A while back I was asked what lessons are to be learned when the North Node re-enters the sign it was in when we were born. Today we’ll take a brief look at this important event which happens several times in a normal life.
I last gave this to you almost 6 years ago. I’ve rewritten parts and added material to flesh out some concepts.
As I told him, a Nodal return happens every 18 years or so. It re-sets our “line of greatest development” and is a point in time when we begin to learn anew, since the natal North Node (NN) is our line of greatest development in this lifetime.
Here I’ll offer a brief reminder that while growth is good, it’s often difficult. The South Node is said to be our “line of least resistance,” or where we can “show what we know” or at least show how we’ve grown through the NN through what we demonstrate via the sign of our South Node. So a return of the Nodes isn’t necessarily a dramatic event, or even a notable time. It’s just a re-setting of our natural line of greatest development as indicated by our natal NN.
Transits indicate general circumstances as they proceed in the outer world. When the transiting North Node, indicating the general lines of development globally, returns to the same sign as our natal NN, then our growth is again in alignment with the generic tendencies of the “pull to growth” in the world. We can be clearer about how we’re learning over the course of our lifetime, while adjusting that line of growth to align with what is favorable in general.
The “return of the Nodes” happens about every 18 years. It’s a point when our line of greatest development gets re-set, along the same sign but renewed to where we are, and what we need to learn anew. So if we have a NN in Pisces and SN in Virgo, every 18 years we get a new Pisces “line of development” and Virgo “line of least resistance.”
We then go into 9 years of learning new things related to our natal NN from the time the transiting NN conjuncts our NN to the point when the transiting NN conjuncts our natal South Node (SN). After that, we demonstrate what we've learned those past 9 years until the next point in time when the transiting NN conjuncts our natal NN.
In other words, when the NN conjuncts our natal NN, we begin pure growth and via the SN, see what we no longer need or can take a new look at how to demonstrate our natural growth tendency. Then when the transiting NN conjuncts our SN, we grow through our SN and release through our NN. In other words, we grow in our ability to “show what we know,” or in some way grow through our “line of least resistance” while letting go of an old line of growth (SN conjunct natal NN).
If this sounds confusing, imagine that you are really good at “showing what you know.” Then you hit a point where you begin to grow in that area, even though you’re already good at it. At the same time, you realize you have to let go of an old line of growth, or find newer ways to demonstrate that line of development. That’s only one example of what I term “flipped nodes,” when the NN is conjunct your SN, and at the same time the SN is conjunct your NN. Again, this happens around 9, 27, 45, and 63.
So all those with a North Node in Leo had their line of greatest development “realigned” during the time after the transiting NN was in Leo between May 2017 and November 2018, and those with North Node in Cancer have been realigning their Nodal growth trajectory since the transiting NN entered Cancer in November 2018. This will last until early May 2020, when the transiting NN will enter Gemini and the SN enters Sagittarius.
An example from my own life: The last time the NN conjuncted my NN was January 2007. That was when I decided to leave Los Angeles and move to New Mexico, certainly a new line of development! I then pursued that path until it was exhausted, and just as the NN backed into my 4th house we began to pack up. We moved to Tucson just after the NN entered Scorpio in my 4th house.
The transiting NN moved into my 3rd in February 2014, which was when I rewrote my Mercury RX book and published the second edition. During 2014 and 2015 I began writing Saturn: Spiritual Master, Spiritual Friend during the time the NN was in my 3rd, and finished it around the time the transiting NN in Virgo conjuncted my natal SN. Since that event, I’ve truly moved into an entirely new way of “showing what I know” and growing through letting go.
If you want to know more about the Moon’s Nodes, I posted this 4 part series a little over 2 years ago. Taken together, these are a deep dive into what the Moon’s Nodes are, how they work, and the various ways to interpret both the natal Nodes and the transiting Nodes and their influence in our lives.
