Over the next 4 weeks, the New Moon in Capricorn indicates a time where we will organize or reorganize the potential futures of last month, and surrender to achieve victory. The next four weeks we get to go into a deeper faith, and grow through seeing the structural strengths or weaknesses in plans and ideas, and find the “way within to outer success.” This period shows us shortcuts to achieving our intention where we can accomplish a lot.
This New Moon in Capricorn is pragmatic, organizing, and will show us how well we are doing what we’re doing as we move away from what is known and familiar. See who is and is not part of your “tribe”, and if in doubt, help them “back to shore.” This marks a point where the Venus lessons of last April, May, and June will open us to new truths, new opportunities, or new life adventures.
The next four weeks will throw everyone into a concentrated self-reorganization within a larger group context, help us in the next stage of letting go of fear in all its forms, and help us achieve our goals through a) seeing a clear vision of what is to be accomplished, b) getting a step-plan that helps us achieve our goals, and c) figuring out the right time to begin the effort. That will yield a quickening that can get us through the tunnel, and see the light at the other end as the reward for making the passage, and not a train coming right at us!
This time will open up new understanding, new connection, new work, new authority, and new relationships. There is much power available for those who get a plan, but keep in mind that with Saturn in Scorpio, we’re still in a long term elimination-regeneration phase of our lives and work. Saturn continues to set up situations where we’ll all be introduced into more complex, intense, and/or deep relationships. The next 4 weeks will continue our process of going deeper into the vision glimpsed the last New Moon, and help us understand through practical efforts who we’re related to spiritually, and who understands us (and who doesn’t!)
This self-initiating practical New Moon occurs at 22 Capricorn on January 11, 11:44 am PST, 2:44 pm EST and 7:44 pm Greenwich (Jan 12 in Pakistan and point east). When a Lunation is on one of the angles of a chart, it is said to be particularly powerful. Among the cities covered in this column, this month the Lunation is culminating from Santa Monica to Vancouver, setting in Rio and Montreal, on the nadir in Moscow, Pakistan, and India, and rising in Australia. This Lunation shows late Aries through early Cancer rising across North America.
The Lunation finds 29 Aries rising in Santa Monica, 1 Taurus in Vancouver, 1 Cancer in Montreal, 22 Gemini in Washington DC, 25 Gemini in Rio, 19 Leo in Lisbon, 30 Leo in London, 10 Virgo in Berlin, 27 Virgo in Moscow, 16 Virgo Sofia, and 11 Virgo rising in Johannesburg.
Moving into Asia and Oceana, we find Ascendants at 26 Libra in Abbottabad (12 Jan), 1 Scorpio in New Delhi, 5 Scorpio in Trivandrum, 5 Sagittarius in Hong Kong, 21 Sagittarius in Tokyo, 30 Sagittarius in Perth, 28 Capricorn in Melbourne, 30 Capricorn in Brisbane, 23 Aquarius in Wellington, and 6 Pisces rising on Maui (11 Jan).
So you can construct a rough chart for where you are in the world, I’ll give you the rounded up degree for each planet. Use the Ascendants given above to get a rough sense of what’s on the eastern horizon where you are, and using an Equal House system, you can see what’s going on in your part of the world for the next 4 weeks.
In this New Moon at 22 Capricorn, Mercury is 18 Capricorn, Venus is 4 Capricorn, Mars is 14 Aquarius, Jupiter is 7 Gemini, Saturn is 11 Scorpio, Uranus is 5 Aries, Neptune is 2 Pisces, Pluto is 10 Capricorn, TransPluto is 1 Virgo, Chiron is 7 Pisces, and the NN is 25 Scorpio.
This is the eighth in a sequence of New Moons that fall in the sign preceding the Sun of the following Full Moon. In other words, this New Moon in Capricorn will have a Full Moon in Aquarius and Leo. This reverses the sequence of the 20 months preceding the 2012 Gemini New Moon that all had the New Moon in the same sign as the subsequent Full Moon.
That pattern is now reversed for many months to come. I explain this phenomenon and what it means in the Full Moon articles, so I’ll elaborate on this new beginning that reverses “the natural order of things” in the next Full Moon articles coming in about two weeks.
