This Lunar Eclipse will be extraordinarily beneficial, with a lot of productive harmony and stability as we open to “the joy and power of new beginnings.” We have trained to manifest a new ideal, and as old ways shut down these next few months, Uranus offers us gifts and blessings for embracing spiritual individualization!
This stabilizing, synthesizing, creative Full Moon moving us into greater futures and clearer understanding about obligations occurs on August 7 at 11:11 am PDT, 2:11 pm EDT, and 7:11 pm BST and falls at the 16th degree of Aquarius and Leo. As with all Full Moons, this one gives us the ability to use the light of the spontaneity, beauty, and inspired ideas and vision you’ve been seeing and expressing since the New Moon, and give it form and focus through expressing the understanding and contentment with our natural role we’ve glimpsed since the New Moon.
Today’s Full Moon post will be an overview of the Lunation and some of its primary qualities. In parts 3 and 4 we’ll cover the Sabian Symbols, aspects, distributions, and patterns.
An Overview
This Full Moon partial Eclipse in Leo-Aquarius will take away all that would inhibit us from expressing the love, beauty, and power we’ve been riding like a wave since the New Moon. This period will be highly active, and we’ll all take a new look at our societal obligations and see which ones we’ve outgrown, and which ones beckon us to a new playfulness and creativity!
This chart, unlike the last Full Moon, as almost NO challenging aspects, and so I expect this to be a period of major productivity, harmony, and understanding of solid inspired patterns allowing Electric Fire to come forth in unique and stable ways. This one allows us to see what our hearts are into, and express it in efficient ways that prepare us for actions that initiate a greater contribution to our world.
In past months, we’ve received Ageless Wisdom, let go of the past, had a revelation of a new quality of Being rendering the old patterns obsolete, and had old ideas melt down as we reoriented toward new forms of personal “survival.” The New Moon got us into a new groove of spontaneity, creativity, and/or play, and now we just have to release all that would inhibit our natural expression of love. After demonstrating responsible and disciplined responses after the last Full Moon, it would seem this one gives us a “play break!”
We’ve now moved into a time period of shifting Jones pattern. The patterns change mainly due to the position of the Moon, and at this Full Moon, we’ve again returned to an obvious “See Saw” pattern, even if it does have elements of a “Splay” as well as “Splash” patterns. I’ll explain more later in this article.
Though the Sun is in the sign it rules, the Moon is in a sign ruled by Saturn, again bringing Saturn into power. I’ll discuss the chain of dispositors in another article. Mars in Leo now leads the Sun, making this a HIGHLY energetic period. This Full Moon will pull a lot together, and provide many with a genuine sense of the ability to express natural emotions in productive actions.
Is the Grand Irrationality A Factor in this Full Moon?
The Grand Irrationality, along with the other outer planet non-rational configurations that happen off and on throughout the year, indicate that we’ve been living in an era of very heavy decisions determining the future destiny of humanity since 1993. To refresh you, the Grand Irrationality is a long wave configuration set into motion every time a planet makes a conjunction, septile, biseptile, or triseptile to Neptune and Pluto. Septile series aspects show us points in time when our future destiny is precipitated by critical choices made in the present.
In this Full Moon, though the Sun just finished its triseptile to Pluto and is in a very wide forming triseptile to Neptune, Mars is making a very close triseptile to Pluto. This promises that recent transits triggering major events putting humanity at a major fork in the road of its destiny will continue to be a huge focus thanks to Mars energizing everything! After this, Venus will finish this set of Leo transits making double triseptiles to Neptune and Pluto during the first 2 weeks of September, after which the Libra transits trigger a triseptile to Neptune and a biseptile to Pluto.
At this time, the current seven “hot zone” spans that trigger the Grand Irrationality are approximately 13-17 Leo, 5-9 Libra, 27 Scorpio-1 Sagittarius, 18-22 Capricorn, 10-14 Pisces, 1-5 Taurus, and 22-26 Gemini.
We’re now slowly moving out of the configuration, and we’ve already hit a point in time when Neptune and Pluto are beginning to form a long term sextile, as they were for most of the last half of the 20th century. At this time, the Grand Irrationality gains strength as we move through Autumn and into Winter, and will again lessen in strength in the late Winter into the Spring and Summer.
As I’ve explained in other articles, that means that in the Autumn and Winter (in the Northern Hemisphere) they operate as a simultaneous “pulse,” since they’re both aspected near the same time. But in the Spring and Summer we experience it as a rolling influence, with first Pluto aspected, and then Neptune at some time after that, depending on which planet is doing the aspect to these planets.
Because this configuration involves Neptune and Pluto, the outermost spiritual planets, they show a long wave evolutionary crisis for the entire human race. Since 1993, at one point or another, everyone on Earth has experienced a nonstop energy of having to choose, at the bottom of our beings, the path to evolution or devolution, progress or regress, love or fear, joy or control. It’s why things have been so weird, irrational, and hard-edged.
Planetary Distribution
In this Full Moon, the span occupied by the inner planets (in this chart Venus in early Cancer through Mercury in mid-Virgo) spans 62+ degrees. Within this span, the most intense cluster is the 28+ degrees between Mars and Mercury. As Mercury goes retrograde soon and Venus continues to catch up to Mars, we’ll again have significant clusters in a very narrow span. The span of Cancer, Leo, and Virgo will be very active these next two weeks, as well as the next few months during the time the Eclipse effects are made manifest.
