The New Moon at 1 Leo Pt. 2 - Signs, Sabian Symbols, and What It All Means

This article covers significant aspects, degree symbols, and other important factors in this Leo New Moon chart. This Lunation offers us forceful creative/expressive outbursts, a lot of high energy and specialization, and for many, different forms of beauty. This Lunation throws everything forward with great gusto!

As you understand by now, different times give us different Jones Patterns, depending on the position of the Moon and the inner planets relative to the outer planets. These patterns operate their own independent influence, regardless of which planet is in which sign.

Currently, the outer planet occupied span begins with Jupiter in Libra, and proceeds through planets in Sagittarius, Capricorn, Pisces, and Aries. This is a hemispheric distribution, with all the planets in almost half the signs. That means past patterns have been mainly influenced by the position of the inner planets, shifting the pattern every so often.

This New Moon brings us to a Splay pattern, since we have a widespread distribution based in an anchoring tripod of the Grand Fire Trine! So for a while, we’re out of the Bucket and Locomotive patterns dominating past months, and enter into the very powerful energies of the Splay.

So What is a “Splay Pattern” and how does it work?

This month is fairly spread out in terms of planets in signs, since the 10 planets occupy 7 signs and are fairly spread out around the zodiacal wheel. This type of spread, with all the planets in odd angles to each other with differing distributions among the signs, creates a “Splay” Jones Pattern. As Marc Jones put it, “the arrangement is neither even nor symmetrical,” revealing “strong and sharp aggregations of the planets at irregular points.”

Dr. Jones states “This suggests highly individual or purposeful emphases in the life, where the temperament juts out into experiences according to its own very special tastes.” This pattern “makes its own anchorage in existence,” and has a quality of “rugged resistance to pigeonholing, either in the near conventional compartments of nature, or in the idea-pockets of associates.”

He goes on to state this pattern gives a “persistent emphasis on individuality,” and the “spokelike emphases of the planetary groupings” are random, but have a “tripod” footing and approach to life circumstances. He says this pattern “reveals a very intensive personality who cannot be limited to any single steady point of application.” This temperament is “particular and impersonal in its interests,” rather than “universal-impersonal” or “particular-personal.”

This implies that affairs will be diversely spread out, some will not mesh well with others, and there will be a “hub and spoke" quality to what happens these next 4 weeks. This spread shows a wide diversity of things going on that promotes individuality.

In this New Moon, the most intense occupied span (in this chart the Lunation plus Mars) is 3 planets in 1+ degrees, making that the major focus. Adding Venus and Mercury as the bookends, the expanded specific emphasis is the span between Venus at 21 Gemini and Mercury at 27 Leo. This involves 5 planets in 66+ degrees, showing a lot of activity wherever it falls in our chart.

This month we have the 10 traditional planets occupying 7 signs, showing a widespread distribution with an intense cluster noted above. This month we have Libra, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Pisces, Aries, Gemini, and Leo represented, with no planet in the other signs.

The Sabian Symbol for the New Moon

A New Moon sets the seed forms for what the following month will demonstrate. This Lunation falls at 1 Leo. It is said that the first third (decan) of any sign deals with the actional, physical, material levels of life, and being the first decan of Leo it has a sub-influence of Leo. While I've given you a sense of this degree up to now, this is where we go into depth.

The symbol for the 1st degree of Leo is “A case of apoplexy.” In the original notes from the Marc Jones class on the symbols, Rudhyar ways this is a degree of “A basic symbol of Man: forceful, dangerous entrance into the Soul realm,” “irresistible outpouring of self,” and “Activity per se.”

In the Mandala he goes on to say this is a degree of "an irruption of bio-psychic energies into the ego-controlled field of consciousness,” and states this symbols is related to Solar Fire, one of the three “divine Fires.” This is the fire that is “released from an integrated person, either through spontaneous radiations of apparently nuclear forms of energy, or… through conscious emanations” of the mind.