The New Moons and Full Moons are “God’s footprints in time.” Each shows the next in the 12 phases of how things come to be each year. The cycle could be described as follows: Life energy is initiated in Aries, substantiated in Taurus, explored in Gemini, grounded in Cancer, renewed and creatively expressed in Leo, refined and ordered in Virgo, balanced in Libra, purified in Scorpio, expanded in Sagittarius, organized in Capricorn, solidified into a vision in Aquarius, and ended/perpetuated in Pisces.
This New Moon Solar Eclipse at 22 Capricorn, like other recent Lunations, puts the focus on learning, communicating, discovering, and perceiving new ideas and ways of relating to others due to Jupiter being the handle of the “Bucket” Jones pattern at 7 Gemini, the degree where it will go stationary direct on January 30, 3:37 am PST, 11:37 am UT. Much that we focus on during the next 4 weeks will help us to a new understanding, a new view, a new way of organizing all the information and potential opened at the last New Moon, and center us in the faith that if we know what will nourish us, go to the right place and do the right effort, we shall find what we need.
So as with past Lunations since last Summer, while Jupiter is in Gemini we’ll continue to learn more and more, expanding into new truths and potential futures that have opened since then. This is a phase where we complete a major chapter in our liberation from ghosts of the past going on since the 2011 Gemini Solar Eclipse. When Jupiter retrograded over the degree of that eclipse in late November and early December, it accelerated the eclipse effect, so we’ve recently shed even more ghosts of the past. This process will be done by this Spring.
This Lunation jumpstarts Capricorn energy wherever it falls in our chart. As I mentioned earlier, this period involves us learning how to open to our part within a greater “group performance” where we can demonstrate our personal power in unfamiliar circumstances.
This New Moon has a social-emotional focus. As it falls in Capricorn, Saturn and Uranus rule the Lunation. That makes Saturn, leader of the larger Bucket pattern, and Uranus, the closer of that larger pattern, very powerful backdrop energies to this New Moon. As they’re in a biquintile, this period will bring highly specialized interactions, as well as karmic “boomerangs” for those who didn’t do the tough work up front.
Of note is that with Mars in Aquarius and Saturn in Scorpio, it puts these planets in Mutual reception, a very powerful energy exchange. (I’ll be posting an update to that article soon, since the positions mentioned as examples happened a while ago.) At least their square is separating, showing turning points in the past rather than hard edges to be navigated in the future!
Of further interest is that Mars in Aquarius and Uranus in Aries are also in mutual reception, showing a rare “double mutual reception” that will lock in some major effects in these planets’ interlocking aspects. Mars in this chart is in an exact forming septile with Uranus, showing it’s a major turning point wherever we have mid-Aquarius and early Aries in our natal charts.
This period will quicken, accelerate, and penetrate to the heart of our intention. Those most affected are planets or points near 13-15 Aquarius, 4-6 Aries, 26-28 Taurus, 18-20 Cancer, 9-11 Virgo, 1-3 Scorpio, and 22-24 Sagittarius. If you have a planet near these zones, expect dramatic forks in the road of your destiny that will throw you into a new vision, a new identity, and accelerate your evolution in the direction of the long wave growth you’ve embraced the past year and a half.
So this New Moon is ruled (in this world) by Saturn, and in the spiritual dimension by Uranus, both of which are in a mutual reception with Mars in Aquarius. This continues to help us both eliminate and regenerate, see a bigger picture as we repair what has decayed, or let go of that which no longer works. This also shows us what we can expect not that far in the future once the inner planets all enter Aquarius and also square Saturn from the current Mars points.
All of these factors are made even more productive through the Saturn sextile Pluto. Saturn and Pluto in sextile show a powerful building energy, so whatever is lost is sure to make the emerging life structures more secure and stable, though it may take a while so will require a broader view of what can be done and when. All will see what is resistant to change in their lives, but also a longer view of what can be done in what sequence.
This also happens to increase Jupiter’s influence in this Lunation, since Saturn is in a very powerful triseptile to Jupiter, adding another layer of irrational, “fork in the road of destiny” energy to the next 4 weeks. Last month Jupiter was the focus of the very powerful Yod, or “Finger of God” I wrote about extensively at the time.
