Today we take a look at how we deal with many Yods, or "Fingers of God," throughout our lifetimes.
In "Astrology Class - The Yod, or Finger of God - What is it, and how does it work?" we examined the basics of this powerful configuration. If you haven't read that, you may want to check out the material there, since it sets the foundation for understanding what we're going to explore today.
To note, today's subject is somewhat technical, and may only appeal to those with some knowledge of how astrology works. But we do cover an important transit coming that will impact all generations born between 1942 to 1996.
Any Yod is created by two planets in sextile, with a third at the inverse midpoint creating two quincunxes to the planets in sextile. As you can surmise, this creates potential Yod configurations any time two planets sextile each other, whether by progression or transit.
When two planets sextile, it usually yields a form of productivity involving the houses they occupy. By examining the inverse midpoint, we may surmise that zone or point becomes activated many times, including each day by the transiting Ascendant and Midheaven. It still remains an active zone of "expansion through sacrifice" where the two planets in sextile can find themselves squeezed in ways that augment spiritual effectiveness, focused by whatever is stimulating the inverse midpoint.
We don't have to have a natal planet in a zone to experience the multiple "expansion through sacrifice" energies of the Yod. These configurations are also set into motion whenever any planet (by progression or transit) move through these inverse midpoint zones.
Thus during the decades when Neptune sextiled Pluto, many Yods were formed. When Neptune in Libra sextiled Pluto in Leo during the 40s through the mid-50s, the inverse midpoint moved through the sign of Pisces. When Neptune in Scorpio sextiled Pluto in Virgo, the inverse midpoint moved through Aries. When Neptune in Sagittarius sextiled Pluto in Libra, the inverse midpoint moved through Taurus. When Neptune in Capricorn sextiled Pluto in Scorpio, the inverse midpoint moved through Gemini.
These 4 groups comprise most people alive on Earth today. Each of these generational groups experience a Yod, or Finger of God, every year in the Spring, as the inner planets move through Pisces, Aries, Taurus, and Gemini.
As each generation experiences a transit in double quincunx to their Neptune and Pluto, multiple "expansion through sacrifice" energies are set into motion. These sacrifices leading to spiritual expansion will be seen in the house where the inverse midpoint planet occupies, as well as the houses that planet rules in the chart.
When Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto are involved in any of the three legs of a Yod, there are transpersonal forces beyond our individual control at play. When these are triggered in a Yod, it requires an enormous willingness to embrace our highest spiritual ideal rather than yield to usual points of view. The planet at the inverse midpoint is the one getting squeezed into a more authentic spiritual focus.
As an aside, this implies an even heavier karmic life for those with two of the outer invisible planets conjunct making a sextile to the third. The times when this happened are late 1964-mid 1969, when Uranus conjuncted Pluto sextile Neptune, and Spring 1991-Spring 1997, when Uranus conjuncted Neptune sextile Pluto.
Where the sextile involving outer planets falls in our maps we are offered productive outlets. Depending on the planets involved, it can include everything from organized genius to pragmatic intuitive synthesis to divine economy of energy sprouting seeds of transformation.
Even when the sextile is not exact, we see the effects at work in an "off-set" way. That shows as the planet quincunxing one and then the other across weeks, setting the Yod into a long term motion. The sacrifices don't work all at once, but in an interlocking way across time.
On a final note for today, the next few years will be extraordinarily important for all generations born since 1942. This is because Jupiter will transit Pisces, Aries, Taurus, and Gemini in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013, making successive Yods to the generations mentioned above. Knowing where your Neptune and Pluto are will assist you in preparing for this series of life-altering expansions.
The Neptune in Libra-Pluto in Leo generation has already had its dress rehearsal thanks to transiting Uranus in Pisces these past few years. When it moves into Aries, it will begin to impact the Neptune in Scorpio-Pluto in Virgo generation. Thus those born in the 1940s and early 1950s have already been thrown into dynamic "expansion through sacrifice" mode the past few years, while those born in the mid-to-late 1950s are about to enter the crunch.
Food for thought as we approach the rendezvous with a greater destiny across 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013.

dear Robert, much thanks for giving me more understanding of why i feel like I have taken the "advanced placement" route this incarnation. I was born in 1966 with the Pluto-Uranus conjunction onn my midheaven, "a heavy karmic life" indeed, but making much spiritual progress. Maybe it's time for a follow-up reading with you. Thanks again for the insight.

Hello Robert,
I've been trying to figure out these "Yod" things for a while now. If I'm correct, I believe my wife has two of them in her chart. In her third house which is scorpio she has Saturn at 10 and mars at 13, in her fifth house she which is capricorn she has Jupiter at 11, then in her 10th which is gemini she has venus at 8 and her sun at 12. With so many variables, I have no idea what to make of this. Those certainly sound like significant planets in key placements, but how would one come to understand all their interconnected effects?
Thanks for what you do.