At this time we have the 10 traditional planets occupying 8 signs, in an extremely widespread distribution, which is why this has elements of a both “Splash” (widespread distribution) and “Splay” (tripod emphasis via the Grand Fire Trine) Jones patterns. Currently, the occupied span begins with Jupiter in Libra, then Saturn in Sagittarius, then Pluto in Capricorn, through planets in Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Cancer, Leo, and Virgo. However, because there are FOUR axes of opposition, I am calling this a “See Saw,” where the “tension of opposites” is active across 2/3 of our entire reality.
What is a “Seesaw Pattern” and how does it work?
This type of spread, with two or more planets on one side of the map and the others on the other side of the map, with at least one or two oppositions to define the axis of awareness, creates a “Seesaw” Jones Pattern. Where a Seesaw pattern is present, stay focused and balanced at the center while taking note of the periphery of things, and don't get off on a tangent or limb.
This pattern shows a need to be able to see both sides of any given thing, especially where there are opposing trends or views. The strength is in an ability to triangulate to angles of approach beyond the polarity that allows for progress and understanding.
As Marc Jones put it, “it reveals a less-sharpened but much more definite balancing of life emphases at opposing or contrasting points in experience. It is a persistent move to a balance which is apt to give a characteristic rhythm… The indication is not so much an uncertainly of action, or reaction, as a tendency to act at all times under a consideration of opposing views or through a sensitiveness to contrasting and antagonistic possibilities.”
He continues “the Seesaw temperament has its existence in a world of conflicts, of definite polarities. It is capable of unique achievement, through a development of unsuspected relations in life, but it is also apt to waste its energies through its improper alignment with various situations.”
He states that the ideal will show oppositions around the middle of the opposing “planetary aggregates” (clusters) and that axis will be the “focal determinator.” But, “if no such emphasis is present, the life tends to be significant at the side of the greater number of planets, or sometimes where they are concentrated most closely.”
Again, this chart has more oppositions than any other chart in recent memory. We have an opposition in Cancer and Capricorn (Venus/Pluto), Leo and Aquarius (Sun/Moon), Virgo and Pisces (Mercury/Neptune), and Libra and Aries (Jupiter and Uranus.) As the first and last in this list are wide, the Eclipse axis is the focus of the Seesaw tendencies, but it still will show as a tensional awareness of the span occupied by the personal planets (Cancer through Libra) in opposition to transpersonal planets (Capricorn through Aries) with the Moon opposed Sun as the focus of expression harmonizing with Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus.
Is the Sun Following the Moon, or the Moon Following the Sun?
This is the final Lunation for many months where the Full Moon Sun falls in the same sign as the Sun of the previous New Moon. This is the fifteenth Full Moon echoing the pattern we had between September 2013 and September 2014. After that, between October 2014 and May 2016 we had a “reversed pattern” of the Sun of the Full Moon occupying the sign after the New Moon Sun.
This finishes the year of the “natural” order of Lunation Suns, since the last New Moon Sun was in Leo, and this Full Moon Sun is also in Leo. Since the New Moon offers us seeds in the first half of the month’s lunar cycle, and fulfillment in the second half, we now finish the sequence with the “Seed Light” of Leo that will come to a Full Moon illumination through the current Sun in Leo and Moon in Aquarius.
Because the New Moon preceding the Full Moon always represents the seed forms that are brought to surface at and after the Full Moon, this begins the fulfillment of the theme of the recent New Moon at 1 Leo. The New Moon seeds helped a new spontaneity come forth, as well as gifts of “repair and reconstruction” work helping us see how the past yielded our present. Again, now that we’ve been “quarantined” from something for a couple of weeks, we now can see our new beginnings, and in releasing the past, we are released to initiate new activities in our lives wherever we have Leo in our charts.

Saturn: Spiritual Master, Spiritual Friend
Because Saturn is important as the ruler of the Moon in this Lunation and a stable leg of the Fire trines happening during the current season, opening up huge love energies via the transits through Leo, it’s a great time for seeing how to blend past and future together and craft your future destiny. Then you’ll be ready to stabilize that electric Fire and distributive Fire and express it in loving, creative forms during July and September, when the inner planets move through Leo making Grand Fire trines.
As Jupiter will be in favorable aspect to Saturn for many weeks to come, it’s the key to specializing our Jupiter and Saturn relationship in our charts, and bringing forth gifts appropriate to the houses they occupy and rule. You can learn more about mastering the Saturn and Uranus part of generating your future destiny by taking a look at the material in my book Saturn: Spiritual Master, Spiritual Friend. Saturn helps us give form and structure to our quest for Self-realization, and in Sag, will help bring an “expansive structure” to the Uranian energies infused with concentrated doses of spiritual energy that is making our spiritual life come alive.
Our inner Saturn gives us the power to take command of our lives and destiny. Saturn shows us those things we must master to become spiritual adults and fulfill our purpose for being alive on Earth. By knowing our Saturnian strengths, we can overcome fear and any sense of victimization or powerlessness.
It was written for both astrologers and non-astrologers, and gives the reader the power to understand why some things happened when they did. Throughout the book, it offers ways for us to “make friends” with this part of our existence and take command of our destiny. As you read each chapter, you’ll become more aware of all the factors assisting Soul growth through understanding how our Saturn lessons relate to Dharma (our Highest Spiritual Function) and various types of karma, both those we cause and those which are "Sacred Wounds" leading us to a greater compassion and understanding.
This is a book you will reference many times for many reasons, and each time you pick it up you’re sure to find undiscovered gems of insight on each page. This book can help you throw off all the attitudes and memories which have held you back from finding and living the life and purpose you’ve been searching for since you were young. Welcome to the journey of self-discovery, and finding your power to live your life on your own terms, fulfilling your reason for being alive as an Eternal having human experiences!
