At 6:53 pm PST on January 27, Mercury leaves Capricorn and enters idealistic Aquarius, where it will occupy the exact degree of the Grand Mutation of December 2020 through 10:40 am PST January 28. Mercury’s transit of this crucial degree gives us yet another sign, signal, or understanding about the 20 year era set into motion then.
This is the last inner planet entry into Aquarius this year, following Venus in December and the Sun just entering. Mercury in Aquarius brings Fixed Air to the forefront of any planets or houses we have with Gemini or Virgo prominent. As Mercury is said to be “exalted” in Aquarius, it’s now in its “grounds of greatest development,” so open to seeing the bigger picture and how all the parts fit into a larger whole.
Mercury continues to accelerate toward maximum speed between now and its Superior Conjunction with the Sun at 21 Aquarius on February 9. Because of Mercury’s fast pace, now is a very good time to move forward with projects, as the “coordinating principle” is now very fast with the ability to find information a lot quicker than when retrograde.
Mercury in Aquarius takes the organized action of Capricorn into a vision of the greatest good for the greatest number. This gives an ability to synthesize the parts into a whole, or see how each “member of the jazz band” contributes their unique part at just the right time. Mercury in Aquarius gives an idealistic view of how to communicate a group vision in ways that all pull together to bring the future ideal into reality.
The themes of the December Mercury retrograde in Sagittarius are still in play until the next SRX in March. That recent retrograde helped us take a new look at “the new world we entered” in 2024, and how giving up the lesser created space for a greater life we’re living now. We got a different perspective on our spiritual work, and began anew on a platform of “intensified love” or a passion for a new vision or future.
Mercury continues to be ruled by Saturn in Pisces, showing Mercury will has been and continues to be more intuitive, more empathic, and more “in tune with the collective” even as the lessons involve revising some ideas “back to source,” or perhaps seeing that it’s time to put oneself into the public eye for attracting those who are part of the spiritual work. This is leading us to “take a walk with our wisdom” in the second week of February.
Since the Inferior conjunction at 15 Sagittarius, Mercury has been the planet which “leads the Light” except for the period between Sun conjunct Pluto on January 21 and Mercury’s coming conjunction with Pluto on January 28/29, when Pluto has been the “entry to the Light.” Mercury will again return to its position as gateway to the Light after January 28 until the next Superior conjunction of Mercury with the Sun in mid-February, after which Pluto will again be the gateway to the Light until the Sun conjuncts Saturn. After that we have rapidly changing positions which I’ll write about in March.
While in Aquarius, Mercury is in its own 9th house relative to its Gemini qualities, and in its own 6th house relative to its Virgo qualities. So it’s very future-oriented and visionary, as well as willing to adjust and/or serve as needed. I explain more about how Mercury functions in various signs in my pioneering work A New Look at Mercury Retrograde.
Since it’s been retrograde in Aries and Sagittarius, as well as Virgo/Leo last year, and will shift pattern into retrogrades involving Aries/Pisces, Leo, and Sagittarius/Scorpio this year, if you want to know about Mercury retrograde in any sign or house and how it functions in worldly events, please get a copy. It’s both fun and informative, and will give you “a new look” at all things related to Mercury retrograde! (Just make sure you get the 2nd Edition with the award on the cover published by 5th Ray Publishing rather than the much older 1st Edition published by Weiser.)
Mercury in Aquarius takes the personal understanding of how to apply power in Capricorn into a wider dimension of understanding in Aquarius. It sees how the parts related to the whole, and works within a bigger vision than in any other sign. When in doubt, stop worrying and see how everything fits together in a bigger picture.
From here it’s onward to the Superior conjunction at 21 Aquarius! As a result of the Inferior conjunction at 15 Sagittarius, we’re seeing ways to anticipate and prepare for the future given the omens we’re seeing in the present. See the larger patterns and cycles in motion, and focus on life purposes. We now move forward into a greater vision as we prepare for a more empathic and intuitive way of coordinating affairs when Mercury goes into Pisces on February 14. Again, because of Mercury’s SD degree still in play, stay focused into moving forward into a greater life and love promised by that degree.
So this is the time to mobilize! Mercury’s moving quickly and will make a favorable trine to Jupiter in early February, and continue to make favorable aspects through February 12. Except for the quincunx to Mars on February 7, when adjustments must be made, all in all this should be a quick and serendipitous trip through the idealistic sign of Aquarius.
