In late 2020, Jupiter moved from Capricorn into Aquarius, kicking it off with the Grand Mutation conjunction with Saturn at 1 Aquarius. The new era promised by Jupiter in Aquarius made a brief appearance in early Pisces between May 2021 and late July after which it retrograded back into Aquarius between July and very late December 2021. It then returned to Pisces in direct motion, where it has raced through that sign en route to its entry into Aries in mid-May 2022. Everyone has had a Jupiter return in the past 12 years, and everyone will have another one at some point over the next 12 years.
In The Jupiter Return – New Truths, New Freedom, and A New Life Adventure I explained what may occur during the Jupiter return, and some of the things Jupiter brought me during my 2010 Jupiter return. I offered a bit about what Jupiter in each sign since then offered us, with the hope that if you have had a Jupiter return in the past few years, what I wrote may give you a fix on what renewed and when.
Because Jupiter is close to the Sun at this point in its orbit, it is said to be in “perihelion,” or the time in its orbit where it’s moving faster than at any other time. That’s why it’s racing forward, and will only spend a little over 4 months in Pisces before zooming into Aries, where it will stay until it briefly retrogrades back to 29 Pisces between very late October and the December Solstice. It then re-enters Aries, races forward through that sign, and eventually lands in Taurus by mid-May 2023.
Because I’m Leo rising and having a Jupiter return (if brief), I now begin a new cycle related to its rulership of my 5th and 8th houses. Because I have Jupiter in the 8th, while I am protected by my losses, it also means many of those losses were huge. While my “inner voice” has protected me many times, helping me leave “the scene of the crime” just before problems came down, I also have had terrible betrayals which forced me to forgive and walk on. While Jupiter opens doors as per its Sagittarius side, it also closes doors as per its Pisces side.
By examining the sign qualities of our natal Jupiter, we can know what to expect when our Jupiter return happens. On a related note, Jupiter’s expansive principle that opens wider doors during the times it conjuncts itself can also be applied to the planets in our chart. By noting when Jupiter conjuncted the various planets in our chart, we can see the varying cycles of expansion for each part of us that are happening at the same time.
Just remember that because its instinct is radical expansion, be careful not to be excessive in ways that bring unfortunate karmic returns resulting from too much risk taking, too few boundaries, and no sense of needing to regulate the process to ensure future benefits. While Jupiter opens the doors to greater adventures, if it cannot be sustained it will all be brought to a shambolic end.
Every part of us is at its own phase of expansive development. That’s what happens when Jupiter conjuncts any of our planets. Each part of us has its specific and unique 12 year cycle of growth, expansion, finding truth, and knowing when it’s time to end.
Jupiter Sign Changes Affect Multiple Life Areas
Because Jupiter rules both Sagittarius and Pisces, it has a primary influence on the houses where we have these signs, as well as any planets we may have in these signs. When transiting Jupiter changes signs, it changes the lessons and energy around those houses and planets. Based in our own natal positions, we also feel a shift in how we experience and express those signs and houses in our lives.
I gave you the example of people with Sun in Leo or Leo rising have Sagittarius on the 5th house and Pisces on the 8th. So people with either of these positions had an Aquarian experience of those parts of their lives in early and late 2021, and had a Piscean experience of those parts of their lives in the Summer of 2021 and the first four months of 2022. Those with Sun in Libra or Libra rising have Sagittarius on their 3rd and Pisces on their 6th houses. That means the focus moved from Aquarius to Pisces during those periods, and between May and October the focus will be more of an Aries nature. Those with Sun in Aquarius or Aquarius rising have Jupiter ruling their 11th and 2nd houses. Aquarians are experiencing a Pisces quality to these house affairs which will morph into more of an Aries influence in late Spring through the Summer and several weeks at the beginning of Autumn. You can apply this model of analysis to all the signs.
At this point, take a look at the dates of Jupiter's occupation of the signs. If you were born during one of these periods, you had a Jupiter return at each subsequent period.
It should be easy to see how these times marked major shifts in your life direction. It could have affected anything symbolized by Jupiter, such as your view of your future, the lodestar of your life, or where you knew you had to seek a greater set of opportunities and a more free existence. You would have learned and responded according to your Jupiter sign, in the life area (house) occupied by your natal Jupiter.
As an aside, these approximate 12 year cycles can be seen in terms of 4 quarters, or "seasons." The 3 years after a Jupiter return begins the pattern that emerges from 3-6 years after the conjunction. 6-9 years after the conjunction the wave culminates in a public way, and the last 3 years of the cycle are the harvest, breakdown of the old forms, and closures/rewards that prepare us for a new Jupiter cycle.
I discuss this “whole cycle” in detail in my book Saturn: Spiritual Master, Spiritual Friend, Those of you who already have the book can find more about these “stations” at the conjunction, squares, and opposition in Chapters 6 and 7. All you have to do is substitute Jupiter’s qualities for the Saturn qualities described in those chapters to see how the Jupiter cycles have played out in your lives.
100 Years of Jupiter in the Different Signs – When Did Your Return(s) Happen?
The following time periods are somewhat approximate. I chose to begin with the late 1920s since most who were born before that are very old or dead. I close each sign with the next time Jupiter is in their sign.
