All the planets rule certain signs. When planet transits a sign ruled by another planet, that second planet becomes the first planet’s “dispositor,” or “ruler behind the scenes.” Dispositors influence how a planet manifests in real time. Some shift frequently, some take years.
That means, for example, that while Jupiter is in Gemini, it has Mercury as a dispositor. So when Mercury was in Libra, Jupiter expressed Gemini with a Libra backdrop. When Mercury was in Scorpio, Jupiter expressed Gemini with a Scorpio backdrop. And now that Mercury is in Sagittarius for a while, Jupiter is expressing its Gemini energies with a Sagittarius backdrop.
And in each of these transits, Mercury had its dispositor; in Libra, Venus was the dispositor; in Scorpio, Mars was its dispositor; in Sagittarius, it is its own dispositor. To take it further, Venus was in Her sign while Mercury was in Libra and Mars was in its sign when Mercury was in Scorpio. As you can see, this sets up three possible dispositor relationships.
The three possible dispositor conditions are: Final Dispositor, Mutual Reception, and Chain of Dispositors. A “Final Dispositor” is a planet in one of the signs it rules. A “Mutual Reception” is when two planets are in signs each other rules, which is a very intense self-contained, self-reinforcing energy field. A “Chain of Dispositors” is created when Planet A is ruled by Planet B which is ruled by Planet C which is ruled by Planet D which is ruled by Planet A.
These can be as short as three planets and as long as five or six, depending on what signs are occupied. These are chains where there is no Final Dispositor. If a sequence of dispositors ends in a Final Dispositor it is not a Chain of Dispositors. A Chain of Dispositors links back upon itself when a Planet is disposited by a previous planet in the chain.
A chain of dispositors spreads out the influence behind the scenes and is far more interlocking in terms of the planetary influences than when there's a Final Dispositor or a Mutual Reception. The latter two end the sequence in their own power positions, either as solitary officiator or a shared backdrop. And yes, planets in Mutual Reception could become the final dispositors of all the other planets.Using a stage metaphor, think of a final dispositor as a single light source for the entire set; a mutual reception is a doubled light source which influences all the other lights on stage; and a chain of dispositors is one of overlapping influences so that no one influence controls the backdrop and how the stage is lit. It’s like the lights are on one part of the stage, and then switch off while another part is illuminated, then they’re off while yet another part of the stage is lit another way which is related but different.
So What’s Happening Now?
The Moon is ruled by every other planet for about 25 days each month. Look to the Moon’s dispositor to understand the backdrop of those 2 day periods.
The Sun
While the Sun is in Scorpio, Mars is its ruler. For the first 11 days in Scorpio, Mars was in Cancer, making that the Solar backdrop. Mars in Cancer is ruled by the Moon, so any sign could be next in line.
When Mars enters Leo, then the Sun in Scorpio will be in a Mutual Reception with Mars in Leo. When the Sun enters Sagittarius, it will have Jupiter in Gemini as its dispositor, which we discussed earlier, makes Mercury its dispositor. Mercury will be in Sagittarius the entire time the Sun is in Sagittarius, so Mercury will be in a Mutual Reception with Jupiter. This is a very powerful self-reinforcing energy, so open to new views, higher truths, broader awareness, and a long term view with an eye to getting the information needed to accomplish the vision beginning in 2025.
The Sun in Capricorn and Aquarius will have Saturn in Pisces as its dispositor. Saturn is disposited by Jupiter in Gemini which is disposited by Mercury in Sagittarius through the second week of January, and then transits Capricorn where it will be ruled by Saturn, creating a Chain of Dispositors during Mercury’s time in Capricorn and Aquarius.
Mercury
We’ve discussed Mercury above. Anything transiting Sagittarius has Jupiter as its dispositor, leaving Mercury in a power position. Anything transiting Capricorn and Aquarius has Saturn as its dispositor, putting Jupiter and Mercury in the power positions.
Venus
Venus is in Sagittarius through November 11, so She is ruled by Jupiter. Venus enters Capricorn then, where she is ruled by Saturn through early January when She enters Her exaltation sign of Pisces, where She will again have Jupiter in Gemini as a dispositor. As Mercury is ruled by Jupiter and then Saturn and then Jupiter between January and early March, that will be a time of Mutual Receptions and Chains of Dispositors all involving Jupiter and Saturn.
Mars
Mars will be in Leo for November and December, making the Sun its dispositor. As discussed earlier, Sun in Scorpio creates a Mutual Reception, while Sun in Sagittarius is ruled by the Mercury/Jupiter Mutual Reception. When Mars retrogrades back into Cancer in January, and stays in that sign through most of April, the Moon will be its dispositor, so any combination of dispositors could occur.
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto
We’ve discussed Jupiter and Saturn. Their dispositors won’t change until Jupiter changes signs followed by Saturn changing signs. I’ll write about that next Summer.
Uranus in Taurus is disposited by Venus. We discussed Venus’ sign changes above. Neptune is in Pisces, a sign it rules, so has been a standalone “Final Dispositor” of itself for many years. Pluto in Capricorn and Aquarius is ruled by Saturn, so Jupiter will influence the backdrop of how Pluto expresses itself until Saturn enters Aries, which will introduce an entirely new energy to how Pluto has expressed its Aquarian seeds before now.
By looking at how “chains of dispositors,” “final dispositors,” and “mutual reception” are in play between the planets, we get a clear picture of the backdrop for how each planet operates.
