In 2014, October 23 is Diwali, “The Festival of Lights.” This is one of the holiest days in India, devoted to Lakshmi, one of the manifestations of Divine Mother.
This 5 day festival begins this year on October 21, and the 4th day of Diwali (Oct 24) marks the start of the Hindu New Year. It honors the victory of good over evil, and brightness over darkness. Diwali is celebrated in honor of Lord Rama and his wife Sita returning to their kingdom of Ayodhya, following Rama and monkey god Hanuman’s defeating the demon King Ravana and rescue of Sita from his evil clutches.
This is an important holiday dedicated to Lakshmi (if you don't know who this manifestation of Divine Mother is, look her up!!) From Wiki: "For Hindus, Diwali is one of the most important festivals of the year and is celebrated in families by performing traditional activities together in their homes. For Jains, Diwali marks the attainment of moksha or nirvana by Mahavira in 527 BC. Arya Samajists, celebrate this day as Death Anniversary of Swami Dayanand Saraswati. They also celebrate this day as Shardiya Nav-Shasyeshti."
So it seems hundreds of millions are celebrating this time as one of victory of good over evil, when we can set the intention for all good things to come our way via Divine Mother. By all means, go for it!!

ps - I should also add that the Islamic New Year (1436 #Hijri) begins the evening of Friday, October 24, and ends the evening of Saturday October 25, making this Eclipse important in describing the coming year. Of course, it will also be a background influence for every "New Year" that happens for the next 4 years!!