Your Web-site, the right hand 'recent comments' column overlays the text in the cente of the page and hides the last word in the line.
If one clicks 'full screen' it improves slightly but one is still unable to always read the last word.

Thanks Robert, I'll prepare for the changes with my parents with adjusted considerations. Also, there's a star shape/pentagon in my chart today and I'll take that as reassurance.

Thank you Robert.
Very interesting!

You can say that again. Food for thought. I always wondered about yods formed by transits. I've been in the blender for a while already, with Neptune 23 Lib and Pluto 23 Leo (June 1954). I think that expansion through sacrifice would accurately describe my experience in many respects. I also have a sextile of Mars (Cap)and Saturn (Sco) and I've observed things happen when planets pass that inverse midpoint, which is also conjunct my 4th house cusp. And so on. Thanks for the insight!
Namaste :)

Hi Yeshe - Sure. The mid-60s were a VERY heavy time to be alive, whether here or born. Aries is the void nozzle sign for that major conjunction sextile Neptune, so no doubt you'll get productively squeezed each time something transits that zone. As for another reading, I'm now booked until early January, so I suggest not procrastinating!
Hi wickleback - The Sun is the focus of the Yod, since her Venus is triseptile Mars, not quincunx. As for the interconnected effects, that's more the realm of a lesson or personal session. Just too much to explain and/or synthesize for a comment stream.
Hi William Taylor - I tried to pull it up on several computer screens, and it seems okay to me. I suspect it may have something to do with the settings on your monitor, either on the computer or on the monitor itself, depending on what model it is.
Hi leslie - All quintile series aspects give us a chance to polish skills we already know. Glad you have confidence. Good trait when combined with discrimination.
Hi kachina - You're welcome.
Hi Valerie - We all go through far more adjustments in the name of "expansion through sacrifice" than we suspect. That's why there's no percentage in sweating or agonizing over them. Adjust, sacrifice, and get the productive benefits of things being squeezed out that we no longer need or which are not useful for that particular productivity. Your particular zone is about 21-25 Pisces (welcome to Uranus....) Though the inners stimulate that zone each Spring, this coming Season Jupiter should give the blessing, teaching, or vision around those larger lessons. The forces unleashed in Aries are somewhat unrelated to those unleashed in Gemini, since different planets have different symbolic zones of influence. Two different functions, similar in how they work but in different areas of your life.

Thank you very much Robert, that is very helpful. And I'm certainly looking forward to Jupiter moving into Pisces! :)

Hello- I have a question about the yod in my chart. I was born in 1968, so I have the Uranus - Neptune - Saturn configuration. Just wanted to clarify - it's the opposite midpoint/house placement where the sacrifices are found? I have Saturn at 25 Aries. And I'm looking at transiting Saturn hitting that region of the 12th house sometime year after next. Is it the transit of the midpoint or the nozzle that makes the most impact?
Thanks!
Kerrie

Robert, Uranus is turning direct on my natal Mars at 23 Pisces (8/8/56 Taurus rising). It was not exact but does the station make it more active? I have Pluto/Neptune sextile Leo/Libra at 27 degrees which makes a loose yod to my natal Mars, activated by Uranus. Can you give direction??
Posted by: Rhonda Murrey | December 01, 2009 at 08:47 PM
Hi Valerie - You're most welcome. When Jupiter moves into Pisces, I get a Jupiter return (lucky me, along with my Saturn return!) Since they oppose each other in my natal chart, it should be an interesting time of separation and uniting. "You say goodbye, I say hello...."
Hi Kerrie - Not exactly. All three points must adjust. It's just the adjustments of the planets in sextile get a certain productivity, while the inverse midpoint planet just gets to move in multiple directions at once. Things get squeezed into the nozzle. What comes out shows what was adjusted or removed. The transit to either the midpoint or the specific degree will produce results in both cases. There are more factors than just these, of course, since many points are triggered simultaneously by any given transit to any given natal point or configuration, but that's beyond a comment stream, and more a subject for deeper study and/or personal in-depth sessions.
Hi Rhonda Murrey - Yes, a planetary station makes that zone much more active for a far greater length of time than is usually the case. Actually, the potential Yod was activated by Uranus last Spring. Your Mars is not really a Yod, since it makes a biquintile to your Libra and a triseptile to your Leo. It became a Yod by progression, probably when you were 3-6 years old depending on the speed of Mars. But Uranus definitely has activated the Yod, and also awakened your Mars function in some important way. Think Uranian energy helping your Mars synthesize its various methods into a more effective and fluid (Pisces) expression.
Of somewhat more immediate importance is Mars moving back and forth across your Sun at the bottom of your chart. You're being exposed to entirely new forms of enlightened self expression and ways of living. Prepare to undo some elements of your light/life in January and February, and you'll be moving into a more integrated reality by next May.