That squeezed a lot out of our lives so we could refocus on whatever Jupiter in Gemini indicates in our charts. Those sacrifices that helped us expand in some way have now led us to a major turning point in the Sag, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces areas of our lives via the house affairs where we have Gemini and Scorpio.
This Lunation adds Venus in Capricorn to the equation, since even though it's separating, it's still part of the mix. That makes this a very powerful and “destiny producing” New Moon since it adds Taurus and Libra areas to those being affected in major ways. Most affected are 6-8 Gemini, 27-29 Cancer, 18-20 Virgo, 10-12 Scorpio, 2-4 Capricorn, 23-25 Aquarius, and 14-16 Aries.
Neptune and Chiron at the Cusp of the Age:
I’ve given you this information in previous New Moon articles, but I figure it’s so important for all of us that it bears repeating once a month. We stand on the threshold of an entirely new era that will not resemble the old Age in any way within just a few decades. In fact, we’re already solidly in the Dreamscape, and are already seeing long wave manifestations of the ending of the old and the emerging field we’re all learning how to maneuver through.
Other than the brief look we had in mid-2011, this is only the twelfth New Moon with Neptune in Pisces for the next 150 years. We had Neptune in Pisces for the 3 New Moons for May, June, and July 2011 which gave us a front end look at how Neptune will function through 2025.
Between August 2011, when Neptune retrograded back into late Aquarius, and the January 2012 New Moon, we were given one last look back at a greater ideal, and the changes of the last half of 2011 helped many to break out of our "chrysalis" and transform how we live and all our relationships. That is now established in the collective consciousness, as well as a growing sense of the larger light field in which all sentient Beings live and love.
If you want to know what's coming for many years to come, take a look back at the intuitions and sense of belonging to a vaster interrelated whole you were shown in May, June, and July 2011. It may help to give a sense of our collective lesson in dissolving our separateness as we finish this transition through "the Winter of the 21st Century" on our way to Spring, beginning in 2025!
During those months that both Neptune and Chiron were in early Pisces, we were offered chances to learn about bargaining and trade-offs, with the ultimate payoff a deeper and larger feeling of being connected to others. During the last half of 2011, Neptune retrograded back to 29 Aquarius, the degree where humanity was forced to emerge from its "chrysalis" as a new world is being born.
Chiron retrograded back to 1 Pisces. So those two dancing together kept us attuned to elements of this transitional span of experience for all of 2011 as we prepared to cut loose into the Neptune in Pisces era for many years to come. During 2011 both Neptune and Chiron revealed our unique part to play within a larger light/life field.
During that time, these planets at the beginning of Pisces and end of Aquarius occupied degrees representing "the Cusp of the Age," the span where the Age of Pisces and the Age of Aquarius meet. From one point of view, where we were collectively between February 2011 and March 2012 revealed what the period of (approximately) 1990-2140 is all about in the broader context of human evolution. I suspect that future generations will look back at 2011 and 2012 as being crucial in showing long range patterns of larger evolutionary necessities.
Neptune and Chiron dancing between signs on "the Cusp of the Age" had the effect of making it seem like we have all been occupying a very weird dreamscape which we'll be navigating for years to come. The trick for us is to apply our new strengths and understanding freed from the ghosts of the past, and by riding the waves of intense (but curiously steady) pulses of spiritual energies shaping our minds, we can find techniques where our efforts will lead us to forms of good fortune.
During the year they danced together in this critical degree span, they provided us a bridge to understanding the global lessons we all must embrace, and helped us graduate into a new view of how we are an essential part of a greater whole. I'll give you links to articles explaining more about "the cusp of the Age" at the end of this article.
As Neptune just went stationary direct at 1 Pisces around the time of the last New Moon Solar Eclipse in Scorpio, Neptune is literally at the “Cusp of the Age,” while Chiron is now at 7 Pisces. This will help us heal anew through our positioning within collective consciousness, standing on our truth as we know it. In this chart Neptune has now moved forward to 2 Pisces, bringing echoes of the need for protection from “unnecessarily aggressive social elements.” We first learned the need for these protective energies in March 2012, got a retrograde look at them in August and September 2012, and now can move forward with an awareness of how we need these, and what they look like.
Chiron shows us how we can heal into our Higher Self. During 2012 the focus was on healing into our Higher Selves through seeing what we’re dedicated to, what skills we’ve cultivated, what “call” we’ve heard, and how we’ve quickened our striving.
