In a discussion about my article Pluto Transits –Radical, Purifying, Intense, and Nothing Personal a friend noted Pluto is now opposing her Pluto in early Leo while squaring planets in early Scorpio. I told her that “may require you to enjoy yourself and be very pleasant while cruising through the wreckage all around you.” Due to Pluto’s speed, we’re in a strange part of its orbit where it can actually make an opposition to three generations of Pluto positions. Today we look at why some generations don’t even get a square while others get an opposition.
Due to the speed at which Pluto moves through different signs, the Pluto of different generations seldom makes an opposition to its natal position. I’ll explain that downstream a ways. For now, I’ve noted that many with Pluto in Cancer have been checking out in the time Pluto was in Capricorn, and many with Pluto in early Leo are stressed, as will be all with Pluto in the first half of Leo over the next dozen years.
In the larger historical sweep, the Pluto in late Cancer and Leo generations are the first generations to get an opposition in our lives, due to the speed of Pluto between Leo and Scorpio. Pluto was able to transit from mid-Cancer to early Sagittarius between 1926 and 1999, meaning it traveled 6 signs in a little over 70 years.
However, due to Pluto slowing down, those with Pluto in Libra will never experience an opposition unless they live to be around 100 because Pluto won’t get to Aries again until 2068, and Pluto in Scorpio will be long gone by the time Pluto gets to Taurus in 2097. That’s what makes this period so different. We have been and continue to be in the thick of Pluto opposing the natal Plutos of everyone over 55!
That means an entire group of elders now over 55 now have the polarized power of Plutonic awareness of itself. And to note, this is VERY beneficial if people with Pluto in early Leo have any planet at all in early Aries, Gemini, Libra, and Sagittarius! An opposition is the best aspect possible, since it brings awareness as the original seed form breaks the surface of our most effective spiritual power. This now gives those affected a profound ability to externalize the power of their deepest transformational core.
How Long Did It Take Previous Generations To Have Transiting Pluto Opposed Their Natal Pluto?
Those who were born in 1910 had Pluto between 25-28 Gemini. Pluto transited that sector of Sagittarius in 2006, so very few of that group experienced the opposition. Those born in 1920 had Pluto between 6-9 Cancer. Pluto transited that sector of Capricorn in 2011 so those who lived to their 90s saw the opposition. Those born 1930 had Pluto between 18-21 Cancer. Pluto transited 18-21 Capricorn in 2017, so the opposition happened in their upper 80s.
The youngest groups seeing the opposition are those born in the 40s and 50s. People born in 1940 who had Pluto between 1-5 Leo. Pluto is opposes that zone 2023-2025. Those born 1950 had Pluto between 16-20 Leo. Pluto opposes that zone in 2034, showing these groups have their oppositions in their mid-80s.
Those born in 1960 had Pluto between 4-9 Virgo. Pluto transits 4-7 Pisces in 2047, showing the opposition will grow back toward the late 80s after that. Those born 1970 have Pluto between 25-30 Virgo. Pluto will oppose that span 2064-2067, showing that group will be in their mid-90s to experience the opposition. Again, all of this is entirely due to the speed at which Pluto moves through various signs.
Rather than invent the wheel, I’ll reprint a part of an article I gave you in January called Neptune and Pluto Generations Have Spiritual Lessons Which Happen At Different Speeds. I also went into Neptune, Uranus, and Saturn orbits in that article, so please take a look at the whole thing when you’re done here. For now, here’s a piece of it specifically focused on Pluto’s speed through various signs.
Because of the shape of Pluto’s orbit, it moves at a very high speed when moving through Scorpio, but moves very slowly when transiting Taurus. Since each sign represents a specific quality of experience, the more signs Pluto transits in our lives, the more varied types of Plutonic experiences we will have. This provides us a variety of “underworld” experiences, and different ways to purify ourselves as it moves forward through our houses from where it was at birth.
Pluto in the Signs 1800-2200
To illustrate, someone born in 1824 had Pluto in early Aries. Pluto entered Taurus in 1853, and finally entered Gemini in 1884. It entered Cancer 1914, Leo in 1938, Virgo in 1956, Libra in 1971, Scorpio in 1983, Sagittarius in 1995, and Capricorn in 2008.
It occupies early Aquarius in 2024, and enters Pisces in 2044, and Aries in 2068. It will transit Taurus again beginning 2097, Gemini in 2128, and Cancer 2158, followed by Leo in 2183.
So those born in the 1820s had only experienced Pluto’s transit of Aries and Taurus by the time they turned 60. Those born in the early 1880s had Pluto in late Taurus, but by the time they turned 60 they had experienced Pluto in Gemini, Cancer, and Leo.
Those born in the 1940s experienced Pluto in Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, and Sagittarius by age 60. Those born in 2010 will experience Pluto in Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, and early Aries by age 60. And those born in 2050 will know only Pluto in Pisces, Aries, and Taurus by age 60.
As you can see, people born 200 years ago only experienced Pluto transiting 2 signs, but the generation born in Dane Rudhyar and Marc Jones’ time (1888-95) got Pluto in Gemini, Cancer, Leo, and Virgo before the age of 70. Quite a difference to experience Pluto’s radical transformational energies in four signs instead of two!
I was born with Pluto at 18 Leo, and now that it’s at 2 Aquarius, I’m at the waxing pentelftile in its larger cycle, showing I’m at a Plutonic phase of having to find a specialized form of faith to overcome a duality in the Plutonic landscape unknown to us for hundreds of years. But for those born 1937-1940 when Pluto was at the end of Cancer and beginning of Leo, it’s opposition time in 2023-2025! Those born 1941-44 with Pluto 3-11 Leo will have their opposition between 2025 and 2030, so we have a lot of people who will be experiencing the opposition for years to come!
Some Generations Don't Even Get Pluto Square Pluto
As I hinted at earlier, some generations never know a Pluto trine, or even a square, due to the lengths of time it spends in various signs. Those born in 1849 had Pluto in late Aries, and by 1899 it was only in mid-Gemini, a span of about 45 degrees. So millions of people in those groups never even knew a sextile, much less a square or trine. That will also be the case for those born in the 2060s, 2070s, and 2080s.
By contrast, it was perihelion (fastest speed) in Scorpio, so those generations born with Pluto in Leo, Virgo, and Libra have experienced Pluto moving very quickly through the houses where we have those signs, as well as Scorpio and Sagittarius. My first square occurred in 1990 when I was 39, and the trine happened when I was 51-53. It quincunxed my natal Pluto when I was 55-57, and will make an opposition to my natal Pluto in 2035 when I’m 84! So I get a Pluto opposition AND a Uranus return if I live to that age.
The generation born in 2005 with Pluto around 23-25 Sagittarius will have transiting Pluto square their natal Pluto around 2060-2062 when they’re 55-57, and the ones born 2019-2020 with Pluto near 24 Capricorn will have the first Pluto square in 2089 when they're 70. Those born in 2005 won’t see a trine until they are 83-85 and those born in 2020 will never know a trine. And neither group will experience an opposition.
So it seems clear that different generations have different transpersonal transformative lessons and rates of unfoldment of those collective lessons. As Pluto represents the forces of “break down, break through, and break free” it seems that different Soul groups come in with their own Plutonic responses, but also get a wider or narrower experience of those transpersonal lessons.
To bring it full circle, yes, planets we’ve had in the late degrees of Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn have been put under pressure by Pluto the past couple of years, as well as planets we’ve had in the early degrees of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius. But as the article in the first paragraph makes clear, we can use Pluto transits and hard aspects to transform whatever we need to so that we become purified agents of Soul/Spirit fulfilling our destiny.
