This is part of a response I gave to a client who wondered how Astrology fits in with fate, free will, karma, and other "spiritual" things. Some of you have read some of this before, and this article pulls together some far reaching concepts as well as some basic core principles and factors.
Regarding astrology, in a nutshell there are only two things that are "fated" in a life a) to be born where you were when you were to your parents, and b) the timing on certain choices. Everything else is free will, whether our own or another's. What choices we make are entirely up to us. When we must make them is built into our birth chart.
In this life we're either acting, reacting, or being acted upon. Astrology shows us our unique vintage, the qualities we are to master and use to help ourself, our loved ones, and our world to be a better place when we leave it than what was there when we were young. It can show us when we're apt to be challenged to right action, or right understanding, or non-action, or whatever.
Our astrological chart is a road map and a weather report, but the planets never "make anything happen." It is us who drive our boat, not some abstract symbolic pattern. However, we do live within a larger field, and that's what astrology helps us understand.
Astrology deals with patterns and cycles. We have physical-material cycles, emotional cycles, mental cycles, and spiritual cycles. These operate on three dimensions of human existence: the Personal, the Interpersonal, and the Transpersonal. These 12 frequency zones is where we work out many things.
We have both "big K" karma and "little k" karmas. Little karmas are those causes we've set into motion this life or another and must deal with, whether "favorable" or "unfavorable." "Big K" Karma are things like "acts of God," "Sacred Wounds," and other things that we may not have created per se, but will transform our lives forever and move us into the Great Mystery.
Everything that happens this life is a result of the hologram we created and perpetuated last life or choices we made or avoided in our past this life. It's our job to transmute the difficult experiences into love-wisdom and intelligent actions, thoughts, and feelings so that we don't have to do those difficulties again. Of course, as we learn so we will teach, or assist others in their understanding of those things we share with them.
Sometimes when difficulty arises, it's not necessarily due to our own actions in this life or another. Sometimes bad people do bad things to good people so good people can learn not to allow their kindness and compassion to be mistaken for weakness or a lack of spiritual clarity. We resonate to certain people, experiences, and truths, and do not resonate with others.
We all have gifts and a Higher Self to realize, apply, then skillfully utilize. We find our Higher Self through personality integration techniques that take us out of the ignorance, attachments, desires, aversions, illusions, and negativity of the lower ego while helping us explore and identify with Being our Higher Self, whatever that may be.
For more insights about Astrology, you may want to check out What Is Astrology? since it fills in some things I didn't really explore here. I also have quite a few articles covering the nature of Karma, Thought-Forms, and other Spiritual subjects in the archives which elaborate on those subjects, so enjoy exploring the gold mine!

This is very informative ... I know people who stress constantly over astrology and the placement of planets, I mean, to the point of distraction. I realize it is difficult to feel empowered in this world, but it is possible to control our fear and try to make decent choices. Particularly when the lights go on, if you know what I mean, and we know better. That's the kicker, knowing when you should know better, yes?

Great comment! Robert, I am grateful to know about your writing; you are so prolific. I really appreciate your sharing so much so freely with all of us who have discovered your site. Thank you kindly, sir.
P.S.
Would you be willing to share your birth info? I know you recently had a birthday, but that is all I know.

Hi Juliet - Yes, but how can one duplicate oneself? I need time to restructure my life, which only I can do. I need to set up online classes, create a shop on this site to offer things related to the group work, find time to write three necessary books, and still plant my fruit trees and tend my garden while researching potential sites for the physical center AND create the virtual center.
Hi donna - Yes, I've known people who couldn't dress without consulting where the Moon is. That said, there are better and worse times to do things. Common sense plays a big part here. Fear is ALWAYS a good thing to root out under all circumstances.
Hi MAK - You're most welcome. My birth chart is a living testimony to the power of Spirit and the strength of Heart Fire to direct a difficult astrological chart to higher purposes. April 1, 1951, 1:13:40 pm, Chester, PA, USA.

Hi Robert,
I do think we all should see everything as free will. It gives us the mojo to fight our way and achieve the impossible. But hey, if it doesn't happen in the end, just accept it and move on. This way we are sure we did everything we could, so we can carry on in peace.

Hi Ricardo - Well, given how much choice we have to do the right thing or not in any given situation, yes, I agree that Free Will we all possess all the time is a much stronger tool than many suspect. It does give us strength, determination, and power to do things we can barely imagine. And yes, regardless of whether we get the results we hope for or not, we must learn and flow with the fact that "all forms pass away." We must do all we can in the moment so we can look at ourselves in the mirror with no doubt that we did our best to whatever degree we were able. That brings its own peace, since often things are beyond our direct control and there are other variables we do not have the ability to influence (like another's free will!)
