Jupiter in Aquarius brings social power and group initiation resulting from Jupiter in Capricorn's organizing of the new horizons, visions of higher truths, and greater opportunities opened by 2007's Jupiter in Sag. Jupiter, the "expansive principle," or "guru" in Sanskrit, teaches us ways to liberate ourselves as it makes it way through the zodiac. Wherever we have Sagittarius and Pisces planets and houses, we should open to a broader vision, accept a larger responsibility, and welcome friends as we enter into greater group awareness and social effectiveness.
In Aquarius, Jupiter's energies both open and complete their natural Sag and Pisces functions. Being a mix of Fire and Water, Jupiter isn't naturally at home in the Air sign of Aquarius, but it's certainly in a better sign than Capricorn, which as I explained last year is the sign of Jupiter's "fall," or grounds of least growth.
In 2009, Jupiter begins its year long conjunction with Neptune, the spiritual co-ruler of Sagittarius and Pisces. This blending of the worldly and spiritual rulers of these signs should bring clarity, vision, and a healthy fusion of these energies. Aquarius is the sign of angels and spiritual touchstones that endure across vast swaths of time. 2009 is the year these shall come forth in a big way.
Jupiter will continue to influence Uranus strongly, since Uranus is in a sign ruled by Jupiter. Jupiter's influence will be strong in January as Venus is in Pisces, and will again be a major force in March and April during the times when the Sun, Mercury, Mars, and Venus are in Pisces. Of course, during the period when Jupiter is in Aquarius, Saturn will be very influential, since it's the ruler of Aquarius.
Jupiter will form a variety of aspects with Saturn this year, thus creating more instability than we've had in 2008 due to the very predictable and stabilizing trine between Jupiter and Saturn. Late January and early February we have a sesquisquare, moving into the biquintile a month later. Mid-March we have a quincunx, while late March through mid-April we have a triseptile.
May, June, and early July they form a quadranovile, then Jupiter retrogrades back through the aspects it made during the Spring until it goes stationary direct in October again making a sesquisquare to Saturn through early November. After that they make no aspect until January 2010's biquintile and quincunx, though the quincunx of early 2010 is from Jupiter in Pisces to Saturn in Libra.
In any case, all the Sag and Pisces transits in 2009 will have more of an Aquarian face, and so especially in the first part of the year as all the inner planets transit Pisces there will be a need for us to get a larger view of our friendships, ambitions, and group purpose in our Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Leo, Virgo, Libra, and Scorpio areas of our lives.
Jupiter initiates great new beginnings when in Cardinal signs, opens new stable freedoms when in the Fixed signs, and distributes deeper, wider, more varied types of energies in the Mutable signs. Jupiter rules the mutable signs of Sagittarius and Pisces, thus mutability is an inherent part of Jupiter's nature, and why it can do such rich and prodigal distributions of whatever realm it touches.
Aquarius is Fixed Air, so expect lots of Air energy to be stabilized and distributed over the next 12 months by Jupiter's presence in that sign. As I mentioned, it also indicates that Saturn will be a very important influence in 2009, as it will rule Jupiter. As Saturn is in Virgo, this Mutable Earth influence behind the Air of Jupiter and Neptune and the Earth of Pluto will prove very grounding wherever we have planets or houses involving Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces, especially when Mercury is in Capricorn and Aquarius.
Jupiter moves forward through June 2009, when it goes stationary retrograde at 28 Aquarius on June 15, 2009. It then retrogrades back to 18 Aquarius, going stationary direct on October 12, 2009 (October 13 EST and points east), retracing its steps through January 2010 when it slips into Pisces.
For most of 2010 how we experience Uranus energies will be much more Piscean in flavor, though that year Uranus will spend a few weeks in Aries, giving us flashes of the future and bringing Mars and Pluto to the forefront. Still, when Jupiter is in Pisces, it begins a time for us to say goodbye to many things and become more compassionate and forgiving as we further develop the visions, group work, and idealistic social forms we've found during the Jupiter in Aquarius period.
Until then, go for a more idealistic vision of greater social effectiveness, claim your power of expansion and opportunity in whatever sector Jupiter transits, and get a bigger picture of your freedom of growth in a larger group context. This year is great for liberating ourselves from old truths and moral values which limit more than free us.
2008 gave us the practical structures to expand our sense of service, work, and disciplines. Now we enter a time to ground the vision in a larger field of activity, and move into more ideal accomplishments. Move out of plodding narrow views and crystalized controlling behaviors, and learn to let your imagination fly!
Obviously each sign will have its own quality of responding to Jupiter in Aquarius energies. Expect your life to take on a more idealistic and even friendly outreach wherever it affects you, and stay open to learning a broader view of how to apply power effectively.
What follows is how it will affect your specific sign. If you know your Ascendant, or Rising Sign, read that paragraph as well.
One thing: If your Sun or Ascendant is in the first half of a sign, what I've written will be very prominent all year. If your Sun or Ascendant is in the last half of a sign, then some of what I've written will be effective all year, while other elements will be more prominent from March through August, and again in December into January 2010. (And that's why it's good to consult an astrologer who can specifically analyze what's up and when!)
