45 years ago today on June 23, 1972, Title IX was signed into law in the US. That allowed equal rights for women to compete in college sports and ended gender discrimination in education, changing the world forever.
From Wiki, Title IX was part of the Equal Opportunity in Education Act that states "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity." It started with LBJ, and was introduced by Senator Birch Bayh of Indiana. From there women secured a bunch of civil and legal rights they hadn't had before then.
So here's a "tip of the hat" to the politicians who did the right thing a long time ago! Now if only we could get our present day politicians to do the right thing by us all....
