Saturn goes stationary retrograde at 21 Capricorn on April 29 at 5:55 pm PDT, April 30 at 1:55 am BST, and will remain retrograde until mid-September when it will go direct at 14 Capricorn. What does this mean?
First, it means that the Saturn in Capricorn “Master’s Class” we’ve been doing since it entered Capricorn December 2017 has now hit another high water mark, and we will begin to review all the Saturn related things that have come up since January 2019, when Saturn entered its 2019 shadow zone. Since then we’ve gotten a look at the span between 14 and 21 Capricorn, and now get another look at that same span of experience, but from a retrograde angle instead of a direct angle. This span involves the actional, material, and physical level of the Scene of Group Performance, as well as both the individual, mental, and spiritual and the emotional, social, and cultural level of the Scene of Crystallization.
Saturn Structuring Plutonic Seed Forms Waiting For Jupiter's Blessing
The seeds of the current Saturn lessons were sown when Pluto was in this span between March through May 2014, late December 2014 through mid-March 2018 (except for late Sept-early Oct 2015), and late May 2018 through mid-January 2019.
In a curious overlap, Pluto will occupy 21 Capricorn between late August and early November 2019, so we’ll have Saturn crystallizing old Pluto seeds and Pluto purifying and sprouting new Saturn structures during that time. Pluto going SD in October 2019 on Saturn’s SRX April degree will definitely lead to an interactive transformational period from late August through early November this year!
This implies that whatever we’re about to learn from Saturn is directly related to the seeds we set into motion in 2014 which sprouted in 2015, 2016, and 2017. The coming months will determine which of these seeds will develop into mature growth after September. In September, at the end of this journey back through the lessons of time, we’ll find ourselves mature enough, or trained enough, or disciplined enough, to accept the “historical perspective” seeded by Pluto in 2014-2015 to become part of our life structure.
Interestingly, this begins the second phase of a long wave process. Pluto in mid-Capricorn set certain “seed forms;” Saturn is now bringing structure to those seeds. When Jupiter enters Capricorn in December 2019, it will begin an expansive phase of growth for the seed forms we’re structuring this year.
In 2020, it will cross all the points in Capricorn that Saturn will transit this year and next, bringing growth. That year it will conjunct Pluto in late Capricorn three times, setting another major cycle into motion, and at the end of 2020, conjunct Saturn at 1 Aquarius, initiating a new 20 year era in human history.
We now begin our review of the lessons Saturn has placed before us since January. It’s a time to be open to getting different takes on what we need to do, what we need to ignore, disciplines we need to accept, limitations we don’t need to accept, and how the duties or obligations we’ve taken on since the beginning of the year relate to our authentic Self and our Path of Hastened Attainment. Because it bridges the end of the first half of Capricorn and the first face of the second half of Capricorn, we’re going to get a review of what’s crystallized and needs to be re-shaped, and what needs to be crystallized in the future if we are to fulfill Dharma and not get trapped in needless chains.
While Saturn in Sag taught us to take a more mature view of our spiritual potentials, and examine which truths serve us in our spiritual quest to fulfill Dharma, as well as which lesser truths no longer suit our evolutionary necessity, Saturn in Capricorn is teaching us to “grow up and take responsibility” for our actions, feelings, and thoughts, and accept more important duties and roles in our world. Once a potential is fulfilled, then either we find a new potential in that same field of activity, or we find a new potential in another field of activity.
The Sabian Symbol for Saturn’s Stationary Retrograde Degree
The symbol for the 21st degree of Capricorn is “A relay race.” According to Rudhyar’s notes from the Marc Jones class originally published in The Astrology of Personality, this degree is one of "extreme of cooperation and give-and-take in life relationships,” “full surrender of self to service,” and “planned group behavior.”
In The Astrological Mandala he states this is a symbol of “the value of competition in developing group consciousness,” where cooperative striving between “group of individuals who take turns successively in order to maximize the group effort” may yield “outstanding results.” He offers that “the whole of civilization is a vast kind of relay race” which generates form of progress across generations.
He goes further to state this symbol “emphasizes the value of group cooperation and of necessary give-and-take,” where we must adjust our responses “to the challenges presented by competitors in dynamic interchange.” Rudhyar says it falls in the span of Dependence in the Process of Collectivization, Act of Capitalization and the Scene of Group Performance on Emotional-Cultural level.
Dr. Marc Edmund Jones, creator of the Sabian Symbols, says this is a degree of “an inevitable culmination for group opportunity,” where our skills and talents are “enhanced” by our “thoroughgoing cooperation with others in some vital phase of experience.” He states “human values are established as they become the coin of effective relationship” between people, and by dramatizing them we find the means to discover and refine our latent potentials.
He closes offering us that our importance to others is our “certainty of self-continuance.” He says the keyword is FITNESS, and when positive, this degree is “exceptional skill in bringing the elements of any given situation to a functional wholeness.”
What we are about to learn through review is directly related to the Sun conjunct Pluto on this degree in January 2019. That promised the entire year would reveal the light of Pluto’s seeds and/or purification process related to the theme of group performance, give and take in cooperative endeavors, and maybe some sort of “surrender to service” where we express our values in relationship and find our means of “self-continuance.”