Aries: Expect continued high visibility and authority within a larger group or social work. See how old motives and recent closures prepared you for the way the world is recognizing you. This gives integrated understanding of your persistent aspirations, visions of a better future, as well as rewards for long held motives. Stabilize the learning and teaching roles you're playing in public situations, since this year solidifies the recognition you've been given.
Taurus: Expect greater professional visibility, authority, and recognition while seeing what to eliminate or regenerate. This will bring new or renewed friendships with unusual or brilliant people, and your magnetism and social values will bring a larger sense of your role in a greater group work. Keep learning and teaching in high profile settings, and use this year to stabilize long held ambitions.
Gemini: You'll see a bigger picture of relationships this year and more ideal ways of expressing yourself in public. Eliminate to regenerate, and move into a larger view of potential futures. Create space to attract more assets and resources while putting together all the pieces of puzzles to see greater opportunities. This can lead you to a grand adventure, so travel, go back to school, or study higher spiritual things, as there are major rewards for expanding your view.
Cancer: Take a broader view of relationships and shared resources while becoming more genuinely friendly and detached. Allow yourself and others more freedom to express ideas and ideals. See how health factors are interrelated, and embrace innovative health regimens. Get a larger view of your future as well as a learning discipline that can bring your truth, morality, or philosophy into more concrete and ideal forms.
Leo: This year brings exciting new relationships with innovative and expansive individuals. Just make sure that details are taken care of and excessive idealism is balanced by a mature understanding and overview of the whole of situations. Embrace your creativity and play more with your friends. Eliminate old fixed ideas that can't attract what you want. See how old losses and defeats gave you a larger sense of your power to attract your ideals.
Virgo: This year you can anchor a larger and more detached view of your past and early life experiences, and adjust to a bigger picture of your effectiveness. You should be able to make some great friendships in your work. Embrace innovative health techniques and technology, and be willing to open to more equal relationships with unusual or brilliant people. See the big picture of what has brought you to this point in your relationships, and expect rewards for past diligence.
Libra: Play more, create more, and open to what those younger than you can teach you. Be willing to adjust your work disciplines to embrace an integrated vision. Take a larger view of those close to you and/or environmental factors to understand a better ideal, or subtle factors that have undermined you in the past. Find a natural self expression in a greater group work, communicate more openly, and adjust to a larger role in your community.
Scorpio: This opens a new home life and a bigger view of how early childhood factors created the foundations from which you can launch a greater creativity or attract more ideal resources. See the value in the friends you have, and help those younger than you open to a larger vision of the interrelationships in their motives or self undoing behaviors. Be creative and detached in dealing with home and family issues while staying focused on the bigger picture.
Sagittarius: This opens a much bigger view of who you are, who your close relations are, what your foundations are, and how to stabilize your home and family life in a more ideal view of the larger issues involved. Open to a greater group work or form of world service, seeing how your past offered you ideas and perceptions that now can yield better friendly relationships with literal and metaphoric brothers and sisters of the Spirit.
Capricorn: Expect communications with friends involving new work, new resources, new ways of viewing how to use what you have or value in a larger context. This year should offer a larger view of the interrelationships in those close to you, as well as a more detached communication style. You can also achieve closure in old motives, old ways of viewing things, and concretize the new initiatives of 2008.
Aquarius: This is the beginning of 12 years of magic, adventure, or any other thing you know is true for your heart strength, highest ambitions, friendships, values, and resources. This liberates you to embrace a wider life and effectiveness, and will produce an entirely different world view. Greet your quest philosophically with humor and openness, and be willing to learn, teach, travel, and expand your horizons beyond what you've known up to now.
Pisces: You can fulfill an old karma, and find rewards for your persistence in growing these past 11 years into new views, new self images, and new ways of seeing yourself professionally. This ends an old public image of yourself, and offers you a wider view of the interrelationships in your motives and old behaviors that used to cause you frustration or sorrow. You'll be able to detach more easily, but with dispassion and genuine friendliness to yourself and others.
So as we slip out of the old year into a new one here in the Western world (the Chinese New Year of the Earth Ox doesn't begin for a few weeks - I'll be writing about that soon!) remember to count your blessings, be willing to persevere in following through on whatever duties and responsibilities that began this past year, and be thankful for life, love, and the freedom to live these in our somewhat wild, irrational world.
This year idealism, friendliness, compassion, and a sense of how you can contribute to a greater future within a larger group field than you've imagined before now will pay huge long term dividends. This is a year of community building, and will set dreams of a better collective ideal into the Divine Atmosphere, a.k.a., the great field of Maya within which all forms come forth and to which all forms subside.
See you in 2009, and remember that God is All there IS, so give thanks every day with every breath you take. Aum and blessings to you all!