Since May, we’ve had to deal with symbolic “traffic jams” in the collective consciousness, and gotten a new look via Neptune’s retrograde into the indestructible elements of our personalities. Through “a conscious handling of existence,” we have caught glimpses elements of our immortal self while “flying by the seat of our pants,” demonstrating a mastery of obscure conditions and growing into a new consecration.
During the next 4 weeks we can heal through seeing how to concentrate on our values as we move through “the chaos of outer living.” We can find “the clear light of high realization,” but will also have to accept certain reasonable “life limits.” From here we move forward into a life renewal from “hearing the call,” and will know our indestructible elements of our Being by March. From here Neptune moves forward!
More About Saturn's Universally Important Influence
Though not as prominent as when it was the nozzle for all the other planetary energies in 2012, we'll continue to put a spotlight on Saturn in Scorpio, the cosmic timekeeper, since it does symbolize the ongoing lessons and limitations within the larger field of existence. Saturn was in Libra through early October 2012, making this the fourth New Moon of the Saturn in Scorpio era!
What we learned from Saturn in Virgo in 2007-2009, returning briefly in 2010, has been of importance in last Autumn’s Virgo New Moon. We learned a lot about how to apply those lessons in forms of practical action when Mars transited Virgo between November 2011 and July 2012.
We showed our skill in applying Saturn in Libra lessons since then while Mars was in Libra in July and August 2012, and had the light of understanding put on those lessons after the recent Libra New Moon. As a side note, Mars in early Scorpio the last week of August and first week of September gave us a front end practice related to Saturn being in that span of Scorpio from October 2012 through October 2013, so review what you were doing, since it symbolizes ongoing and coming Saturn lessons.
Saturn was retrograde in late Libra between early February and mid-June 2012. During the first 9 months of 2012, we were reviewing how to repair or reconstruct things from the past to come to a philosophical completion. The year between October 2011 and 2012 was about coming to a holistic philosophical view based in a life renewal, learning to read meanings in symbols and things, and moving beyond knowledge into true balanced understanding.
As Saturn rules the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Pluto in this chart, it shows that when we are confronted with the need to deal with something or someone in an organized, efficient manner, reference Saturn in Scorpio and the lessons of focusing intensity, feeling what needs to be eliminated to achieve emotional stability or movement, and being efficient and truthful in getting to the core of any matter. Naturally, the usual Saturn keywords will be crucial to effective behavior - patience, discipline, organization, patience, structure, maturity, patience, understanding, wisdom, patience, authority, responsibility, and of course, patience.
So as you open to the first New Moon of 2013, take stock of what larger holistic understanding you’ve achieved in 2012. See how you’ve moved from a theoretical ideal to a new way of living your life and relationships into a deeper connection with your ability to regenerate productively over the long haul, or a deeper communion with some inner or outer element of your Being.
In 2011 we learned about karmic consequences from a wider angle of view, while playing by the rules of whatever system we were dealing with, or acting within. We were challenged to show as much balance, grace, and equipoise as we could, given Saturn's penchant for heaviness.
We all learned a lot about how we use Libra energy to fulfill Dharma during Saturn's stay in Libra, as well as what we should not be trying to prop up through a misplaced sense of responsibility or obligation. As with all Saturn lessons, when we ran into roadblocks or delays it was teaching us about patience, as well as what limitations and burdens we could and could not live with.
As noted in previous articles, Saturn ushered in allies, friends, fellow truth-seekers, more balanced views, and corrective actions as techniques for community building or group awareness during the time it was in Libra. The transfigurations in our actions and relationships we went through between January 2011 and October 2012 led us to do forms of "repair work," where we confronted the consequences of past actions, whether our own or another's. The repair work could as easily been in the realm of our inner self as in outer affairs.
Saturn in this Lunation chart is at 11 Scorpio, the next one of many to come with Saturn in Scorpio. We have finished our understanding in life areas related to Libra, Capricorn, and Aquarius in our charts which are now going through a Scorpio experience of an intensification of magnetics to attract what we need and repel what is not needed. Saturn in Scorpio will be a MUCH different manifestation of Saturn than we were used to these past 2 ½ years!!
