Today we finish our December Capricorn musical birthdays. December 29 was the birthday of one of the most distinctly beautiful voices of the British Invasion!
Marianne Faithfull (29 December 1946 - 30 January 2025) was an English singer, songwriter and actress discovered by Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham. She went straight to the top with her remarkable voice coupled with her relationship with Mick Jagger, and straight down due to the excesses of a rock and roll lifestyle hanging with the Stones. A while ago she made a comeback, and is still loved and respected for her talents. She's been in movies, and still performs these days (written 18 days before she died). Today we'll revisit some from her early career. For your enjoyment, a few from the ever-beautiful Marianne Faithful!
Her first hit! Here’s a live 1964 performance of “As Tears Go By” (She’s 17 in this video! And I know it says 1965, but this is the 1964 appearance.)
From her 1965 appearance on Hullaballoo, introduced by Brian Epstein, “As Tears Go By”
Her self titled first album from 1965 has disappeared, but this surfaced with 16 songs including a bunch of the songs from that album. Marianne Faithfull’s Greatest Hits
Her second big hit, “Come and Stay With Me.” Live on French tv in 1966, here’s another live performance of “Come and Stay With Me.”
From the 1968 Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus, her performance of “Something Better”
She co-wrote this one with Mick and Keef, “Sister Morphine”
She appeared with David Bowie in 1973 to do a duet of “I Got You Babe”
We’ll close this brief tribute with five of her albums! First, her 1979 comeback album, Broken English
Dangerous Acquaintances (1981)
A Child’s Adventure (1983)
Strange Weather (1987)
Here's a collection of 16 hits from the 60s which look different than the one above with the same name. Marianne Faithfull’s Greatest Hits
For our encore, a live performance of the John Lennon classic, “Working Class Hero”