I am really excited about Jupiter in Aquarius for some reason. Maybe because I'm a Pisces with a lot of Sagg in my chart. I just feel very inexplicable cheered up by the prospect of it.

Yay for Ox year. (Rooster) Rooster and Rat are no good compadres (although the Rat's tenacity and ambition have helped me get a hold on my health)

I am excited about Jup in Aq as well. As the hopi prophecy says there is no time for the lone wolf. We will have others working with us now and the boat easier to row, the garden easier to hoe. So, row, row, row our boat gently up the stream, merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream.

It is a bit offtopic but can someone explain me one thing. Right at this moment transit Jupiter is in conjuction with mu natal Venus, square natal Moon, opposite natal Jupiter and in sextile with natal Asc and Mercury. Logically this should be one of happiest or at least easiest periods but on the contrary right now i am going through one of the toughest relationship breakups and neverending depression. Everything seems hopeless for me atm. Where is the logic? :( Or are there other things that cause this pain and emotional suffering?
natal data:
02. march.1979
07.00 AM Central European Time
19.49 East
45.00 North
Thanks

Hello Wroom:
Your question merits an in-depth reading (which I'm not qualified to give), but from the quick view of your chart: you just had your Saturn Return and Saturn is now stationary retrograde within slightly-wide orb of your Ascendant. This suggests to me you are still in a period of tremendous growth and need to let go of structures and relationships that have outgrown their use. This is reinforced by the fact Saturn will RX to about 14 Virgo and will be within orb of opposing your Sun at 11 Pisces (its stationary direct point) in late spring. Saturn opposed the sun is a possible signifier of depression (as is transiting Saturn conjunct the natal sun). Inevitably, there is some greater lesson/understanding about yourself to be learned/appreciated right now - and once you do, life will seem less stressful - the feelings of depression will eventually pass. In the mean time, it is critically important that you take care of yourself.
Many blessings to you and a happy new year.
- Matt

Thanks Robert, this is exciting, because I am the Aquarian......and you say it's the beginning of 12 years of Magic and Adventure. Time to get started! Happy New Year to You!

Well everything was fine when Saturn was hitting his natal position few months ago (when exact SR was in place) but it seems that effects are delayed :( Anyway it it seams that Jupiter transits are not that strong afterall (for some people).
Thank you Matt :)

I (10/5/55) wish I could get juiced about the Jupiter change, but I'm so overwhelmed w/being the sole caretaker of my brother (1/20/66)who has Down syndrome that I can't get happy. I have Scorpio asc. (15°17'01)& John has Leo asc. (3°34'33). We're stuck in Vegas (don't ask)and have an opportunity to rent a house in a cohousing (not a commune!)community in Tucson. Landlords will hold the house until March but my lease doesn't expire here until 5/15, and it looks bad for getting out of it early. I need to manifest money FAST in order to pay double rents. I want to get us into a loving community of real neighbors, but...OMG, not looking good. (Mars in Virgo--worrywart). Anyone know how my domestic situation will be affected with Aq. on 4th house cusp? (Hi, God, it's me, Juli. How come you hate me?) Advice from anyone will be greatly appreciated!! Thank you, and happy 2009 to all!