A Little More About the Recent Past As Prologue
When Venus first transited the Gemini zone of the Grand Irrationality in the third and fourth week of April, it triggered that long wave influence, as well as set off echoes of the Gemini Solar Eclipse of June 2011 which also fell in the Gemini zone of that powerful configuration. We went through the second phase of that influence with more “irrational” destiny-producing developments (which could be good or bad, depending) when it next occupied 14-18 Gemini, as well as when Mercury and the Sun also transited this zone, between May 31 and June 10, 2012.
We saw further major developments related to these “forks in the road of destiny” allowing us to be liberated from the ghosts of the past in the last half of July. Now Jupiter is and will continue to be close to the Eclipse degree through Spring 2013, so we were definitely in a zone of major teachings, opportunities, or some other Jupiter expression this past Autumn through late November, with final exams to come in April and early May 2013. Prepare for major developments!
What’s of importance is that Jupiter will now liberate and bless the ideas and views we came to value between April and July 2012. Also, in late November and early December 2012 Jupiter was triseptile Saturn from the same signs as this Lunation, so consider this the next and final step in that collective interactive destiny producing period.
The Grand Irrationality
The Grand Irrationality is finally NOT a direct influence during this Lunation due to no planetary aspects setting it off!! Enjoy the breather, since we went through a long string of Lunations involving planets triggering the Grand Irrationality in 2012. And of course, it will be activated as the transits move through any and all of the 7 “hot zones” created by Neptune septile Pluto. Next period of activation (other than by the Moon) began the first week of January, and occurs again the middle of January via Venus and the beginning of February via Mars.
Though it’s not in major play as a function of the New Moon, a bit of explanation about this thing called “the Grand Irrationality” may serve to help new readers understand why everything continues to be so weird. As I’ve explained many times before, the Grand Irrationality is a long wave non-rational influence that has put everyone on Earth on the unceasing edge of major choice and change, confronting inner compulsions and outer irrational behaviors. It is why things seem to have an unending hard edge, why so many choices are continually thrown in our faces that require immediate attention, and why reason seems to fail at critical moments of decision.
When the Grand Irrationality is in play, it’s a time when things don’t have to make sense. Get used to it, since we’ve been living with it for about 17 years, and will for a few more years to come.
The only thing that matters is that we learn how to ride this ever-changing wave of very strange and weird human experience, and not get lost in our own obsessions, compulsions, and the general irrationality of our times. I recently posted a thorough explanation of this phenomenon in 21st Century Astrology – What is the Grand Irrationality and Why is Everything So Weird? Please re-visit that article to understand more about this recurring energy affecting the collective atmosphere.
The 2011 Gemini Solar Eclipse that triggered the Grand Irrationality for years to come has liberated all of us from some elements and ghosts of our past, freeing us from old preconceptions and chains of mental slavery. That intense activation of June 2011 has shown as hectic intense bursts that often made no sense during the past 18 months, and the current “off and on” patterns of other planets in irrational relationships, in this chart Mars septile Uranus and Jupiter triseptile Saturn, is forcing us to choose wisely.
We have now been challenged to find ways to liberate ourselves from unhelpful views and attitudes while staying on track with the new elements arising from the numerous conjunctions to Jupiter in Aries that have presented themselves over the past 20+ months. In this Lunation, Jupiter continues to bring us information, understanding, higher perspectives, and different Spiritual awareness while it occupies Gemini.
Jupiter last went direct in motion December 2011, launching our 2012 Jupiterian adventure. We finished substantiating and confirming some things the first 5+ months of 2012, and since then we’ve all had opportunities to open to larger ideas, larger opportunities, larger understanding, and larger futures.
We acquired some of the assets we needed while Jupiter was in Taurus from June 2011 through June 2012, and stabilized a growth pattern. We did a review and consolidated these things the last half of 2011, and were able to move forward in 2012, even though this involved multiple Mercury, Venus, and Mars retrograde periods through the first 7 months of the year.
So things became more solid and stable between February and June 2012, after which new worlds and new discoveries opened. Now we’ve gotten a lot of information about what we need to learn or understand related to the new archetypes we began to live in 2010-2011. With Jupiter retrograde, we’ve been in a several month period where we’ve gotten new insights into new knowledge and awareness of how to incorporate the discoveries since June into our lives.