He goes on to offer that “this process is a potentially dangerous one,” where “the realization of Atman, the Spiritual Self,” requires “the existence of a formed and steady ego… (that) can become a lens of pure crystal focusing the all-pervasive cosmic light of the Brahman.” Also that “the transformation of ‘life’ into ‘mind’ is a difficult process.” He offers us the keyword of Conflagration, where “the energies of the biological drives as they irrupt more or less forcefully, into the field of consciousness.” So the illumination available via this New Moon is through the Light of going through some serious irruptions of energy into our lives, where we allow heart Fire to come forth. He states this degree falls in the Span of Assurance, Act of Stabilization, and Scene of Combustion on the Actional level.

Dr. Jones, creator of the Sabian Symbols, says this is a degree of “an overwhelming potentiality, and of an ever-pressing necessity for genuine self-establishment and personal stability.” He says this is about “a lack of inhibition” and an “ability to mobilize all (our) powers and even risk our own existence rather than accept any thwarting of (our) desires.”

He goes on to state that this is about “the unbroken continuity between being and doing, or between identity and its continual manifestation of itself.” He offers the keyword IRRESISTIBILITY, and states when operating positively, the degree is “creativity in the day-by-day expression of the self’s real possibilities.”

So the theme of this New Moon is through the Light of allowing the Light, Life, and Love we ARE to come forth spontaneously, naturally, and creatively. Accept the heart power that will erupt from time to time, and express it in some way that is meaningful to you. This is Solar Fire combusting up and out, for all the world to behold!

Important Aspects

Remember that in reading a Lunation chart (as well as a horary, inceptional, electional, or any event chart) the forming aspects show things to come, while separating aspects show things already past. This section covers only forming aspects.

As mentioned in part 1, the Lunation chart has quite a few favorable aspects, and very few frictional ones. The only two oppositions are a close one from Venus in Gemini to Saturn in Sag, and a wide one from Jupiter in Libra to Uranus in Aries. The main lesson of the former is to be aware of the limits in any relationship, the other ways to interpret the options in a situation, and for those on a threshold of “entering a new land,” adjusting attitude to greet the conditions to come.

The New Moon conjuncts Mars and is quintile Jupiter, promising high specialization through creative and dynamic events for those with planets or angles affected by the quintile. These include 12-18 Libra, 24-30 Sagittarius, 6-12 Pisces, 18-24 Taurus, and 30 Cancer-6 Leo.

Beside those just mentioned, forming inner planet aspects include Mercury semisquare Jupiter, trine Uranus and pentelftile Neptune; Venus is novile the New Moon and Mars, opposition Saturn, trielftile Neptune, and triseptile Pluto (triggering the Grand Irrationality).

Outer planet aspects are a bit thin, and pretty much what we’ve been experiencing for a while. Mars is quintile Jupiter, and Jupiter is bielftile Saturn, opposed Uranus, and square Pluto; Saturn trines Uranus, and Uranus is semisquare to Neptune.

Besides the Gemini-Sag opposition mentioned above, we also have “tensional awareness” as a result of the long term Jupiter opposition Uranus, liberating us into new visions, new truths, new adventures, new ideals, and new ways of being in relationships. This is giving a lot of what IS a hard edge, where the task is to find the balance, perspective, or healthy proportion to keep everything reasonable and harmonious as we make progress.

This opposition is resolved via Saturn in Sag making a trine to Uranus, even though it’s separating, by Jupiter forming the bielftile moving to a sextile with Saturn. This very powerful energy will be with us the next few weeks, with the Saturn trine Uranus triggered with every Grand Fire Trine made by the inner planets. The trine is stabilizing, and the sextile productive. This is helping us stabilize blending the established with the innovative while embracing new ways that will fulfill themselves as Saturn moves forward beginning August.

So while there are some power aspects in play in this New Moon, there are a lot of spiritual aspects. We see 3 quintiles, 3 noviles, 1 triseptile, 1 bielftile, 1 trielftile, and 1 pentelftile.