So Saturn has hit a high water mark, and we enter a 4 month period of learning a lot about group activity, or planning for group activity, or mature interactions with others which offer us opportunities to cooperate with others to establish something of value. It could be useful to “get in shape” to participate in a group work in the future which will yield “a functional wholeness.” Perhaps the “looking back” of the retrograde will show us how previous group work has prepared us for current and future group work, or we’ll get a new look at how tending the seeds of past duties and responsibilities have led us to current and future group work.
Saturn's Dance with Uranus and Neptune While Retrograde in 2019
As Saturn is currently in its third biseptile with Uranus, sea changes in the destiny of people and nations are front and center! With the added sextile to Neptune, we’re all getting clear about what’s going on in collective consciousness, which will help us understand who we are to play and work with and in what way. The sextile to Neptune will help us demonstrate patience and maturity as we come to a new productive understanding of the collective consciousness and how we fit into it.
This biseptile is the first with both planets in Earth signs. Last year's first two involved Saturn in Capricorn but Uranus was still in late Aries, awakening us to our part in "The Cosmic Choir." That awakening and choice of how we are grounding and practicing that awakening in our lives has now brought us to a third stage of a broader fork in the road of our lives based in what areas these two spiritual heavyweights rule in our chart, where they’re transiting, and if we have any planets in any of the 7 “hot zones” created by this 7th harmonic evolutionary pulse. Right now the biseptile activates the following zones: 19-23 Capricorn, 10-14 Pisces, 1-5 Taurus, 23-27 Gemini, 15-19 Leo, 6-10 Libra, and 28 Scorpio-2 Sagittarius. If you have a planet of angle in one of these zones, your life is on the move, and the coming period will help you get a new depth understanding of the changes which began in Feb-March 2019 as a prelude to changes happening between now and December 2019.
In June and July, that phase relationship will pass and Saturn retrogrades to an extraordinarily tredecile with Uranus! This is an aspect of "serendipity," where we get to see how what we have learned is perfect for we you are, and how Life brought us the perfect people and conditions at the perfect time to help us bring forth one of our gifts, or bring forth someone else’s uniqueness or genius. These are the unique interactive conditions brought forth by the choices we made/make at the biseptiles. So take heart if some things make no sense in your life! Just choose wisely, grasshopper, and you could find yourself in the perfect place with great people who are part of your Spiritual Group.
Other Larger Cycles in Play
Since we're about to take a look back at all things Saturn as we've learned about its expression in Capricorn, remember we’re still working through the Mars/Saturn cycle which began with their conjunction at 9 Capricorn in early April 2018. That began a 2+ year cycle on attunement and finding techniques for “hearing” what our invisible helpers have to tell us.
Much that’s been building since then will “break the surface” when Mars is in Cancer and opposes Saturn in June 2019 from 19 Cancer to 19 Capricorn. That will bring “new blood” to our lives so accept the accelerated pace, which will relate to major new developments later this year and next. We’ll see the Light and get more understanding and appreciation as the inner planets make their oppositions to Saturn between mid-June and late July.
The current Mars/Saturn cycle lasts until their next conjunction on March 31, 2020 at 1 Aquarius, kicking off the 20 year period of the next "Grand Mutation" in Aquarius. Of some importance is that this is the last time Saturn will go stationary retrograde in Capricorn. Next year's April SRX degree will be 2 Aquarius, "the unexpected thunderstorm" which manifests as "cosmic visitations" which "galvanize us to action." I'll write more about that this time next year, but it's clear that 2020 will be a year of mobilization and no doubt "storms" both physical and psychic.
At this last retrograde station in Capricorn, Saturn is also exactly conjunct the South Node of the Moon. That puts the emphasis on "showing what we know," as well as "letting go, letting god" in responsible Capricorn ways. It indicates that we're now done with the period when Saturn last conjuncted the North Node, setting a long wave building/growth energy into motion which has dominated past years. Saturn conjuncted the North Node at 9 Scorpio in September 2013. That has been our "structured growth," "responsible building," or "pull into Dharma" since then.
We are now at the end of that growth period, and from this point Saturn gives us "structured release" or "demonstration of Dharma" as a guide during the next years' long phase of the long wave Saturn/Node cycle. This SRX degree symbol will therefore be one of the themes of how we demonstrate what we've built since September 2013. Adding another layer to what’s coming, Saturn retrograde conjuncts the South again at 18 Capricorn in early July, and again at 14 Capricorn in late September when Saturn goes stationary direct. Obviously Saturn’s two stationary points in 2019 are crucial to what’s going to unfold through Saturn’s next North Node conjunction at 27 Pisces in April 2025.
Because Saturn is retrograde, it’s a review, and may accompany returns of some sort. So whether we’re looking back at our long wave disciplines of Self-realization, or past duties, responsibilities, fears, or limitations, we’re ultimately being led to a different perspective about what’s enduring and important in our lives. Last year’s theme of overcoming fear and learning newer “harmless” ways of relating to others now puts us on the threshold of new group activities.
During the coming months, those with planets in the middle degrees of Earth and Water signs can make a lot of progress if they’ve made Saturn their friend. As Saturn in Capricorn will play a powerful role in all our lives, as well as world affairs, and continue its incredibly important dance with Uranus this year, if you don’t already have a copy, please consider getting your copy of Saturn: Spiritual Master, Spiritual Friend.