Last time Jupiter went over my Aquarius AC I found the love of my life, after a looong dry spell, just as easily and as naturally as one could hope for. It was a unusual feeling of absolute knowing, both that he was the person for me and that it would work out. And so far, it has. I also gained 50 pounds! A lovely combo of quitting smoking and hormonal changes made that appear quite easily as well! This time I will be more careful with my diet as I go through this. I look hopefully forward, after a looong dry spell, to some fulfillment in the creative/career arena. Many thanks for this article, Robert! And happy new year to you and all here!
PS In October, Jupiter stations on the degree of Obama's AC! Should be interesting to note what happens.

Hi Christine - Jupiter in Aquarius brings expansion to those angelic energies, so maybe that's why there's such a universally positive expectation!
Hi Damien - Will be composing a bunch on the coming year of the Earth Ox soon!
Hi Vera - You're right about the "lone wolf," since all of humanity is overcoming the "heresy of separateness" to remember that together we can and will remake this world into a better future than the darkness of the past. And yes, life is but a dream....
Hi Wroom - Jupiter does not necessarily make for "happiness," since that transitory state resides in the mind, and is entirely dependent on one's point of view. "We're just about as happy as we make our minds up to be," to paraphrase Mark Twain. While that involves our Jupiter, it also involves most of our other planetary functions as well. For example, when we're "not happy," Saturn may be more prominent in our lessons. It's been putting pressure on your Sun, Asc, and Saturn for a while now. Matt gave you some good advice. Use Jupiter to expand your view of your potential, and follow these hints from Spirit, since the coming year should bring major rewards preparing you for a new adventure in 2010. Jupiter's strength is in its own realm, not Saturn's.
Hi Michele - Glad you like it. As you know, I used a little of it on our recent visit on your Awakenings show.
Hi Matt - Good analysis for Wroom. Saturn returns can be difficult if we're drifting or refuse to move, and challenge us to plug in our free will to make our lives more an expression of Dharma. The degree of difficulty usually shows the degree of resistance.
Hi Luz - Welcome to a grand adventure set to begin soon!
Hi Juli - Jupiter and Mars both rolling through your 4th house should show a major move. 2nd house is money, 8th is your ability to attract it. Demand a revelation from Spirit within a week and you'll get one. I'm sorry you're in difficult circumstances, but Jupiter favorable to your Sun should help your professional growth. Saturn is favorable to your Asc, Jupiter rules your 2nd, so I doubt you'll be stuck in LV for much longer. Tucson's a great place. And please stop joking about "God hating you." Not a good affirmation, and the Lipika Lords of Karma only bring forth what we have affirmed in thought, word, and deed. Better to affirm Divine Mother will send you just the signals and opportunities you need to care for and be cared for. Open to expecting opportunity, and it will show up.
Hi reefaroundme - Now you get another whole lesson of Jupiter's power of long term expansion! You're most welcome of course. Will try to compose something else on Obama in the near future.

Thank you, Robert! I'm very grateful for your response and awed by your generosity. I'll take your excellent advice and raise my thinking and internal dialogue to a higher, positive level. May your good deeds return to you a thousandfold!
Posted by: Juli Barbato | January 04, 2009 at 02:38 PM
Hi Juli - Sure. Always good to focus on what we want to come forth without affirming anything that could disrupt the thought form. Mostly I figure we all learn to say things we really don't mean, and a lot of getting our sights clear involves examining what we think, what we say, and what we believe could be.

Thanks, Robert. You rock, period. Heard your radio interview then was glad to be able to review what you said there via this post. Pranams upon pranams for being one of my astrological guidestars.

Hi Layli - Be sure to tune into the next interview coming this Wednesday. I'll post something on the front page. Glad you're on board!

I have a Jupiter return in Aquarius on the 31st.
I'm an Aries with a Libra Ascendant.
I've got the feeling this will be a very great year for me after I went through a very rough year in 2008 with Jupiter in Capricorn.
Posted by: Daniel | January 18, 2009 at 02:42 AM
Hi Daniel - You'll probably have a blast enjoying the ride of an expanding universe for a while. You learned to care. You learned what you need to care for, care about, and will find strength, heart, and courage in the coming months. Expect late Feb and early March to show you hints and techniques.