The novile (9th harmonic), septile (7th harmonic) and elftile (11th harmonic) series all feature spiritual aspects. All novile series aspects represent gestative energies that can lead to great spiritual realizations. Septile series aspects in this New Moon, they represent forks in the road of destiny, while the elftile series aspects represent issues requiring we resolve some sort of duality by making a leap of faith to attain a form of mastery over that type of duality.

The quintile (5th harmonic) and related 10th, 15th, and 20th harmonic aspects are all specialization aspects. Element Balance

Of the traditional 10 planets, there are 6 planets in Fire signs, 1 in Water, 1 in Earth, and 2 in Air. This indicates the element spread heavily emphasizes inspiration (Fire) fed by relatedness/communication (Air), and a “balanced deficiency” of practicality (Earth) and feeling/experiencing (Water). The Air serves the Fire, as Venus rules Jupiter and is ruled by Mercury in Leo.

Air and Earth are “cool” elements, while Fire and Water are “hot” elements. With this distribution, things will be extremely hot, with lots of inspired interactions and ideas. Again, with the harmonious Fire trine, shine the Love brightly, and joyously adapt, allowing Soul force to come up naturally and spontaneously.

Because Venus leads the Sun from Gemini, keep it simple and steady, cultivate your garden of life and mind, and show care for what you value. This is the time to allow your imagination to come forth spontaneously, or at the very least, embrace your natural enthusiasm and/or creativity. We continue to be in a unique and inspired time, with great opportunities to make new inner and outer connections.

The current sequence at present of Deciding, Feeling, and Thinking

We’ve been through several different sequences over the past few months. There are six patterns, and each has their strengths and weaknesses. We’re now in yet another pattern. As a process of moving through events, this New Moon has shifted again, showing that over the next 4 weeks the most effective “firing sequence” for approaching life and experience involves first feeling our way into decisions and actions. After we decide and/or act, it will be important to get new information to come to a new vision or understanding. Once we get the right view or understanding, then a new feeling-experience will naturally arise that points the way to the next action.

So over the next 4 weeks we’ll still be leading with our feelings, then making decisions on the basis of those feeling experiences, followed by new information, new ideas, new interpretations, and new views. We’ll be “feeling our way” into new experiences, then deciding and acting on the basis of those feelings. After a decision or action, then we’ll have to find newer, more up to date information, facts, and understanding so we can get a new vision.

So learn and teach through anecdotes, seeing how others handled things practically, or how you handed things practically in the past. Let your thinking and communicating and envisioning follow your actions, and let your feelings follow a new understanding, a new perception, or a new view.

Summing Up

This is a time when many things will burst forth, whether creatively or related to work that must be done to repair some things. Beauty is there to behold and/or create, and this can be an extraordinarily loving time for those who let their heart fire come up and out! The past is gone, and the future beckons!

Be as playful as you can be, and don’t get bugged if you can’t do something, go somewhere, or connect with someone. As I noted earlier, any who are “quarantined” should focus on playing creatively with others, seeing the “constructive results of the inconveniences of life.”

Things may seem off balance somewhat, but if you can find the right “rhythm of response,” then you can glide between different activities without getting hung up by any one thing. Remember the Splay throws activity into diverse and often unrelated areas, so stay on your center as you move between different arenas of life. There is a lot of work to be done, so do it joyously, with an eye to the beauty of the work being performed.

This accelerates the heart Fire of this “Summer of Love 2017,” so be more outgoing, make connections, interact with those who share your Spiritual Lights, and be forceful in projecting your love and creativity into your world. Inspiration is up, relatedness is up, and there are elements of the Soul realm that will erupt into ego consciousness, demanding their due. Be loving, be beautiful, and you too could find power!

Thank you Robert. It's all quite fascinating, like a weather report! The picture I get is that we are all going to start behaving like the Sun - our solar flares will be bursts of creativity, etc.,! After reading this, I learned that there had been a massive far side solar flare which is on its way to Mars 1859 style!
