoyable.
Hi Rona - They affect you 10,000 ways, inner and outer. The sextile builds and then releases through the multiple sacrifices that both focus and expand wherever the nozzle is. They do often show as the emergence or resolution of some health issue, since the quincunx is a health aspect forcing adjustment and/or elimination and regeneration. Uranus in the 6th can show as peculiar health conditions, but also shows that progressive, holistic, electro-magnetic, or integrative therapies are very effective. Perhaps acupuncture may be good for your system. Sorry the allopaths misdiagnosed you. They've done that to me over my entire life, and their cures just as often almost killed me as "cured" my problem. Your Venus and Pluto, already quite favorable in their relationship to your Gemini, Libra, and Sag planets, are being purified so you can express the favorable transit of Jupiter sextile Uranus, which are forming a favorable rectangle with your Sun sextile Uranus. Could be the seeds of something fantastic!

Hi Rona - Saturn on your Mars is restructuring the ruler of your 10th, which governs career matters, so you do stand on the threshold of major career developments that should be taking off by late June or early July.

Very good stuff. I really like your analysis.
