Yesterday I offered that I was asked a question why people with the same Sun sign could be radically different people. We explored how a planet in the same sign but a different decan (third) of that sign indicates a huge difference in how that planet expresses. Today we’ll explore the second half of my answer, where we’ll examine the place of dispositor, as well as other factors, in how any give Sun sign expresses itself.
In our example, we discussed Sun in Scorpio. Since Scorpio is ruled by Mars, the sign that Mars is in will profoundly affect how a Sun in Scorpio expresses itself. For example, a Scorpio with Mars in Taurus will show radically different Solar characteristics than a Scorpio with Mars in Virgo, or Sagittarius.
This is why looking at various planetary dispositors is so crucial in understanding how any given planet expesses itself. As I’ve explained in my Lunation articles, the planet ruling the sign any planet is in sets the "backdrop" for that planet's energies. In our example, a Scorpio with Taurus background will be much more stubborn than a Scorpio with a Sagittarius backdrop, who is apt to be more open but less focused.
This principle can be applied to all the planets. The Moon is our personal way of feeling our immediate experience. A person with Moon in Libra seeks harmony, beauty, and idealism in their day to day life. However, a Moon in Libra with Venus (Libra's ruler) in Virgo will have a much different way of pursuing and defining their day to day beauty and harmony than someone with a Venus in Aries.
We often find situations in a chart where a planet is in its home sign, such as Jupiter in Sagittarius, or Venus in Taurus or Libra. Any planet in its home sign is its own dispositor. Other examples of these are Moon in Cancer, Mars in Aries or Scorpio, and so forth. You can find the various planetary rulerships in the April 2016 article Astrology Class - The Rulership and Exile Positions of the Planets.
As I offered yesterday, another crucial thing to remember when it comes to differences in how a Sun sign expresses itself is the fact that some people are not "living their light" of their Sun sign, but are more emphasized along the lines of their Moon, or Jupiter, or Saturn, or some other planet. The Sun sign is one's light, integrity, power, and sense of integration. It represents how we are illuminated, and how we illuminate others.
How many people are actually doing this, consciously or unconsciously? Most people seem to be more intent on living their Moon, i.e., their habits, feelings, and reflective consciousness than their radiant consciousness of their Sun. The Sun may be "who we are," but the Moon is the package we create out of our habits, feelings, reflections, and protective responses.
There is also the important consideration that from year to year, Mars, Jupiter and sometimes Saturn occupy a different sign than they did the year before. A Sun in Scorpio with a Jupiter in Scorpio will express their light much differently than a Scorpio with Jupiter in Libra or Sagittarius. A Sun in Scorpio with Saturn in Pisces will take a much different attitude toward duties and responsibilities than a Scorpio with Saturn in Taurus.
This is why we have to take other things into consideration when it comes to how any given planet in any given sign might express the traits of those signs. One of these factors is to examine which planet is the most important in the Jones' Pattern of the chart. In this case, if that key planet in the pattern is Jupiter, the chart could wind up showing the world more of those traits than their Sun.
We also have to take into account that a huge influence in how our Sun sign expresses itself is based in the planet that precedes the Sun, since that is what leads into our Solar response, and conditions how we express that Light according to the nature of that leading planet. Someone with Venus just in front of the Sun will express their Light in a much different way than one with Uranus leading their Sun!
As you can see, there are a host of factors that play important parts in how our Sun, or Moon, or any other planet expresses itself. It’s all part of the multi-dimensional art/science of Astrology!