Now we continue our emotional, social, and cultural discoveries, and have just finished a 3+ month review of how we’re relating to energy and whether we’re being passive or active in how we use it to steer a course to our liking. By the next New Moon, Jupiter will be direct, again giving us a favorable tide with which to launch our new idea of using skill to find that which sustains our efforts.
This Lunation shows us how to claim our humanitarian tendencies, and if we’re out beyond our depth, either come back or be brought back to shore. This is a turning point, where what we’ve been eliminating or repairing that decayed in the past now has led us into unfamiliar realms, where we will see who we belong with and who we don’t.
Keep letting go and releasing the past. This period opens new views at the beginning of a new adventure in claiming power through surrendering to a higher quality of being. There may be apparent “defeats” that spell true spiritual victory, and show us how we can “conquer through conforming to some established norm.”
So get focused and clear about what forms are worthwhile and which need eliminating or purifying. Due to the recent Scorpio Solar Eclipse, we’ve been looking back to rehearse the future after eliminating elements of the past. This opened the doors that we walked through in late December that continue through January. Be willing to embrace the purification process, especially purifying the life of stuck feelings and desires, and open to a new game and a new way of playing that game.
As briefly noted earlier, the line of growth is through understanding magnetism in a more focused, active way. Here we get a depth understanding of the structural strengths and weaknesses in things, people, plans, and arguments, and show us how to relax into enjoying life a little more than we have in the past.
With North Node still in late Scorpio, our greatest development is through our ability to eliminate, regenerate, attract, and repel as part of a greater effectiveness. Consider this as a time of learning more from our losses than what we hold on to. How we grow now will pay major dividends once Saturn moves into the second half of Scorpio at the end of 2013. As with the past few months, this will be a time of powerful and deep feelings, shifts, insights, and rehearsals of new possibilities of future exploration, and a time to transcend whoever we use to think we were.
We have some extraordinary aspects forming in this Lunation, which I'll speak about in the next part of this series. The major influences are the Sun and Moon sesquisquare Jupiter, and quintile Saturn and Uranus, which Mercury will help us understand and better coordinate when it crosses the Lunation degree in a few days. Other forming aspects of note are Venus square Uranus conjunct Pluto, Mars septile Uranus, Jupiter triseptile Saturn and sextile Uranus, Saturn biquintile Uranus, and the ever-present radical transformational energy of Uranus square Pluto.
In the next part of the series we'll discuss the various aspects at play in the chart, as well as some important degree symbols and other interesting elements affecting all of us for 4 weeks to come.

you are on a roll today. great article! i love the way synchronicity works. i woke up today looking at things differently but it's really nothing new. just a reminder from my higher self. i have north node in 14º Cap (12th house) and a whole bunch of Cancer stuff (Sun Moon etc.) with the south node. have to work on Capricorn qualities i think. i started doing yoga again this week for no particular reason. it just came to me one morning. like Forrest Gump. i just felt like it. i think there's a connection here. a new moon, a new start. thanks again and namaste. :)

Act of saturn: I felt that article was interesting, but "heavy". Need to have a nap/good night sleep before understanding it.
I like the start though. And will read the end also.
But this is my irrationality. Brains don't understand all. I wish things will get more clear at summer. I am waiting for the triangle; Neptunus - Jupiter - Saturn (in water signs). I wish little more understanding: Time should tell.

Robert:
Once again the quantity and quality of the information that you so freely share here is phenomenal! Thank you so much. One question-"As it falls in Capricorn, Saturn and Uranus rule the Lunation." I thought that Uranus had higher octave rulership over Aquarius. I had not heard that it had rulership over Capricorn.

Hi all - Thanks for your praise of this article. Glad it helps.
Hi dcu - The way I look at the zodiac, we have ancient rulers that still hold for worldly things. With the discovery of the almost invisible or invisible outer quartet (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, Transpluto) we also have spiritual rulers of the signs. So Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius in this world, Uranus rules these signs in the transcendent world. Jupiter rules Sag and Pisces in this world, and Neptune rules these signs in the transcendent world. Mars rules Aries and Scorpio in this world, and Pluto rules these signs in the transcendent world. You can wing it from there. ;-)
