At 2:30 am PST on January 8, Mercury leaves Sagittarius and enters the practical sign of Capricorn. Having done our review of the themes of 2024, we now begin to move into the themes of 2025 which promise a renewal of love. Mercury in Capricorn now brings Cardinal Earth to the forefront of any planets or houses we have with Gemini or Virgo prominent.
Mercury’s entry into Capricorn means it’s no longer in a mutual reception with Jupiter in Gemini, and is now ruled by Saturn in Pisces, showing Mercury will be more intuitive, more empathic, and more “in tune with the collective” for the next few weeks. While in the first decan of Capricorn the second week of January, besides the primary Saturn influence, it also has a Jupiter sub-influence.
The third week of January it’s in the second decan, which has a Venus primary influence and a Mars sub-influence. The fourth week of the month it’s in the third decan with a Mercury influence and a Sun sub-influence. So while it will be ruled by Saturn through mid-February, this month it shifts from a Pisces sub-influence the second week to a Capricorn sub-influence the third week, and then an Aquarian sub-influence the fourth week.
Mercury in Capricorn organizes the scattered ideas and plans of Mercury in Sagittarius into a grounded power of action. We have now opened new perspectives, adventures, truths, and visions which require some discipline, training, and/or organization. Mercury in Capricorn gives a practical view of how to organize or reorganize an effort or project, and is “the patient mind” which methodically organizes perceptions and ideas into coherent useful understanding.
The themes of the December Mercury retrograde in Sagittarius are still in play until the next SRX in March. That recent retrograde helped us take a new look at “the new world we entered” in 2024, and how giving up the lesser created space for a greater life we’re living now. We got a different perspective on our spiritual work, and began anew on a platform of “intensified love” or a passion for a new vision or future.
Since the Inferior conjunction at 15 Sagittarius, Mercury has again been the planet which “leads the Light.” It now speeds up in anticipation of their coming Superior conjunction at 21 Aquarius on February 9, after which Pluto will again be the planet which leads the Sun. While Mercury is in Capricorn, it will “bring the news” or a better understanding of what we experienced when Venus was in Capricorn in November and early December, and during the time the Sun has been in Capricorn since the Solstice.
While in Capricorn, Mercury is in its own 8th house relative to its Gemini qualities, and in its own 5th house relative to its Virgo qualities. So it’s very regenerative and aware of shared social values and resources, as well as more creative-expressive in Capricorn. I explain more about how Mercury functions in various signs in my pioneering work A New Look at Mercury Retrograde. Since it’s been retrograde in Aries and Sagittarius, as well as Virgo/Leo last year, and will shift pattern into retrogrades involving Aries/Pisces, Leo, and Sagittarius/Scorpio this year, if you want to know about Mercury retrograde in any sign or house and how it functions in worldly events, please get a copy. It’s both fun and informative, and will give you “a new look” at all things related to Mercury retrograde! (Just make sure you get the 2nd Edition with the award on the cover published by 5th Ray Publishing rather than the much older 1st Edition published by Weiser.)
So this is the time to mobilize! Mercury’s speeding up and will make some great aspects to Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune during its run in Capricorn. Just slow down a little when Mercury opposes Mars January 22-24, and use the favorable trine to Uranus and sextile to Neptune to see the future and respond in a practical but inspired way!
